    What did Danes and Swedes in the Middle Ages imagine and write about Jews and Judaism? This book draws on over 100 medieval Danish and Swedish manuscripts and incunabula as well as runic inscriptions and religious art (c. 1200-1515) to answer this question. There were no resident Jews in Scandinavia before the modern period, yet as this book shows ideas and fantasies about them appear to have been widespread and an integral part of life and culture in the medieval North. Volume 1 investigates the possibility of encounters between Scandinavians and Jews, the terminology used to write about Jews, Judaism, and Hebrew, and how Christian writers imagined the Jewish body. The (mis)use of Jews in different texts, especially miracle tales, exempla, sermons, and Passion treaties, is examined to show how writers employed the figure of the Jew to address doubts concerning doctrine and heresy, fears of violence and mass death, and questions of emotions and sexuality. Volume 2 contains diplomatic editions of 54 texts in Old Danish and Swedish together with translations into English that make these sources available to an international audience for the first time and demonstrate how the image of the Jew was created in medieval Scandinavia.

    Der "Heliand", d.h. "Heiland", ein ca. 6000 Verse umfassendes Epos in Stabreimen, schildert unter Zugrundelegung der alten und bewährten Evangelienharmonie des Tatian (um 170) und anderer theologischer Quellen das Erdenleben Christi von seiner Geburt bis zur Himmelfahrt. Entstanden um 830/840 ist es eines der wenigen erhaltenen Werke in altsächsischer Sprache, dem Vorläufer des Niederdeutschen. Dichter und Entstehungsort sind unbekannt. Außer im Cgm 25 wurde der "Heliand" nur in einer in der British Library aufbewahrten Handschrift und in drei Fragmenten - darunter ein in der BSB befindliches (Cgm 8840) - überliefert. Die Münchener Handschrift ist älter (wohl noch im 9. Jahrhundert geschrieben), aber stärker beschädigt, z.T. fehlen ganze Blätter. Gebrauchsspuren in der Handschrift deuten auf eine Verwendung des Heliands zu Lesungen während des Kirchenjahrs hin; verschiedentlich finden sich Akzente über dem Text, vereinzelt auch Neumen (Noten ohne Notenlinien). Als "schönstes deutsches geistliches Epos des ganzen deutschen Mittelalters" (Wolfgang Stammler) vereint der "Heliand" germanische Dichtungstradition und christliche Glaubenslehre ohne gelehrte christliche Exegese. // Autor: Peter Czoik // Datum: 2016 Englische Version: The "Heliand", i.e. "Heiland" ("Saviour"), an epic of ca. 6,000 verses in alliteration, describes on the basis of the old and established gospel harmony of Tatian (ca. 170) and of other theological sources the earthly life of Christ from his Nativity to his Ascension. Created in around 830/840 it is one of the few works preserved in the Old Saxon language, the precursor of the Low German. Poet and place of origin are unknown. Apart from the Cgm 25, the "Heliand" is preserved only in one manuscript preserved in the British Library and in three fragments - including one in the BSB (Cgm 8840). The Munich manuscript is older (probably written down in the ninth century), but more damaged, in part entire sheets are missing. The text preserved is divided into "Fitten" (poetry sections), starts with the birth of John and ends with the walk of the apostles to Emmaus. Traces of use in the manuscript hint at the usage of the "Heliand" for lectures during the ecclesiastical year; on occasion there are accents above the text, sometimes also neumes (notes without lines).
