    The article engages in a close reading of Goethe's sonnet "Mächtiges Überraschen", published in the sonnet cycle of 1807. In it the poetic voice evokes a mountain river whose course is suddenly interrupted by the limiting force of a dam. Paradoxically, however, the effect of this is not stagnation, but the emergence and celebration of a "new life". This paradox will be illuminated by a discussion of Goethe's "Morphologie" as a universal scientific method. Morphology studies the infinite variety of (natural) forms while also insisting on their individual limitation. Goethe's understanding of life lingers on the co-presence of "coined form" and "living development" as he formulates it in "Urworte. Orphisch". "Mächtiges Überraschen" is read as a poem that embodies this fundamental polarity. The sonnet refers time and again to the borders and limitations of both the natural image it evokes and its own poetic properties. Simultaneously, it suggests the transgression of these limitations on both a formal (or structural) and a metaphorical level. As a poetological sonnet, "Mächtiges Überraschen" unifies the representation (of a natural event) with a reflection on representation as such. The announcement of a "new life" in the last stanza of the poem is thus read as an announcement of its own coming-into-being.

    This paper seeks to demonstrate the ways in which Bachmann's work constitutes a prime case for examining the scope and the boundaries of philological research. It does so by focusing on Bachmann‘s fragmentary and unfinished novel, "Das Buch Franza" [1965-1966], exploring the text and its author in an interdisciplinary light. Forming part of Bachmann's uncompleted "Todesarten"-Projekt, "Das Buch Franza" deals with the continuing legacy of fascism and its displaced forms in the post-war era. In its thematisation of the traumatic and necessarily belated after-effects of the Second World War and the Holocaust, Bachmann‘s text draws on various disciplines and discourses, namely geology, archaeology and psychoanalysis. I consider the ways in which the interdisciplinary ambitions of the text reflect Bachmann‘s struggle for a new form of representation, one that adequately mirrors the concerns of her society. Finally, drawing on Bachmann‘s own theoretical reflections on the field of literary study in her Frankfurt Lectures on poetics, I trace the ways in which the author's work repeatedly encourages us to adopt multiple disciplinary perspectives, as well as privileging literature with a utopian function that exceeds any generic or disciplinary boundaries.

Das Doppel von Hegemonial-Konkurrenz in der Arbeiterbewegung und neusachlicher Funktionalitätsfaszination (ca. 1917–1933) 3. Das Doppel von Produktionsverherrlichung als politischer Systemfeier und industriepopularisierender Sachliteratur (ca. 1933–1961) 4. Das Doppel von industrieweltlichem Sozialrealismus und politischer Systemagitation. (ca. 1961–1987) Arbeiterliteratur im engeren Sinne fundiert sich zunächst entscheidend in einer vom Industrieproletariat ausgehenden, gesellschaftlichen Zukunftsperspektive. Sie ist in diesem strikteren Sinne Teil von Arbeiterkultur. Arbeiterkultur war – zugespitzt – geprägt durch Arbeitsplatz, Familie und Verein. Als solches ist sie natürlich auch Gegenstand von Arbeiterliteratur gewesen. Aber Arbeiterliteratur ist darüber hinaus durch die Arbeiterkultur formbestimmt. Sie ist in diesem Sinne weder ein Ausdruck der sozialen Lage der Arbeiter noch der Reflex eines Klassenbewußtseins. Ihre Spezifik besteht zunächst vielmehr darin, den, wie Klaus-Michael Bogdal es ausdrückt, "Prozeß der Subjektkonstituierung der Arbeiter" zu verstärken und zu sichern, "indem sie einen wirksamen Code der Ich-Rede zur Verfügung stellt". Arbeiter-Schriftsteller bedienten sich mit der Literatur eines Bereichs, der traditionell als besonders intensi-ver und höchster Ausdruck von Subjektivität galt, um darin ein "kollektives Arbeiter-Subjekt" zu imaginieren. Oder anders gesagt: In der historischen Arbeiterliteratur konstituierte sich in Literatur, im Medium emphatischer Subjektivität, ein Schreiben in transindividuell-sozietärer Perspektive. Das prägt vor allem die frühe Phase der Arbeiterliteratur im 19. Jahrhundert.

    Partizipien und Adjektive gehören zu Sprachmitteln, die bei der Personendarstellung zur Beschreibung des Äußeren, der Interessen und der geistigen Welt in spezifischen Textsorten (hier: in Kontaktanzeigen lesbischer Frauen im Alter über 50 Jahre) verwendet werden. Im Vergleich zum Adjektiv kann das Partizip die zeitliche Dimension einer Eigenschaft oder der Lebenserfahrung ausdrücken; auf diese Weise können Sprechende den Wert der jeweiligen Eigenschaft oder Lebenserfahrung hervorheben. Das Partizip wird in bestimmten Kontexten bevorzugt, denn es kann die persuasive und appellative Funktion des Textes intensivieren. Die Autorin dieses Beitrags analysiert Motive und Strategien des Partizip-Usus' aus pragmalinguistischer Perspektive in 100 Kontaktanzeigen in der deutschen Frauenzeitschrift 'EMMA'.

    Hans-Georg Soldat (Berlin) arbeitete als Literatur-Redakteur beim RIAS in West-Berlin und referierte "Zur Rolle von Westpresse und Rundfunk". Er berichtete, dass DDR-Autoren im RIAS-Literaturprogramm stark vertreten waren. In der DDR unzugängliche Bücher wurden in den RIAS-Besprechungen ausgiebig zitiert, um auf diese Weise die Literatursperre zu unterlaufen. Ein Indiz für die Wirkung dieser Vorgehensweise lieferte die Vorstellung einer DDR-Ausgabe einer sowjetischen Anthologie. Kurz nach der RIAS-Sendung avancierte das Buch vom Ladenhüter zur Bückware. Insgesamt sank jedoch der Stellenwert des Radios. Dabei ist es mir wichtig, zum einen konkrete Methoden und Instrumente zu beleuchten und zum anderen – im Rahmen der von mir besuchten Seminare (sowie im Austausch mit anderen Studierenden) – ein allgemeineres Resümee zu ziehen, wie digitale Lehre für (hoffentlich) alle gelingen kann.

    Nachdem unter großem Zeitdruck ein Semester mit digitaler Lehre aus dem Boden gestampft werden musste, möchte ich aus Studierendensicht einen Blick zurück auf die vergangenen Monate März bis Juli 2020 werfen. Dabei ist es mir wichtig, zum einen konkrete Methoden und Instrumente zu beleuchten und zum anderen – im Rahmen der von mir besuchten Seminare (sowie im Austausch mit anderen Studierenden) – ein allgemeineres Resümee zu ziehen, wie digitale Lehre für (hoffentlich) alle gelingen kann.

    Read for its conventional cognitive value as mise-en-scene, the glass city of OneState in Yevgeny Zamyatin’s ‘We’ (1924) reflects the novel’s totalitarian fantasy of social uniformity and dystopian total surveillance. However, the unfolding narrative reveals a more ambiguous lens, through which the contradictions of the protagonist D–503 are magnified and brought to crisis. The glass city is simultaneously a transparent hive, apotheosis of Taylorist processes of ‘optimisation,’ and a vast prismatic crystal, focussing sublime light onto the narrator’s incipient romantic sensibility. The dual nature of glass mirrors a broader avant-garde fissure in art and architecture. For functionalists, its value consisted in neutrality, efficient transparency and the ‘hygienic’ transmission of sunlight into interiors. But for an earlier ‘activist’ tendency (particularly in Germany) its capacity for colour-shifting, lensing and refraction were spurs to a re-enchantment of the quotidian and an intensification of mystical experience. This paper explores two key elements of Zamyatin’s glass city — the prismatic geometric blocks of the city itself, and the encircling ‘green wall’ that surrounds it — considering glass rationalism and mysticism, and their relationship to utopian planning as a process of metaphysical ordering.

    The thematic focus of our conference, “Challenges of the Post-Truth Era in American Studies,” brings to the fore the important critical work of our interdisciplinary and transnational field in times of misinformation, propaganda, filter bubbles, and a lack of media literacy. Not only the United States but also across the Atlantic have political elections and their aftermaths caused turmoil in all spheres of social, cultural, and economic life. The meanings and uses of such controversial terms as “truthiness,” “fake news,” or “post-truth” (voted as words of the year by Merriam-Webster in 2006, Macquarie Dictionary Australia in 2016, and the American Dialect Society in 2017 respectively) continue to shape current discourses in the media and on social networks around information policies, propaganda, and sensationalism that highlight the historic and contemporary circumstances of democratic processes as well as its literary and cultural representations in a diachronic manner. ; pgf2019.wordpress.com

    International audience ; Inductive processes are used in many industrial processes and applied to various materials within a large frequency domain from Hz to MHz. In order to analyze the performance and to optimize inductive processes we develop a dedicated software coupling integral method and finite element method. Integral method is dedicated to model electromagnetic phenomenon and finite element method is used to model heat transfer and fluid mechanic. This software is developed for 2D and 3D configurations. In the article some results are given for various inductive processes.
