Operatic Formenlehre seems to be alive and well—witness the wealth of publications on the solita forma (after Ritorni, Basevi, and Powers) and on concerto-like sonata forms in Mozart arias as early as the 1768 La finta semplice (after Mann and Rosen). But even standard operatic forms have often been thwarted—throughout opera’s long history—by dramatic exigencies. The purpose of this chapter is to explore and define subcategories of deformations in operatic storm scenes by identifying formal types along the continuum between closed operatic numbers and continuous, fragmentary musical flow. Formal (and deformational) categories are examined here in light of the topos of storm scenes from operatic selections of the Baroque, Galant, and Romantic periods, and avoiding the more traditional loci of continuous music, such as act finales.

Mostly thanks to its noninvasiveness, thermal ablation is a widely used technique to treat tumors in organs like liver, kidney and so on. With this technique tumor tissue necrosis is due to induced high temperature gradients. These gradients can be induced by electromagnetic energy if a needle that emits radiofrequencies or microwaves is used, by acoustic energy when focused ultrasound beams are employed, by light energy if the tumor is heated with lasers, or by cryoablation, in which necrosis is induced by very low temperatures. Nowadays, the challenge is to provide physicians of new techniques that allow to improve thermal ablation efficiency in terms of ablated zone extension, cancer recurrence and others. A technique proposed is based on time-variable modulated-heat protocols to optimize ablation zone. The present chapter is divided in three sections. In the first one, thermal ablation techniques are introduced, together with techniques used to estimate thermal damage. Next, heat transfer models for human tissue are reviewed, together with techniques used to calculate heat generation caused by hyperthermia. Finally, in the third section, a review of a modulating-heat protocol is proposed to optimize tumor necrotic zones. The scope of this chapter is to provide an overview of modeling techniques proposed during the years, and to introduce the potential of modulating-heat techniques.

Dataveillance, as part of a technological dystopia within children’s literature is often combined with narratives about adolescence. This paper analyses the depiction of surveillance technology in the life of young adults and children within recent fiction. The two exemplary texts analyzed are the children’s audio drama Die Nanny-App by Angela Gerrits (2018) and the ‘Eleria-Trilogie’ (2012–2014) by Ursula Poznanski. By placing a young adult as narrator and hero/heroine center stage, both texts depict the experience of adolescence as a personal crisis within an educational system under surveillance. The heroines deal with the role of tracking device technology as a paradoxical and powerful weapon, which may serve as an extended element of self-regulation as well as a device of parental and/or governmental control. ; www.peterlang.com/view/title/69884

The technical possibilities of extra-literary reality have developed rapidly in recent years – today we find ourselves in the age of surveillance capitalism. The literary narratives of the last ten years reflect the changing figures of thought; away from George Orwell’s 'Big Brother' towards 'Big Other.' The article provides an overview of contemporary German-language surveillance narratives and highlights analogies and differences to the classic dystopia of the 20th century. ; www.peterlang.com/view/title/69884
