    Der Schriftsteller Wilhelm Genazino übernahm zwischen dem 23. Mai und 10. Juni 2014 die Poetikdozentur an der Universität Heidelberg. Im Mittelpunkt des vom Germanistischen Seminar organisierten Veranstaltungsprogramms standen drei öffentliche Poetikvorträge, in denen sich Genazino mit seinem literarischen Schreiben auseinandersetzte. "Furcht und Zittern der Überempfindlichen – Die Angst vor der Penetranz des Wirklichen" war der erste der drei Vorträge, die der Schriftsteller im Rahmen der Poetikdozentur hielt. Wilhelm Genazino wurde 1943 in Mannheim geboren. Nach einem Volontariat bei der Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung in Heidelberg studierte er Germanistik, Philosophie und Soziologie in Frankfurt am Main. Wilhelm Genazino war Redakteur bei der Frankfurter Satire-Zeitschrift „Pardon“, seit Anfang der 1970er Jahre ist er als freiberuflicher Schriftsteller tätig. Bekannt wurde Genazino mit seiner zwischen 1977 und 1979 erschienenen „Abschaffel“-Trilogie. Im Jahr 2004 erhielt er den Georg Büchner-Preis, der als bedeutendste Literaturauszeichnung in Deutschland gilt. Der Vortrag fand am 27. Mai 2014 in der Aula der Alten Universität statt.

    The transmission of Nordic vernacular laws began in the middle of the thirteenth century and extended long into modernity. Legal manuscripts form a large proportion of all medieval Nordic codices; the legal texts recorded in these codices are well known, and substantial work has been carried out in recent decades on their textual evidence and the material qualities of the codices. This new book considers the way in which materiality constitutes and communicates meaning. The articles in this book discuss the material characteristics of medieval legal manuscripts from Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Iceland, such as size, bindings, bookmarkers, mise en page, paratexts, and the interplay of illuminations and text, as well as indications of usage throughout the Middle Ages. These studies also shed light on the social functions of the written law in medieval Northern Europe. ; Die Überlieferung nordischer Rechtstexte in der Volkssprache begann in der Mitte des dreizehnten Jahrhunderts und erstreckte sich bis weit hinein in die Neuzeit. Juristische Handschriften bilden einen großen Teil aller mittelalterlichen nordischen Handschriften. Die in diesen Handschriften enthaltenen Rechtstexte sind breit untersucht, und es liegen umfangreiche Arbeiten zu Textgestalt und auch materiellen Charakteristiken der einzelnen Handschriften vor. In Verbindung dieser bisher vornehmlich getrennt voneinander betrachteten Eigenschaften adressiert das vorliegende Buch in einem neuen Zugriff, wie die Bedeutung der Texte durch die spezifische Materialität der Texte und Bücher konstituiert und vermittelt wird. Die Aufsätze in diesem Buch befassen sich mit materiellen Eigenschaften mittelalterlicher juristischer Handschriften aus Dänemark, Schweden, Norwegen und Island und fokussiert dabei auf Aspekte wie Größe, Einbände, Lesezeichen, Layout, Paratexte und das Zusammenspiel von Illuminationen und Text. Die Studien werfen auch ein Licht auf die sozialen Funktionen des geschriebenen Rechts im mittelalterlichen Norden Europa.

    Abstract: The mythic quality of Kate Chopin‟s The Awakening (1899) derives from recurrent images of archetypal symbols such as sea, sun, and journey, accompanied by up/down motif representing death and rebirth. Having been decanonized for infringing the traditional codes of marriage and motherhood, Chopin‟s work, this study proves, violates yet another convention, that of the mythological theorists, namely Joseph Campbell‟s. Being a female principle as opposed to Campbell‟s macho hero, Chopin‟s protagonist, Edna undergoes the same archetypal pattern of quest, initiation, and descent into the underworld.     Abstract: The Writing Center at Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU) is a place where students can improve and develop their writing skills by working one-on-one with tutors. This study compares between the progress performance of students who come regularly to the Writing Center to work one-to-one with the same tutor and use the online tutorial services to students who don't visit the Writing Center, but only depend on the traditional classroom instructions and direct instructor's comments and feedback on the writing. This study is divided into two parts. As a start, 80 students were asked to write two in-class essays on two different days. Each of these essays was considered as draft one. Then, in the first part of the study, 58 students sat twice per week one-on-one with the same tutor in order to seek help before writing draft two for the two essays. 29 students met face-to-face with the tutors and the other 29 students worked on-line with the tutors.     Abstract: The aim of the present article is to investigate Alexander Pope's self-fashioning in the light of Pierre Bourdieu's socio-cultural notion of capitals, specifically the symbolic form. Pope endeavors a lot to gain such a prominent status as the most representative poet of his age. He garners all his artistry, eloquence, savoir-faire, family and social milieu to move towards the center of the canon throughout his life. This upward movement comprises a self-fashioning by Pope which sometimes is the means to facilitate his canonization and sometimes it turns into a goal and an end in itself for him. As the highly acclaimed French philosopher, Pierre Bourdieu highlights the importance of symbolic capital in an individual‘s social status. By adopting a biographical and also a comparative approach, the authors tried to highlight the influences of Wollstonecraft's personal life, character, and career, chiefly her A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), on one of William Blake's less-referred-to poems Visions of the Daughters of Albion (1793).     Abstract: This essay deals with the notion of orientalist discourse in Lord Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. Concentrating on the dialectical attitudes towards the "Orient" in Byron's poem the writers try to show, through a contrapuntal textual analysis, how signs emerge of a somewhat stereotypical and often monolithic Orient. It is argued that the work's claim on the authenticity of the representations of the East is a subtle textual strategy.     Abstract: This article discusses Aimiri Baraka‘s concern with the history of black people in his poem "Beginnings: Malcolm". The writers try to shed some light on the way Baraka's historiography challenges the white supremecist discourses through a rewriting of the African American past that blurs the boundaries of myth and history, fact and fiction, in a postmodern manner. It is argued that through the use of the central African myth of Esu/Elegba and drawing on traditions of Christianity and Western literature/culture, Baraka‘s poem offers an uncanny insight into the past
