Preliminary Material -- Introduction -- Jews in Portugal and the Beginnings of Polemical Literature -- Portuguese Anti-Semitic Literary Production: Forms, Objectives, and Reception (17th – 18th Centuries) -- The New Christian Image -- Continuity and Change: The Different Currents of Anti-Jewish Literature -- Conclusions -- Annex 1: Inquisitorial Medals and Diplomas -- Annex 2: The Auto-da-Fé Sermon in Lisbon on May 5th, 1624 -- Sources and Bibliography -- Index of Names and Places. This book scrutinizes literary works based on Judaism, Jews and their descendants, written or printed by the Portuguese, from the forced conversion of Jews in 1497, until the ending of the distinction between New and Old Christians in 1773. It tries to understand what motivated this vast literary production, its different currents, and how they evolved. Additionally, it studies the image of New Christians and seeks the reasons for the perpetuation of this perception of Jewish descendants in the Early Modern Portuguese world. The Imaginary Synagogue seeks to identify which Jews and which ‘synagogue’ those authors constructed in their texts and their reasons for doing so, and offers conclusions on the self-affirmed Catholic importance of this literary current

"Mass by Mortar presents an in-depth exploration of one of the greatest illusionists in literature, Jorge Luis Borges. His tale" The Library of Babel "is an illustrious example of its playful ability, though not only because of the inverted world imagined in it in the past. which a library, which supposedly contains all possible combinations of all letters, words, and books, is searched by devout librarians for divinely prefabricated truths, for one also has to deal with the irony of Borges's narration, which constantly puts check the narrator's claims about the universality of the library, including the very possibility of exhausting the possible meanings through a combinatorial process.

How the World Has Changed Social Media is the first book by Why We Post, a book series that investigates the findings of nine anthropologists who have spent 15 months living in communities in different parts of the world, including Brazil, Chile, China, England, India, Italy, Trinidad and Turkey. This book offers a comparative analysis that summarizes research findings and analysis of the impact of social media on politics and gender, education, and commerce. What is the result of the increased emphasis on visual communication? Are we becoming more individualistic or more social? Why is public social media so conservative? Why can't equality on the internet nullify inequality? How did memes become the moral police of the internet?

The word “batuque” (drums) has a multiple history. In general, until today, it is used to name different musical performances and practices produced by Africans or Afro-descendants. This book investigates the historical processes around the “batuques” during the Portuguese early colonialism in Lourenço Marques – currently Maputo – and in southern Mozambique (1890-1940). The categories forged by Portuguese colonial discourses were not able to grasp the multiplicity of experiences of African populations and their practices. Through theoretical and methodological Social History framework, perspectives based on the history “from below” and microhistory research in archives, the “batuques” are, in this book, an object of investigation and a privileged window to analyze resistance, tensions and daily arrangements of those who were subordinated by the Portuguese colonizing power in the region.

Publicado originalmente como Last Day Every Day: Figural Thinking from Auerbach and Kracauer to Agamben and Brenez, em 2012, por Dead Letter Office, uma série da editora punctum books.

This book intends to examine the films of João Canijo and their ties to representations of national identity. For that purpose, we did a review of literature on Portuguese cultural identity in its diverse dimensions (historical, literary and anthropological), focusing on the importance of Salazar’s ideology and the current identity debates. In the second part of this thesis, we try to analyse eight feature films made by the director, proposing the idea of a dramaturgy of violence, through intertextuality with Greek tragedy and film melodrama, which gives a perspective of a representation of contemporary Portugal, based on a patriarchal society and its violence. We argue the importance of concepts such as non-inscription, by José Gil, or the repressed, by Eduardo Lourenço, to comprehend the films. At last, our analysis debates the issue of realism in cinema, through the prism of contemporary changes suggested by the work of the filmmaker, which fuses fictional and documentary elements. Finally, we suggest a type of dramaturgy of violence in João Canijo’s films that try to question the existing images of Portuguese identity and its cultural representations.

As transnational extractivism, neo-fascist politics, and economies of abandonment and disposability expand around the world, can we facilitate situated practices of storytelling and worldmaking that enliven futures propelled by the forces of indignation, desire, and relationality? Despite Dispossession: An Activity Book extends an invitation to restore and reinvent bonds of reciprocity with the land, humans, and non-humans, while envisioning transformative and shared horizons. This collaborative endeavor takes as its point of departure the contested realities and public struggles of the dispossessed. Bringing together seven site-sensitive engagements, the contributors develop their artistic works, as well as speculative tools and activities, to conjure worlds to come in the ruins of dispossession. The result is a combination of subtle theoretical reflection, pluriversal modes of inquiry, and unruly epistemic intervention. Drawing its inspiration from decolonizing methodologies, Black aesthetics, and epistemologies of the South, the project gathers these influences for a novel experiment that demonstrates how arts-based researchers confront dispossession through itinerant practices of resistance.

Main description: This volume is devoted to an examination of the vast range of relations existing between Brazil and its Hispano-American neighbours. The Latin American context in which Brazil is embedded is determined by a multifarious network of bi- and multi-lateral relations that has been given little attention by scholars so far. The volume sets out to make a contribution to a closer engagement with the intercultural dynamics informing those relations. The cross-disciplinary aspect is very marked. Alongside articles from representatives of literary and film studies, philosophy, and the social and political sciences, there are also studies illuminating theological, historical, and anthropological aspects

Contributions collected here discuss the experiences of the citizens of Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe, and suggest some answers to the challenges they face. Each of the authors presents studies that carefully examine the situation and the political, social and economic context suggest that the progress made in recent decades in women's rights and empowerment, democratic governance, Human rights, access to employment, education and health, are still very modest on the long journey our countries must make to win the welfare of citizens. Therefore imperative that dynamic and competent social movements favour process processes and more effective and sustainable development.

The studies presented in this volume examine the intertwining of corporeality and temporality in Brazilian literature from interdisciplinary perspectives. In some narratives, the texts make explicit the protagonism of the illness itself and the ambivalent relationship that is built up between sick or aging people and their former selves. In this context, different ways of excluding bodies that are no longer young or 'healthy' and are kept out of the public sphere are problematized. Silence and loneliness, but also the urgency of living to tell, are often the driving forces behind the narratives and poems studied.
