    We present a quantitative study of textually encoded emotions in a core set of the Grimms’ Children’s and Household Tales. As a contribution to Computational Literary Studies, we publish (a) a fairy tale corpus (ChildTale-A) with more than 5,000 manually annotated sentences and introduce (b) four aggregated measures for the analysis of textually encoded emotions (Average Valence, Emotional Potential, Emotional Arc, and Emotion Profile), with which we (c) analyze the corpus with regard to the purported cruelty vs. optimism of fairy tales. On average, the fairy tales contain more than 50 % emotional sentences without clear negative sentiment, while emotion trajectory patterns vary. Together, these findings underscore the role of emotions as plot-driving elements in fairy tales as a highly schematized historical genre.

    This book presents a complete method for the identification of metaphor in language at the level of word use. It is based on extensive methodological and empirical corpus-linguistic research in two languages, English and Dutch. The method is formulated as an explicit manual of instructions covering one chapter, the method being a development and refinement of the popular MIP procedure presented by the Pragglejaz Group in 2007. The extended version is called MIPVU, as it was developed at VU University Amsterdam. Its application is demonstrated in five case studies addressing metaphor in English news texts, conversations, fiction, and academic texts, and Dutch news texts and conversations. Two methodological chapters follow reporting a series of successful reliability tests and a series of post hoc troubleshooting exercises. The final chapter presents a first empirical analysis of the findings, and shows what this type of methodological attention can mean for research and theory.

    Digitale repräsentative Korpora werden vorgestellt als eine Variable im Dreieck von Fragestellung, Methodik und Gegenstandsbereich und damit eine der Möglichkeiten, neue Erkenntnisse über Literatur zu gewinnen. Doch ein Fach oder eine Teildisziplin ,Korpusliteraturwissenschaft' gibt es (noch) nicht, nicht so jedenfalls, wie es Korpuslinguistik als einen Bereich der Sprachwissenschaft gibt, der in systematisierender wie historischer Absicht natürlichsprachliche Äußerungen sammelt. Auch spricht man in der Literaturwissenschaft und selbst in der Literaturgeschichte nur selten von einem Quellenkorpus, wie das in historischen Fächern üblich ist, wenn unter Quellen die je nach Fragestellung systematische Zusammenstellung möglichst breit angelegter Sammlungen von Zeugnissen verstanden wird. Außerdem fehlt in der Literaturwissenschaft weitgehend die Verbindung von qualitativen und quantitativen Methoden der Textanalyse, wie sie in der Linguistik zu finden ist. Das Fehlen einer Korpusliteraturwissenschaft kann auf drei Entwicklungen in der Literaturwissenschaft zurückgeführt werden. Erstens ist die Literaturwissenschaft stark am Kanon der besonderen Werke ausgerichtet, was auch literaturwissenschaftliche Editionen betrifft. Hinzu kommt zweitens der Bedeutungsverlust der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung seit den 1990er Jahren, als mit dem Ende der Sozialgeschichte als leitendes Forschungsparadigma eine integrierende Fragestellung für die Literaturgeschichte an Geltung verloren hat. Schließlich ist drittens die Literaturwissenschaft fachsystematisch weit von der Linguistik weggerückt. Deren empirische Ansätze qualitativen wie quantitativen Typs spielen in der Literaturwissenschaft kaum eine Rolle. Nicht zuletzt hat der bestimmende antiszientifische Impuls die Literaturwissenschaft weit von der stärker methodenorientierten Linguistik entfernt.     Die vorliegende Arbeit erforscht mögliche Bedingungen des Zustandekommens eines Anschaulichkeitspotenzials deutschsprachiger Erzähltexte des Zeitraums 1880-1926. Das Vorgehen ist das einer quantitativen Analyse metaphorischen Sprachgebrauchs, wobei ich eine Synthese von Kognitiver Linguistik, formalisierter Korpuslinguistik, gebrauchsbasierter Textlinguistik und traditioneller Rhetorik erprobe. Metaphorische Sprache, und zwar insbesondere konventionalisierte Metaphorik, wird dabei in Form der Hauptwortarten lexiko-grammatikalisch differenziert, um ausgehend von den typischen Diskursfunktionen der Wortarten (v. a. Referenzialierung von Objekten, Zuständen, Prozessen, Eigenschaften, und Relationen) Muster bezüglich eines Anschaulichkeitspotenzials zu erforschen. Das untersuchte Korpus wurde aus dem digitalen Referenzkorpus Deutsches Textarchiv extrahiert und besteht aus den Eingangspassagen 35 literarischer Werke. Der Texteingang wird als Schlüsselstelle der Kommunikation zwischen Text und Leser gewählt, die besondere Anforderungen an die Gestaltung des Diskurses stellt, indem sie repräsentative, aber auch persuasive Funktionen hat.

    Prominent among the social developments that the web 2.0 has facilitated is digital social reading (DSR): on many platforms there are functionalities for creating book reviews, ‘inline’ commenting on book texts, online story writing (often in the form of fanfiction), informal book discussions, book vlogs, and more. In this article, we argue that DSR offers unique possibilities for research into literature, reading, the impact of reading and literary communication. We also claim that in this context computational tools are especially relevant, making DSR a field particularly suitable for the application of Digital Humanities methods. We draw up an initial categorization of research aspects of DSR and briefly examine literature for each category. We distinguish between studies on DSR that use it as a lens to study wider processes of literary exchange as opposed to studies for which the DSR culture is a phenomenon interesting in its own right. Via seven examples of DSR research, we discuss the chosen approaches and their connection to research questions in literary studies.

Osnabrücker Beiträge zur Sprachtheorie . 2018;(92):127-156. ; Digitale repräsentative Korpora werden vorgestellt als eine Variable im Dreieck von Fragestellung, Methodik und Gegenstandsbereich und damit eine der Möglichkeiten, neue Erkenntnisse über Literatur zu gewinnen. Doch ein Fach oder eine Teildisziplin ,Korpusliteraturwissenschaft' gibt es (noch) nicht, nicht so jedenfalls, wie es Korpuslinguistik als einen Bereich der Sprachwissenschaft gibt, der in systematisierender wie historischer Absicht natürlichsprachliche Äußerungen sammelt. Auch spricht man in der Literaturwissenschaft und selbst in der Literaturgeschichte nur selten von einem Quellenkorpus, wie das in historischen Fächern üblich ist, wenn unter Quellen die je nach Fragestellung systematische Zusammenstellung möglichst breit angelegter Sammlungen von Zeugnissen verstanden wird. Außerdem fehlt in der Literaturwissenschaft weitgehend die Verbindung von qualitativen und quantitativen Methoden der Textanalyse, wie sie in der Linguistik zu finden ist. Das Fehlen einer Korpusliteraturwissenschaft kann auf drei Entwicklungen in der Literaturwissenschaft zurückgeführt werden. Erstens ist die Literaturwissenschaft stark am Kanon der besonderen Werke ausgerichtet, was auch literaturwissenschaftliche Editionen betrifft. Hinzu kommt zweitens der Bedeutungsverlust der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung seit den 1990er Jahren, als mit dem Ende der Sozialgeschichte als leitendes Forschungsparadigma eine integrierende Fragestellung für die Literaturgeschichte an Geltung verloren hat. Schließlich ist drittens die Literaturwissenschaft fachsystematisch weit von der Linguistik weggerückt. Deren empirische Ansätze qualitativen wie quantitativen Typs spielen in der Literaturwissenschaft kaum eine Rolle.     Herrmann JB. Anschaulichkeit messen. Eine quantitative Metaphernanalyse an deutschsprachigen Erzählanfängen zwischen 1880 und 1926. In: Köppe T, Singer R, eds. Show, don’t tell: Konzepte und Strategien anschaulichen Erzählens . Bielefeld: Aisthesis; 2018: 167-212. ; Die vorliegende Arbeit erforscht mögliche Bedingungen des Zustandekommens eines Anschaulichkeitspotenzials deutschsprachiger Erzähltexte des Zeitraums 1880-1926. Das Vorgehen ist das einer quantitativen Analyse metaphorischen Sprachgebrauchs, wobei ich eine Synthese von Kognitiver Linguistik, formalisierter Korpuslinguistik, gebrauchsbasierter Textlinguistik und traditioneller Rhetorik erprobe. Metaphorische Sprache, und zwar insbesondere konventionalisierte Metaphorik, wird dabei in Form der Hauptwortarten lexiko-grammatikalisch differenziert, um ausgehend von den typischen Diskursfunktionen der Wortarten (v. a. Referenzialierung von Objekten, Zuständen, Prozessen, Eigenschaften, und Relationen) Muster bezüglich eines Anschaulichkeitspotenzials zu erforschen. Das untersuchte Korpus wurde aus dem digitalen Referenzkorpus Deutsches Textarchiv extrahiert und besteht aus den Eingangspassagen 35 literarischer Werke. Der Texteingang wird als Schlüsselstelle der Kommunikation zwischen Text und Leser gewählt, die besondere Anforderungen an die Gestaltung des Diskurses stellt, indem sie repräsentative, aber auch persuasive Funktionen hat.

    Rebora S, Boot P, Pianzola F, et al. Digital humanities and digital social reading. Digital Scholarship in the Humanities . 2021;36(Supplement_2):ii230-ii250. ; Prominent among the social developments that the web 2.0 has facilitated is digital social reading (DSR): on many platforms there are functionalities for creating book reviews, ‘inline’ commenting on book texts, online story writing (often in the form of fanfiction), informal book discussions, book vlogs, and more. In this article, we argue that DSR offers unique possibilities for research into literature, reading, the impact of reading and literary communication. We also claim that in this context computational tools are especially relevant, making DSR a field particularly suitable for the application of Digital Humanities methods. We draw up an initial categorization of research aspects of DSR and briefly examine literature for each category. We distinguish between studies on DSR that use it as a lens to study wider processes of literary exchange as opposed to studies for which the DSR culture is a phenomenon interesting in its own right. Via seven examples of DSR research, we discuss the chosen approaches and their connection to research questions in literary studies.

    Herrmann JB. Digitale Geisteswissenschaften = Kultur–x. Presented at the 3. DH-Tag der WWU Münster, Münster. ; In ihrem Vortrag stellt Berenike Herrmann Fragestellungen, Strukturen und Methoden der Bielefelder Digital Humanities vor. Dabei geht sie der Frage nach, was eine digitale Geisteswissenschaft zwischen "Methode und Wahrheit" heute vermag und zukünftig leisten kann. Die Grundannahme ist, dass eine Wissenschaft ihren Gegenstand immer nur durch Modellierung und Approximation beschreiben kann ("Kultur- x"), wobei in den DH Methodenorientierung und Datafication diese epistemologische Distanz besonders ausstellen. Anhand einiger Beispiele aus der datengestützten literatur- und textwissenschaftlichen Forschung in Bielefeld soll das methodologische "x" scharf gestellt, seine Bedingungen auf infrastruktureller Ebene beleuchtet, und nicht zuletzt der Mehrwert für das Erklären und Verstehen etwa fiktionaler Emotionalität, Stil und Laienwertung aufgezeigt werden.

    Herrmann JB, Grisot G. Lieblingsgegenden, Fenster und Mauern. Zur emotionalen Enkodierung von Raum in Deutschschweizer Prosa zwischen 1850 und 1930. In: Geierhos M, Trilcke P, Börner I, et al., eds. DHd2022: Kulturen des digitalen Gedächtnisses. Konferenzabstracts . 2022: 166-170. ; Ausgehend vom übergreifenden Forschungsinteresse einer datenbasierten Komparatistik der deutschsprachigen Länder möchte unser Beitrag erste Ergebnisse berichten über die emotionale Enkodierung von fiktionalem Raum. Anhand des DCHLi (Deutschschweizer Literaturkorpus), zurzeit als Pilotkorpus (76 Texte, 1854-1930, ca. 2 Mio. Wörter), und ausgehend von einem semiotischen Zugang zu textuell enkodierten Emotionen und Raumanalyse legen wir den derzeit gängigen Diktionär-basierten Zugang zu dimensionalen (Valenz, Arousal) und diskreten Emotionen (“Angst”, “Freude”, “Wut”, “Trauer”, „Ekel“) an. Welche unterschiedlichen Typen von Landschaft und Raum gibt es in der fiktionalen deutschschweizer Prosa zwischen 1854 und 1930, und wie sind diese jeweils emotional enkodiert? Unsere quantitative Befunde stellen Bezüge her zu ikonischen Kultur/Natur-Dichotomien im Erbe der Romantik, zu historischen Stadt/Land-Konstellationen, aber auch zu einem nationalliterarischen Rahmen mit vielbeklagtem Schweizer “Mythos” einerseits und identifikatorischen (oftmals Alpen-orientierten) Angeboten für die “imagined community” (Anderson) der sogenannten Willensnation andererseits. Wir schließen mit einer methodologischen Reflexion der Sentimentanalyse innerhalb der DH.
