    In welchen Konzepten und Phantasmen, also: in welchen kategorialen Ordnungen war in der volkssprachigen Adelsliteratur diskursivierbar, was die Literaturwissenschaft ‚Text’ und ‚Überlieferung’ nennt? Hierauf sucht der Beitrag eine Antwort, indem er Problemkonfigurationen mittelalterlicher Textualität in einer Interpretation der „Urstende“ des Konrad von Heimesfurt durchspielt. Narrative und metanarrative Partien werden dabei aufeinander bezogen, dass das in ihnen als Bedingung ihrer Möglichkeit gespeicherte, historisch fremd gewordene Textwissen hervortreten kann.

    This text attempts to follow the roots of Franz Kalka's works, looking for them in different concentric and excentric circles. A first and narrow circle is made up of Kafka's family, with the domineering figure of the authoritarian father. A second and wider circle is that of the Jews in Prague, condemned to a position of outsiders. This condition is also that of the third and still wider circle, that of the German speaking population of Prague at the beginning of the century. The roots that emerge from these circles are conditioning factors for Kafka's own position as an outsider, but at the same time they enable him to take on the role of the poet as prophet. Der Text versucht den Wurzeln des Schaffens Franz Kafkas nachzugehen, und sucht diese in verschiedenen, konzentrischen und exzentrischen Kreisen. Ein erster und enger Kreis ist der der Familie Kafkas, mit der vorherrschenden Figur des autoritären Vaters. Ein zweiter und weiterer Kreis ist der des Prager Judentums, mit dem ihm auferlegten Außenseiterturn, das auch den dritten und noch breiteren Kreis bedingt, und zwar den der deutschsprachigen Bevölkerung Prags am Anfang des Jahrhunderts. Die aus diesen Kreisen sprießenden Wurzeln bedingen das Außenseiterturn Kafkas, befähigen ihn aber auch die Rolle des Dichters als Propheten zu übernehmen.

    Alfred Döblin is a theorist of German Expressionismus and of the epic novel. In "Berlin Alexanderplatz", he shows the theories of his essay "Der Bau des epischen Werks" ("The construction of the epic werk") in practice. The present paper analyses the following aspects of the novel: 1) the development of the plot, 2) the structure, 3) the language, 4) the function of time, 5) the space of the city, 6) the narrator, 7) the characters. Alfred Döblin ist ein Theoretiker des Expressionismus und auch ein Theoretiker des epischen Romans. In seinem Roman "Berlin Alexanderplatz" zeigt er die theoretischen Forderungen seines Essays "Der Bau des epischen Werks" in der Praxis. Der vorliegende Aufsatz untersucht die folgenden Aspekte des Romans: 1) die Entwicklung der Handlung, 2) die Struktur, 3) die Sprache, 4) die Funktion der Zeit, 5) den Raum der Großstadt, 6) den Erzähler, 7) die Figuren.

    The analysis of the Drama "Die Verfolgung und Ermordung Jean Paul Marats dargestellt durch die Schauspielgruppe des Hospizes zu Charenton unter der Anleitung des Herrn de Sade" (1964) by Peter Weiss shows how the author used surrealistic elements such as the theme of madness and the illogical structure of a play within a play. With this play, Weiss was enormously popular throughout the world, and his success as a modern German dramatist is second only to Brecht. Die Analyse des Dramas "Die Verfolgung und Ermordung Jean Paul Marats dargestellt durch die Schauspielgruppe des Hospizes zu Charenton unter der Anleitung des Herrn de Sade" (1964) von Peter Weiss zeigt, wie sich Weiss surrealistischer Elemente, z.B. des Themas des Wahnsinns und der alogischen Struktur des Stückes im Stück, bedient hat. Mit diesem Drama hatte der Autor den größten Erfolg des deutschen Theaters auf den Bühnen der Welt nach Brecht.

    In expressionist poetry we can detect a first major rupture in the relations between man and nature. In expressionist poems such as "Weltende" ("The end of the world") by Jakob van Hoddis, we can read and see the fear and distrust of man in face cf the progress that the industrial revolution has brought. The theme of the destruction of nature in our days caused by modern/post-modern technology may be also read and seen in German literature of the eighties, as for example in the poems of Sarah Kirsch, in which she shows concrete landscapes,

    poisoned rivers, forests and air. In der expressionistischen Lyrik kann man einen ersten großen Bruch in den Beziehungen zwischen Mensch und Natur beobachten. In expressionistischen Gedichten, wie z. B. in "Weltende" von Jakob van Hoddis, werden die menschliche Angst und das Mißtrauen vor dem von der industnellen Revolution gebrachten Fortschritt auf eine schockierende Weise, d.h. durch apokalyptische Bilder, ausgedrückt. Diese Thematik der Naturzerstörung wird in den 80er Jahren auf eine emphatische Weise wiederaufgenommen. Es handelt sich jetzt um eine Naturzerstörung durch die moderne, oder besser: post-moderne, Technologie, d.h. um einen zweiten großen Bruch in den Beziehungen zwischen Mensch und Natur. Unter anderen Sarah Kirsch widmet sich der Aufgabe, die beschädigte Welt von heute, d.h. die betonierte Landschaft, die vergifteten Wälder, Flüsse, und die Verschmutzung der Luft, in Gedichten zu gestalten.

The focus will be on the generation conflict and the text "Suchbild über meinen Vater" by Christoph Meckel (1980). In diesem Artikel geht es darum, Charakteristika des deutschen Expressionismus und ihre Varianten in der deutschen Gegenwartsliteratur nachzuweisen.     This paper aims to investigate the dynamics of text-image interplay as exemplified by various text types applied to second language teaching and translation didactics. Based on examples of texts from the fields of Science, Technology, Literature and Language Teaching, the authors attempt to assess both successful and unsuccessful instances of the application of iconical resources in text production. Some didactic consequences are discussed. Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, die dynamische Wechselbeziehung zwischen Bild und Text bei der didaktischen Bearbeitung verschiedener Textsorten im Rahmen der Fremdsprachen- bzw. Übersetzungsdidaktik zu untersuchen. Am Beispiel von Textsorten aus dem Bereich der Wissenschaft, Technik, Literatur und Sprachvermittlung wird versucht, erfolgreiche und mißlungene Anwendungen ikonischer Mittel bei der Textproduktion unter die Lupe zu nehmen und didaktische Konsequenzen daraus zu ziehen.

    An important role in the coherence of texts is played by the distribution of information in the sentence. The present paper especially examines the beginning of sentences (topics). Which syntactic elements are most adequate to initiate a sentence, and which of their characteristics can be considered responsible for this? After a short review of the pertinent literature, we shall present grammatical, semantic and pragmatic factors that organize topicalization. The point of departure are the patterns of basic serialization as defined by the grammar. Deviations of these patterns can particularly be a result of the principle of known information. In addition to this constitutive principle, we can distinguish five regulative principles that lead to non-marked topicalizations (situation, empathy, iconicity, lengthening terms, text connection). In the closing sections, the positioning of phrasal accents and some special types of topics will be discussed. All the examples given are from modem German. Eine zentrale Rolle für die Kohärenz von Texten spielt die Verteilung der Informationen im Satz. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden vor allem Satzanfänge (Topiks) betrachtet. Welche Elemente (Satzglieder) sind geeignete Anfangselemente, und auf welche Eigenschaften ist dies zurückzuführen? Nach einem Überblick über die einschlägige Literatur werden grammatische, semantische und pragmatische Faktoren vorgestellt, die die Topikalisierung regeln. Den Ausgangspunkt bildet die grammatisch definierte Grundserialisierung. Abweichungen von ihr können sich vor allem aufgrund des Bekanntheitsprinzips ergeben. Neben diesem konstitutiven Prinzip werden fünf weitere, regulative Prinzipien benannt, die zu einer unmarkierten Topikalisierung führen (Situierung, Empathie. Ikonizität, wachsende Glieder, Textkonnektion). In den Schlußkapiteln werden die Plazierung des Satzakzentes und einige besondere Typen von Topiks behandelt. Alle verwendeten Beispiele stammen aus der deutschen Gegenwartssprache.

    German particles usually bring great difficulties to German students. One of these particles, doch, is very often used, especially in conversation. In this paper its various uses are discussed, as well as eases where it can be replaced by other particles, adverbs or conjunctions, without changing the illocution (that is, the intention of the speaker). This study is based on the work of HELBIG, who differentiates eight varieties of doch. Each of them is discussed here according to syntactic, semantic and pragmatic criteria and made explicit through examples. Die deutschen Partikeln bereiten den Deurschlernenden sehr oft Schwierigkeiten. Eine der am häufigsten gebrauchten, insbesondere in der gesprochenen Sprache, ist die Partikel doch. In diesem Artikel werden die verschiedenen Gebrauchsmöglichkeiten von doch untersucht, sowie Fälle, in denen es durch andere Partikeln, Adverbien oder Konjunktionen ersetzt werden kann, ohne daß die Illokution (d.h. die Sprechintention) der Äusserung verändert wird. Die Untersuchung basiert auf dem Werk HELBIGS, der acht Varianten von doch unterscheidet. Jede von ihnen wird hier nach syntaktischen, semantischen und pragmatischen Kriterien untersucht und durch Beispiele erläutert.

    Taking the notion of frame as a base for lexical dexcription, we elaborate a cognitive proverb-model. This model serves as an instrument for the understanding and the translation of proverbs. It makes it possible to trace the proverbs' structural, semantical and pragmatical recurrences in the text. In this paper we show the influence the proverb has on the text and discuss translation problems by means of examples. Partinando da idéia de frame como base para a descrição lexical, elaboramos um modelo cognitivo de provérbios. Este modelo serve de instrumento para a compreensão e tradução de proverbios. Ele permite localizar as suas recorrências estruturais, lexicais, semânticas e pragmáticas no texto. Demonstramos, neste trabalho, a influência do provérbio sobre o texto, e discutimos os cuidados necessários na tradução através de exemplos concretos.

    This paper aims to present a type of verb which serves to connect two or more propositions to each other in a way similar to that carried out by connectors such as conjunctions and prepositions. It is the objective of this paper to classify the types of semantic connections they establish, such as cause and effect, equivalence, and temporality. Verbs with this type of connectivity are called "connection verbs". They are investigated both in German and Portuguese, organized according to the semantic relations they indicate, and described by means of syntactic and semantic criteria. Der vorliegende Aufsatz stellt eine Klasse von Verben vor, die dazu dienen, zwei oder mehr Propositionen zu verbinden, ähnlich wie dies durch Konjunktionen und Präpositionen geschieht. Das Ziel der Arbeit ist, die Typen der semantischen Verbindungen, die sie herstellen, zu klassifizieren: Ursache und Wirkung, Äquivalenz und Temporalität. Verben mit dieser Art von Konnektivität werden Konnektionsverben genannt. Sie werden sowohl für das Deutsche als auch für das Portugiesische untersucht, nach semantischen Relationen geordnet und mit Hilfe semantischer und syntaktischer Kriterien beschrieben.

    In this paper I present two tenses of the German verbal system, the so called Doppelperfekt and Doppelplusquamperfekt. Although these tenses have only been marginally dealt with in the grammars, more studies have recently been made on them within the field of Linguistics. In order to describe these tenses, I will concentrate on the following authors: Hauser-Suida & Hoppe-Beugel (1972), Eroms (1984), Thieroff (1992) und Vater (1994). The tenses will be analysed formally and their meaning and usage illustrated with examples taken from the articles above. In diesem Aufsatz werde ich zwei Tempora der Vergangenheit im Deutschen behandeln. das Doppelperfekt und das Doppelplusquamperfekt. Ein Grund dafür, gerade diese beiden Formen zu beschreiben, liegt darin, daß sie einerseits in den Grammatiken kaum berücksichtigt werden, in entsprechenden linguistischen Arbeiten aber einen neuen Aufschwung bekommen haben. Für die Beschreibung beziehe ich mich überwiegend auf die Arbeiten von Hauser-Suida & Hoppe-Beugel (1992), Eroms (1984), Thieroff (1992) und Vater (1994). Die Formen werden zuerst rein formal und dann in ihrer Bedeutung und Anwendung beschrieben, ergänzt durch Beispiele, die den oben genannten Arbeiten entnommen wurden.

    This paper examines four German transportation verbs with the prefix weg-, concentrating on their syntax and their semantic and pragmatic interpretations. The empirical data investigated are from across-linguistic Corpus of German and Brazilian Portuguese as foreign languages. The analysis is based on the concept of focus, which is defined as a point on the path along which the patient of the process moves. The focus must be either mentioned or contextually evident. Each transportation verb will be able to establish a typical focus. German prefix-verbs with weg- are characterized by a focus-conflict that can be resolved through different interpretation strategies. Der vorliegende Aufsatz untersucht vier deutsche Transportverben mit dem Präfix weg- hinsichtlich ihrer Syntax sowie ihrer semantischen und pragmatischen Interpretationen. Die analysierten empirischen Daten stammen aus einem kontrastiven Korpus des Deutschen und des brasilianischen Portugiesisch als Fremdsprachen. Die Analyse gründet sich auf das Konzept des Fokus, der definiert wird als ein Punkt auf dem vom Patiens des Prozesses durchlaufenen Weg. Der Fokus muß entweder erwähnt werden oder kontextuell evident sein. Jedes Transportverb besitzt die Fähigkeit, einen typischen Fokus zu etablieren. Deutsche Präfixverben mit weg- sind durch einen Fokuskonflikt gekennzeichnet, der durch verschiedene Interpretationsstrategien aufgelöst werden kann.

    This article deals with the notion of reality. During the last twenty years, public discourse in Western societies has identified the opposition between the real and the virtual as one of the cultural key questions. Taking concrete examples as a point of departure, the paper investigates the semantics of the polysemic tems virtual and real. A semiotic model of the relation between (human) organisms, concepts and signs is used in order to demonstrate that the virtual cannot be adequately described as something opposed to reality, but must be seen as an indispensable part of it. The way in which organisms constitute reality is discussed in the light of the basic cognitive operations of categorization and the formation of conceptual relations, and also of their linguistic counterparts. The apparent conflict between the real and the virtual, which has led many critics to develop apocalyptic visions of the end of civilization, is, in fact, a phantom, product of an outdated theory of semantics. Der vorliegende Aufsatz beschäftigt sich mit dem Begriff der Realität. In den letzten zwanzig Jahren hat der öffentliche Diskurs in den westlichen Gesellschaften den Gegensatz zwischen Realem und Virtuellem als eine der kulturellen Schlüsselfragen identifiziert. Ausgehend von konkreten Beispielen untersucht der Artikel die Semantik der polysemen Termini virtuell und real. Ein semiotisches Modell der Beziehung zwischen (menschlichen) Organismen, Konzepten und Zeichen wird verwendet, um zu zeigen, daß das Virtuelle nicht angemessen als etwas dem Realen Entgegengesetztes beschrieben werden kann, sondern daß es als ein unverzichtbarer Teil von ihm betrachtet werden muß. Wie Organismen Realität konstituieren, wird diskutiert im Lichte der grundlegenden kognitiven Operationen der Kategorisierung und der Herstellung konzeptueller Relationen sowie ihrer jeweiligen linguistischen Entsprechungen. Der scheinbare Konflikt zwischen dem Realen und dem Virtuellen, der viele Kritiker veranlaßt hat, apokalyptische Visionen vom Ende der Zivilisation zu formulieren, ist in Wahrheit ein Trugbild, Ausfluß einer veralteten Semantiktheorie.

    This paper tries to give a definition of stereotype and prejudice, taking as a base definitions from Cognitive and Social Psychology and Linguistics. The author comes to the conclusion that stereotypes and prejudice are natural mental stages, necessary for the processing of cognitive input. As a part of human cognition, prejudice must be prevented from becoming socially dangerous. It has to be diminished and modificated by personal contact between individuals of different cultures. O presente artigo procura definir a noção de estereótipo e preconceito, partindo de definições já estabelecidas no âmbito da psicologia cognitiva e social e na lingüística, para chegar à conclusão que estereótipos e preconceitos são instâncias mentais naturais, necessárias no processamento de dados cognitivo. Sendo essas instâncias cognitivas parte da mente humana, deve-se prevenir a formação de preconceitos socialmente perigosos. Estes preconceitos podem ser diminuidos e modificados através do contato pessoal entre individuos de culturas diferentes.

    This paper deals with the linguistic situation of the European Union, especially considering the role played by the German language. Beginning with some general remarks on the historical mechanisms that may influence the relative importance of a given language on a global scale, the history of the German language is discussed with the aim of explaining its present situation as the language with the greatest number of native speakers in Europe. which, at the same time, plays a relatively unimportant role in international communication. Der vorliegende Aufsatz behandelt die Sprachensituation in der Europäischen Union mit Schwerpunkt auf der Rolle der deutschen Sprache. Beginnend mit einigen allgemeinen Bemerkungen zu den historischen Zusammenhängen, die die relative Wichtigkeit einer bestimmten Sprache im Weltmaßstab beeinflussen können, wird die Geschichte der deutschen Sprache mit dem Ziel diskutiert, ihre gegenwärtige Situation als die Sprache mit der größten Zahl von Muttersprachlern in Europa und gleichzeitig einer verhältnismäßig unwichtigen Rolle in der internationalen Kommunikation zu erklären.

Der vorliegende Aufsatz stellt einige der wichtigsten Aspekte der Geschichte des deutschen Exils nach 1933 und der Geschichte des Exils der deutschsprachigen Schriftsteller und Intellektuellen in Brasilien dar.     This essay considers the present state of U.S. scholarship on German exile Literature, focusing on the recent move from a purely literary toward a social and cultural perspective. This move becomes evident in research projects on refugee children as well as in the growing interest for women in exile. The article presents the abundant research opportunities in the U.S., but mentions also voices of frustration and fatigue. Perhaps the generational replacement among North-American Germanists contributes to bring forth a different attitude toward the subject of literary exile. In view of political shifts and technological changes, some reorientation in literary exile studies may be inevitable. Este ensaio trata da presente situação dos estudos norte-americanos sobre literatura alemã de exílio, focalizando a volta recente de um enfoque puramente literário a uma percpectiva social e cultural. Essa volta torna-se evidente em projetos de pesquisa sobre filhas de exilados, bem como no interesse crescente em mulheres no exílio. O artigo apresenta as oporhinidades abundantes de pesquisa nos Estados Unidos, mas observa também indícios de frustração e cansaço. Talvez, a troca de gerações entre os germanistas norte-americanos contribua para criar uma atitude diferente em relação ao assunto do exílio literário. Em vista de modificações políticas e mudanças tecnológicas, uma reorientação dos estudos literários do exílio pode ser inevitável.

    The present paper deals with selected morphological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic characteristics of nominal totalizers in German and in Brazilian Portuguese. In particular, it analyzes the elements 'todo', 'cada', 'ambos' and 'os dois', as well as 'alle', 'jeder', 'der ganze' and 'beide'. In terms of morphology, it describes the formation of gender, number and case forms. In the field of syntax, it focuses on the position of totalizers in the nominal phrase, their relations to determiners and quantifiers, and the functional distribution of declension types. In terms of semantics and pragmatics, it investigates the codification of referential and quantificational information, definiteness and cumulative v distributive totalization. The epistemological interest is defined by the objectives of linguistic comparison between German and Brazilian Portuguese, including the analysis of typical errors committed by language learners in both directions. Der vorliegende Aufsatz behandelt ausgewählte morphologische, syntaktische, semantische und pragmatische Eigenschaften von Nominaltotalisatoren im Deutschen und im brasilianischen Portugiesisch. Im einzelnen werden die Elemente 'todo', 'cada', 'ambos' und 'os dois' sowie 'alle', 'jeder', 'der ganze' und 'beide' behandelt. Hinsichtlich ihrer Morphologie wird die Bildung von Genus-, Numerus- und Kasusformen beschrieben. Im Bereich der Syntax geht es um die Stellung der Totalisatoren in der Nominalphrase, ihre Beziehungen zu Determinantien und Quantoren und um die funktionale Verteilung von Deklinationstypen. Im Bereich der Semantik und Pragmatik geht es um die Kodierung referentieller und quantifikationaler Information, um Definitheit und um kumulative vs. Distributive Totalisierung. Das Erkenntnisinteresse wird durch den Vergleich zwischen dem Deutschen und dem brasilianischen Portugiesisch bestimmt, wobei auf typische Fehler von Sprachlernern in beiden Richtungen eingegangen wird.
