    Within the last two decades streaming services and digital platforms have come to dominate the distribution of recorded music. What has this transformation meant for the music industry in Norway? From Spinning to Streaming: Norwegian Music Reaching the World presents research on how artists, musicians, composers and other intermediaries within Norway’s music industry are meeting this digital reality.Digitalization has led to new possibilities for producing and distributing music, as well as for exporting music and succeeding on an international level. Yet the route out into the world via the internet can be both steep and unpredictable. By investigating ways of working, types of expertise required, as well as economic and copyright circumstances, the authors demonstrate how digital media are both important tools for creating musical works and a key engine of development in the music industry itself.The authors rely on various theoretical concepts and analytical perspectives to explore the interplay between technological, professional, social and cultural conditions in the music industry’s development. A central finding in the book is the need among several actors in the Norwegian music industry for increased specialized competence and understanding regarding rights issues.     While numerous studies have analyzed the aggregate employment effects of digital technologies, this paper focuses on the employment development of individual workers exposed to digitalization. We use a unique linked employer-employee data set for Germany and a direct measure of the first-time introduction of cutting-edge digitalization technologies in establishments between 2011 and 2016. Applying a matching approach, we compare workers in establishments investing in digital technologies with similar employees in establishments that do not make such an investment. We find that the employment stability of incumbent workers is lower in investing than non-investing establishments, but most displaced workers easily find jobs in other firms, and differences in days in unemployment are small. We also document substantial heterogeneities in the employment effects across skill groups, occupational tasks performed, and gender. Employment reactions to digitalization are most pronounced for both low- and high-skilled workers, for workers with non-routine tasks, and for female workers. Our results underline the importance of tackling the impending digital divide among different groups of workers.

    In this paper, we utilize ESCAP (2020)'s framework of Digital and Sustainable Regional Integration Index version 1 (DigiSRII 1.0) to uncover digital economy integration trends across Asia-Pacific region. The results show that Asia and the Pacific has progressed well on conventional digital economy integration, especially due to significant improvements on digital-economy infrastructure and ICT goods trade liberalization. However, workforce capacitation and infrastructures investments are essential to bridge digitalization gaps between digitalized economies in the region. Moreover, the fairly low regulatory similarity between regional economies further highlights the importance of regional regulatory harmonization in order to foster regional trade in digitally-enabled goods and services. From a sustainable development perspective, inclusivity and equity of access to digitalization and required infrastructure remain key challenges. It is found that while internet penetration in the region has been getting higher, female participation in digital economy is relatively low in general and extremely low in low-income economies. In addition, there is room to enhance cybersecurity in most of Asia-Pacific economies. Regional digital policies should focus on harmonizing data protection protocols and building a safer network of servers that can promote economic activity and sensitive matters to be conducted online. Fostering a more inclusive digital transformation may considerably boost network-effects and accelerate the transition to a competitive and sustainable regional digital economy.

    Since the first quarter of 2020, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in developing countries have faced significant hardship due to the economic shocks related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Questions arise, however, regarding the extent to which MSMEs' hardship has varied between sectors and between countries over time, whether it is gender neutral, whether the digitalization of MSMEs could alleviate it, and whether government support has reached MSMEs. This paper aimed to answer these questions using new survey data from eight developing Asian countries around the middle and toward the end of 2020. We found a wide variation in the severity of and responses to the pandemic impacts on MSMEs between sectors and between countries. Turning to common trends, our significant findings were as follows. First, MSMEs' sales and non-permanent employment tended to recover toward late 2020. Second, despite the general trend, the pandemic shocks concentrated on hard-hit industries, such as food processing, textiles, tourism, food and drink services, and education, which even deteriorated in the second half of 2020. Third, women-led enterprises remained vulnerable, exhibiting bleak prospects for sales or more job cuts than men-led but otherwise similar enterprises. Fourth, the digitalization intensity had a nonlinear relationship with MSMEs' sales and employment, suggesting that online sales beyond a certain threshold, around 40% of the total sales, could generate more revenues and jobs for MSMEs. Last, the number of MSMEs receiving support from their governments increased in the second half of 2020. Still, such support did not effectively reach the most affected or vulnerable MSMEs.
