    This article is oriented within the broader field of emotions and ethics, and focuses on the function of emotions in Paulineethics with respect to rhetoric. The Aristotelian theory of rhetoric, which differentiates between public speech and pathē onthe one hand and ethos on the other, forms the starting point (Arist. Rhet. II). With Paul’s public proclamation of the gospel,he builds up mission churches and does not simply abandon the role of the orator in his letters. He makes use of the emotiveeffect of public speaking both to demonstrate his own credibility and to convince his listeners. He combines both dimensionsby simultaneously presenting himself as a role model for the communities. Furthermore, Paul develops an agapē ethics forthe communities he addresses, which is based on Lev 19:18 and the early Jewish and early Christian reception of the commandment to love one's neighbor. In this concept of communitarian agapē ethics he combines emotional elements and elements of virtue.

    Antique scriptures are supposed to contradict modern autonomy, but they are also used as a source for ethics. Is this a contradiction? I suggest to understand any scripture as an indirect source that becomes meaningful in the light of other resources of morality, only. The article proposes to understand the bible as one of the empirical proxies of such a resource - the belief in the absent God. First, I conceptualize ethics as an investigation of world-view that leads us to act. In relation to biblical texts we have to ask how moral options come alive. Ethics cannot use scriptures to give reasons for our action, but it will investigate how convictions about the truth determine the direction of moral thought. Provided that moral issues follow our world-view, the key point for theological ethics is the reconstruction of an image of God. While God the Almighty will endanger our autonomy, the man on the cross will not do so. Hence, biblical ethics need to share the antique testimony of the presence of God with the modern idea of his absence as a source for morality.

    Computational methods offer a valuable potential for new approaches to New Testament and early Christian ethics. They can contribute to studies in the reception of ancient ethical con­cepts as well as comparative research on the use of any given term or concept in antiquity. This paper explores the potential of blended reading approaches, which combine computa­tional methods with the established approaches of philological interpretation of individual texts. The article briefly presents and discusses corpus-analytical procedures, such as cooccurrence analysis, the potentials of working with Biblindex as well as of procedures of automatic citation recognition and the manifold possibilities of working with annotated data­bases

    References to the authority of the Church Fathers played an important role in the formation of the own identity in Protestantism during the Reformation and the Confessional Age. The article points to the possibilities offered by funerary writings in a reception-historical perspective, as well as the potential of digital methods for this research context. In funerary writings, a whole range of passages from the Church Fathers were appropriated and used for their own normative conveying intentions. In addition to the content-related perspective, the article pleads for an interdisciplinary cooperation between patristics, early modern church history and the digital humanities.

    The article addresses a methodological question: how to read ancient philosophical texts in such a way that they remain visibleboth as relevant cultural background of Christianity's formative phase and as a valuable voice in societal debates today?It argues that an approach inspired by the vocabulary of religious studies can help us to realise that double tenet. The articleexplores inter alia the analytical usefulness of Ninian Smart's differentiation of six dimensions of religions / worldviews andthe application of the concept of lived religion to ancient philosophical currents and texts, with ancient Stoicism and the Epicureanthesis that one should not fear death serving as case studies.
