eng: In her essay ‘Der Mensch als Weib’ (1899) Lou Andreas-Salomé compares women to trees: both produce their ‘fruit’ unintentionally. This comparison seems to allow very little scope for active female creativity, let alone ingenuity. Closer inspection, however, reveals a more differentiated view of questions of gender and creativity. By bringing biology together with psychology and outlining the differences between male and female desire, Salomé establishes the feminine as an entity in its own right. Although she denies the existence of female genius, women and geniuses suspiciously seem to have a lot in common in her writing: both embody a heightened self-sufficiency through their very essence. Characters who illustrate the complex relations between self-fulfilment, desire and creativity can be found throughout Salomé’s literary work; I take as my example here the early ‘Novellencyclus’ Menschenkinder (1899). Hans Holtema (‘Mädchenreigen’), Hildegard (‘Das Paradies’) and Irene von Geyern (‘Zurück ans All’) possess skills that can best be described as ingenium, an innate gift, which is often seen as a challenge by their (male) surroundings. Rather than offering dogmatic answers, Salomé’s novellas as well as her theoretical work around 1900 emphasise the richness of debates about gender and genius.

Before the mid-nineteenth century there were few subjects in the altarpiece tradition of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland in which the central figures accompanying Christ were female. Seldom used or new motifs involving female characters now emerged behind the altar. Most of the altarpieces with central women figures were painted in Finland at the turn of the twentieth century by the artist Alexandra Frosterus-Såltin (1837-1916). In the nineteenth century Frosterus-Såltin was the only artist in Finland who realized the motif of ‘Christ Appearing to Mary Magdalene’ in her altarpieces. In her final representation of the theme, the altarpiece in the church of the Finnish Jepua commune, she chose an unusual approach to the motif. My interest in the subject lies in the motif’s affective nature - the ways in which altarpieces in general have been actively used to evoke feelings. Moreover, I consider the influence that Alexandra Frosterus-Såltin, a significant agent in Finnish sacral art, had on consolidating the position of women’s agency in the Finnish altarpiece tradition. I examine the motif in relation to the cultural and political atmosphere of the era, especially the changing gender roles and the understanding of women’s social agency as the women’s movement emerged.

After decades of challenges to many other definitional elements of ‘pilgrimage', the centrality of motion and physical movement, whether literally enacted or realized virtually or through metaphor, remains largely uncontested. This paper examines practices of creative writing and home decorating among participants in the 1990s British subculture of ‘Aristasia' (an outgrowth of a New Religious Movement known in the 1970s and 80s as ‘Madrianism' but now more commonly referred to as ‘Filianism') to argue that these practices functioned together for participants as static pilgrimages, accomplishing the same psychological and social tasks as traditional modes while suppressing even metaphorical concepts of travel or motion. This unique form of pilgrimage, it is argued, was made possible by traits identified by Carole Cusack (2010) as defining a category of ‘invented religions'—an analysis that supports Sarah MacMillan's (2011) emphasis on ‘place and body' as the constitutive elements of pilgrimage by demonstrating practically how these elements might provide pilgrimage functions in the absence of motifs of motion. In further elaborating how the deliberate suppression of such motifs supports metaphysical views that symbolically align motion with the loss of the sacred and the breakdown of social order, this case study also extends the theories of Peter Geschiere and Birgit Meyer (1999), as well as William Swatos and Luigi Tomasi (2002), on pilgrimage and globalization by highlighting the unanticipated development that modernity's dissolution of place might paradoxically open imagined spaces from which the fluidity of modernity might be challenged and critiqued. In all of these ways, the Aristasian example suggests that pilgrimage definitions dependent on motion may be of limited applicability to emerging forms of spirituality.

This paper deals with the Rambo, Farhadian, and HaarFarris multidisciplinary theoretical framework of conversion. It studies religious change by using a heuristic model of conversion consisting of seven stages: context, crisis, quest, encounter, interaction, commitment, and consequences. The Rambo et al. model serves as a framework for integrating research based on different approaches, and providing a fuller understanding of the multilayered processes involved in conversion. Applying this model to qualitative interviews to people affiliated to the IBISG (the Italian branch of Soka Gakkai), I concluded that data confirm the Rambo et al. theoretical framework. In particular, the decision to join the IBSG is an active, complex, and dynamic process. It depends either on intrapsychic or interpersonal and social factors. Moreover, the conversion is characterized by the peculiar aspects of the movement and the strategies used in order to recruit followers. In conclusion, my underlying assumption is that conversion is a process of religious change that takes place within a dynamic field, involving people, institutions, events, ideas, and experiences. The study of conversion must take into account not only the personal dimension, but also the social, cultural, and religious dynamics in which the convert is embedded.
