Ihmisen rajoilla: Epävarma tulevaisuus ja ei-inhimilliset toimijuudet Leena Krohnin Pereat munduksessa Leena Krohn (s. 1947) tunnetaan poikkeuksellisen omaleimaisesta kirjallisesta tuotannostaan, jossa arkitodellisuus, fantasia ja tieteisfiktiiviset tulevaisuudenkuvaukset limittyvät toisiinsa. Juha Raipolan väitöstutkimus keskittyy tarkastelemaan Krohnin teosta Pereat mundus : Romaani eräänlainen (1998) näkökulmasta, jossa tärkeimpään rooliin nousevat erilaiset filosofiset ja eettiset kysymykset inhimillisen todellisuuden ääriviivoista ja reunaehdoista sekä ihmiselämän merkityksestä osana laajempaa luonnonkokonaisuutta. Teos nähdään tutkimuksessa eräänlaisena Krohnin tuotannon vedenjakajateoksena, joka kuitenkin havainnollistaa myös yleisemmin Krohnin teosten ominaispiirteitä. Väitöskirjan keskiössä ovat tavat, joilla Pereat mundus suhteellistaa ihmisen kykyjä ja mahdollisuuksia ympäröivän todellisuuden hallintaan ja ymmärtämiseen. Tutkimus osoittaa ekokriittisen kirjallisuudentutkimuksen keinoin, kuinka teos korostaa inhimillisen tiedon ja olemassaolon rajoja ja kyvyttömyyttämme ohjailla tulevaisuutta haluttuun suuntaan. Samalla tutkimus tarkastelee, kuinka Pereat mundus kyseenalaistaa arkiajattelussamme selviltä tuntuvia rajoja inhimillisen ja ei-inhimillisen todellisuuden väliltä. Esiin nousevat muun muassa ihmisen ja luonnon, ihmisen ja koneiden sekä ihmisen ja eläimen väliset epäselvät ja ratkeamattomat suhteet. Väitöskirja käy läpi erilaisia kirjallisia keinoja, joiden avulla Krohnin teos painottaa tulevaisuuden epävarmuutta ja ihmistoiminnan kiinteitä sidoksia ympäröivään todellisuuteen. Näihin keinoihin lukeutuu muun muassa teoksen poikkeuksellinen kokonaisrakenne, joka näyttäytyy eräänlaisena romaani- ja novellikerronnan välimuotona. Rakenne mahdollistaa esimerkiksi ihmiskunnan kokonaisuuden tarkastelun eräänlaisena teoksen kollektiivisena päähenkilönä, joka joutuu kohtaamaan eri luvuissa erilaisia uhkia ja epävarmuuksia. Huomio kohdistuu myös teoksen tieteisfiktiivisiin elementteihin, joita hyödynnetään tieteisfiktion lajiperinteestä poikkeavilla tavoilla. Toisin kuin erityisesti populaari tieteisfiktio, jonka juonirakenne osoittaa yleensä selkeästi, millainen tulevaisuus näyttäytyy toivottuna, Pereat mundus jättää tällaisen pohdinnan viime kädessä lukijalle. Tutkimus tuokin esiin, kuinka teos rakentuu keskeisiltä osiltaan erilaisten rakenteellisten ja temaattisten ratkeamattomuuksien, epävarmuuksien ja paradoksien varaan ja tarjoaa lukijalle enemmän kysymyksiä kuin vastauksia. Metodiikaltaan ja teorioiltaan tutkimus edustaa uutta avausta kotimaisen kirjallisuudentutkimuksen kentällä. Tutkimus rakentuu erityisesti posthumanismin ja materiaalisen ekokritiikin tutkimusvälineistöille, joiden laajempi soveltaminen ekokriittiseen kirjallisuudentutkimukseen on kansainvälisestikin vasta aluillaan. Tutkimuksen yhtenä tavoitteena onkin ollut erityisesti materiaalisen ekokritiikin teoriavälineiden edelleen kehittäminen kirjallisuudentutkimuksen tarpeisiin. ; In this dissertation, I deal with questions arising from the uncertain future and non-human agencies in Leena Krohn's short story composite Pereat mundus . Romaani eräänlainen ( Pereat mundus : A novel, sort of, 1998). I focus on representations of the future and future-oriented thinking in Krohn's work. In my analysis, I draw a connection between the theme of uncertainty and the portrayal of agentic force by non-human things, beings and technologies in Pereat mundus . I argue that Pereat mundus includes several narratives in which non-human agencies are set against the intentions and desires of human individuals, and that these narratives demonstrate the incapability of human subjects to totally control the non-human world and their own future. Theoretically, my study is situated within the contexts of material ecocriticism and – more generally – posthumanism. Influenced by the so-called 'material turn' in the humanities and social sciences, material ecocriticism addresses and explores the agency of matter and material bodies. Unlike the traditional view that associates agency with intentionality and therefore human intelligence, material ecocriticism is informed by the notion that the world we inhabit is filled with intermingling agencies that are entangled in endless ways. Most notably developed by Serenella Iovino and Serpil Oppermann (2014), material ecocriticism proposes that matter should not be considered 'inanimate', passive, inert or unable to convey any independent expression of meaning. Instead, the 'more-than-human' world of toxins, fungi, genes, carcinogenic cells and climate patterns is interpreted as a creative flux of material forces that circulates around and within human bodies. Positioned within the broader framework of posthumanism, material ecocriticism also challenges the separation of humans and non-humans. Agency in general is thus not discussed as an attribute of certain individual actors – rather, it is understood as the dynamic interplay of both human and non-human participants. The theoretical approach of the dissertation is based on the principles of descriptive poetics as laid out by Brian McHale (1994). Defining descriptive poetics as a category of 'middle-range' theory, McHale sees it as a mediator between atheoretical interpretation and purely abstract high theory. In my study, Pereat mundus is thus understood both as a work to be interpreted through an applied theoretical framework and as a detailed fictional work that can possibly shed some new light on theory. With its new and reoriented characteristics, Pereat mundus can be seen as a watershed work in Krohn's oeuvre. Concerned with topical crises and future threats, Pereat mundus differs considerably from Krohn's previous works, which have been studied at length by Pirjo Lyytikäinen (2013). Whereas Krohn's earlier works are set in fictional worlds distanced from all historical particularities, Pereat mundus is riddled with the concerns of contemporary society. In particular, two different contemporary concerns – specific to the late 1990s as well as present-day society – can be identified. The first is the ecological notion that collective human activities are causing unintended consequences in the environment and that these consequences can alter the ultimate fate of the entire human species. While some of the chapters in Pereat mundus are more concerned with transcultural questions pertaining to the death of individuals, the work in its entirety also addresses the possibility and the eventual certainty of the extinction of humankind. The second concern is our growing capability to affect the natural world through technological means. With no natural limit to our abilities to alter material reality, everything that was previously considered transcendental or naturally given is at least theoretically susceptible to artificial replication or simulation. In Pereat mundus , this awareness results in science-fictional speculations about artificial life forms, mind uploading and genetically modified human–animal chimeras. Thematic in its focus, my dissertation approaches Pereat mundus as a short story composite full of uncertainty and ambiguity. The most striking feature of Pereat mundus is the work's overall structure – while the subtitle of Pereat mundus suggests that the work is 'a novel, sort of', the general composition of the work differs considerably from the narrative conventions of the traditional novel. The work has no clear protagonist or a shared setting for its different chapters, and no continuing narrative is systematically developed in the course of the work. Overall, the different chapters of Pereat mundus do not coalesce into a larger narrative, but function as independent short stories. For this reason, my study treats Pereat mundus as a short story composite, where the autonomous stories are connected to each other and the greater whole through intratextual links. The work is divided into more than thirty chapters, most of them dealing with a series of characters named Håkan, who – despite his singular name – is not one person but many. Between these independent narrative segments runs the ongoing story of a character called Dr Keinolempi (Dr Fakelove), a psychotherapist specializing in online counselling. His problematic relationship with an eschatophobic patient sets the tone for the rest of the chapters, which deal in many respects with endings, fears and crises. In different chapters the reader encounters, among other things, stories where human existence is soon to be overtaken by intelligent machines, a story about the sudden diminishing of human intelligence, a story about an apocalyptic encounter with global warming, a story about a group striving for the voluntary extinction of the human species, and a story about a millenarian preacher whose prophecies might be coming true.
