In this collection, acclaimed Jamaican poet Kei Miller dramatizes what happens when one system of knowledge, one method of understanding place and territory, comes up against another. We watch as the cartographer, used to the scientific methods of assuming control over a place by mapping it, is gradually compelled to recognize-even to envy-a wholly different understanding of place, as he tries to map his way to the rastaman's eternal city of Zion. As the book unfolds the cartographer learns that, on this island of roads that "constrict like throats," every place-name comes freighted with history, and not every place that can be named can be found. Courtly Visions: The Ise Stories and the Politics of Cultural Appropriation traces—through the visual and literary record—the reception and use of the tenth-century literary romance through the seventeenth century. Ise monogatari ( The Ise Stories ) takes shape in a salon of politically disenfranchised courtiers, then transforms later in the Heian period (794-1185) into a key subtext for autobiographical writings by female aristocrats. In the twelfth century it is turned into an esoteric religious text, while in the fourteenth it is used as cultural capital in the struggles within the imperial household. Mostow further examines the development of the standardized iconographies of the Rinpa school and the printed Saga-bon edition, exploring what these tell us about how the Ise was being read and why. The study ends with an Epilogue that briefly surveys the uses Ise was put to throughout the Edo period and into the modern day

Beginning with the literary works of Homer and Sophocles, she also expands her analysis to the philosophical works of Plato and Aristotle

Until now, scholars have largely ignored Apollonius of Rhodes's deep interest in secret cults, arcane rituals, paradoxa, and magic. The present study extensively explores this material with special emphasis on its function in the Argonautica. Based on this complementary methodological presentation, the book is geared to both religious historians and literary scholars

Nonnus, a 5th-century poet from Panopolis (Egypt), composed the Dionysiaca, a mythological epic in 48 books, as well as a paraphrase of the Gospel of St John. He has long been a neglected and misrepresented figure. These 24 essays by an international team of experts place the poet in his time's educational, philosophical, religious and cultural context. The book inaugurates a new era of research for Nonnus and Late Antique poetics on the whole

    Notes:

This collection of essays demonstrates how new media and genres as well as unnatural narratives challenge classical forms of narration in ways that call for the development of analytical tools and modelling systems that move beyond classical structuralist narratology. The articles thus contribute to the further development of both transmedial and unnatural narrative theory, two of the most important manifestations of postclassical narratology

    Notes:

In contemplating depictions of the crucifixion, observers have generally overlooked an important provocative element: Jesus is put to death as a latro, an outlaw, between two other latros. For this reason, references to latros in the Bible, in Eremite and monastic texts, as well as in later Christian writings are more than a mere literary device. They offer a previously unexplored and underappreciated window into a theology of freedom

    Notes:

The Carmen Saliare is one of the most puzzling texts of ancient Latin tradition. This book offers a new commentary of the surviving fragments of this hymn and addresses the several issues it poses from linguistic, philological and cultural points of view. The analysis of all the testimonies suggests new interpretative paths that shed new light on the text and help to better understand the complex puzzle of the Carmen Saliare

Author and authorship have become increasingly important concepts in Byzantine literary studies. Main description: How is an incident's flow connected with the structure of a public? What structural difference exists between the public and a hidden, unnoticed, or only subsequently recognized course of an incident? The contributions to this volume show that an event becomes an incident precisely because it is made public if the respective public structure includes all media conditions under which an event appears to be an incident at all. Otherwise it is precisely by surpassing previous limits, habits, and rules of the public - transforming the structure of the public - that the event becomes an incident
