Although few critics deny Thackeray's position as a major novelist, he has had comparatively little of the kind of critical attention that has been devoted to Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, or Henry James in the last thirty years. His curious combinations of satire and sentiment, geniality and deviousness, snobbery and anti-snobbery, and his habits of retreating from one disguise to another, have made him difficult to deal with, and his practice of exposing his stories as fictions has evoked hostility in many critics who are none the less fascinated by him. In this original and revealing study of the major novels, Juliet McMaster contends that Thackery is a consummate artist and a highly sophisticated ironist, exploiting to the full the potential of the various personae he adopts, and introducing ambiguity deliberately, to sharpen the reader's moral perceptions and to evoke the complexity of experience itself

Great moments of theatrical achievement have often coincided with moments of national excitement and tension. In Ireland, after the death of Parnell in 1891, cultural and political nationalists had urgent need of each other's vitality and vision, as both worked towards the common goal of liberating Ireland from British political and literary domination. But the political and cultural nationalists were destined to part company when the reality of an independent state seemed imminent: artists began to face the truth about their country and themselves and portrayed Ireland as it was, not as the nationalists wished to be. This book is about the writers who moulded the mind of modern Ireland: Yeats who saw in the dramatic movement the successful overturning of the doctrines that had dominated his country since the days of Young Ireland; Synge and O'Casey who presented with uncompromising brutality the suffering of Irishmen who found little solace in nationalistic abstractions, whose only weapons for survival were their own native cunning, imagination, and with; Shaw who regarded nationalism as a necessary but retrograde step that stood between Ireland its proper place in a wider European community; Beckett who takes us beyond roots and nationalism and whose work seems to imply that nationalism in either a political or cultural sense is now outdated and outstated. The essays in this volume were first presented at the second inter-university seminar in Irish Studies held at St Michael's College, University of Toronto. The contributors are experts in the field of Irish Studies: David R. Clark, George Mills Harper, David Krause, Thomas MacAnna, Roger McHugh, Ann Saddlemyer, Michael J. Sidnell, Francis Warner, and Robert O'Driscoll. This is not, however, an arbitrary collection of papers, but the first systematic exploration of modern Irish drama since Una Ellis-Fermor's The Irish Dramatic Movement in 1939. It covers the period from the founding of the Abbey Theatre to the work of Samuel Beckett. This volume is essential reading for everyone interested in modern Irish history and literature

Professor States provides nothing less than a new theory of the drama based upon the principles of irony and dialectic. Very close in approach to the Continental structuralists, he treats irony, not as a literary device or as an attitude in the mind of the playgoer, but as a means of confronting reality-a way of testing and resolving conflicting ideas. Pointing out the limitations of conventional categories such as comedy, tragedy, and tragicomedy, he views drama instead as a vehicle for perceiving and ordering the possibilities of human experience. After setting forth his thesis boldly and persuasively, Professor States explores other mod es such as the epic and the lyric and shows how they interact with the dramatic principle. He manages to cover, in a minimum amount of space, the entire range of dramatic styles and periods, placing special emphasis on playwrights of universal appeal like Sophocles, Shakespeare, Chekhov, Ibsen, Shaw, and Beckett

The essays in this collection were read at the Shaw Seminars held at Brock University, St. Catherines, Ontario, and at the Shaw Festival, Niagara-on-the-Lake, during the summers of 1966, 1967, and 1968. The Shaw Seminar is designed to enhance the playgoer's understanding and appreciation of live drama by bringing together people with broad ranges of intersts in the theatre. These essays represent the current thriving interest in both live theatre and engaging criticism. There is a consumer purpose in the board range of topics in these essays that of examining, from quite different points of view, either Shaw's skill as a dramatist or his relationship to a tradition of ideas that contributed to the shaping of his dramatic technique. In some of the criticism in this collection, there is an analysis of both the shaping of ideas and the playwright's skill. The first essay, for example, written by Alan Dosener, explores Shaw's first produced play, Wildowers' Houses, through what would currently be called "historical" and "new critical" techniques. The second essay, by Stanley Weintraub, deals with the genesis of Man and Superman relying almost exclusively on material and events preceding its production. Although concerned primarily with Somerset Maugham's play, The Circle, Brian Parker's paper points out contrasts between Shaw and Maugham, "largely in Shaw's favour," that "clarify the qualities that are peculiarly Maugham's." This problem of Shaw's idea and their origins is the topic of the essay by Warren Smith, who analyses Shane's debt to the numerous societies to which he belonged. Similar to the essays dealing mainly with outside influences on Shaw is James Merritt's essay on Shaw and the pre-Raphaelites. Marritt outlines the historical background of the pre-Raphaelite movement and proceeds to point our the characteristics of the movement that influenced Shaw and where they surface again in his drama. Clifford Leech's essay, "Shaw and Shakespeare," is important for the light it casts on two problems frequently associated with Shaw's dramas the first is whether Shaw's play with last; the second is how Shaw ranks in comparison with other playwrights, particularly Shakespeare. The last essay, by Martin Meisel, deals with the relationship between Shaw's plays and his political thinking. An attempt to reinterpret Shaw for modern audiences, this collection of essays will appeal not only to Shavian scholars, but to anyone who has been delighted and stimulated by the playwright's keen wit and sensitive awareness of social issues

At the centre of China's Cultural Revolution in its first stages stands the ambiguous figure of Wu Han. Occupying until the mid-sixties a favoured position among the intellectual elite of the People's Republic, he was the eighth-ranking figure in the Chinese Communist Party, and his Peking Opera Hai Jui's Dismissal was performed all over China. Gradually it became apparent that Wu Han was using Hai Jui to lampoon Chairman Mao Tse-tung and the core policies of the CPP. Other dissidents began to pen articles and plays on similar themes. For several years Mao chafed under these literary attacks, but in late 1965 he retaliated. A sudden, scathing attack on Wu Han and his play by an obscure newspaper editor marked the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, a cataclysm in which the Party leadership was decimated while Mao regained full supremacy. This volume presents the first translation of Wu Han's plays and helps to clarify the obscure origins of a national phenomenon that was at once intellectual, social, and political
