Der erste Teil dieser Studie untersucht den romantischen Rhetorikbegriff. Erläutert wird Schlegels Kenntnis und Rezeption des Kanons: Rhetorik wird von Schlegel poetisiert, verliert an konkreter Absichtlichkeit. Aber diese Romantisierung bestätigt nicht die These, Rhetorik sei um 1800 untergegangen. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit werden - im Hinblick auf die Romantik - die Gegenläufigkeiten in der Rhetorikgeschichte und die jeweils zugrundeliegenden Rhetorikbegriffe dargestellt

    Main description: In the 18th century rhetoric was ousted from its prominent status as an essential part of the educational system, thus losing ground over and against philosophy and forfeiting its significance for poetry. And yet it still proved to be indispensable. Friedrich Schlegel's engagement with rhetoric was intensive and critical. The first part of this study examines the concept of rhetoric in Romanticism. Schlegel's knowledge and reception of the canon is described, showing that in his approach rhetoric is poeticized, thus losing some of its concrete intentionality. But this Romantic view does not confirm the theory that rhetoric disappeared for good around 1800. The second part of the book looks at the divergent course taken by the history of rhetoric (with special reference to Romanticism) and discusses the different concepts underlying the conflicting departures involved

    Im 18. Jahrhundert verliert die Rhetorik ihre herausragende Stellung im Bildungssystem, ihre Kraft gegenüber der Philosophie und ihre Bedeutung für die Poesie. Und doch erweist sie sich als unverzichtbar. Friedrich Schlegel (1772-1829) setzt sich intensiv und kritisch mit der Rhetorik auseinander. Der erste Teil dieser Studie untersucht den romantischen Rhetorikbegriff. Erläutert wird Schlegels Kenntnis und Rezeption des Kanons: Rhetorik wird von Schlegel poetisiert, verliert an konkreter Absichtlichkeit. Aber diese Romantisierung bestätigt nicht die These, Rhetorik sei um 1800 untergegangen. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit werden - im Hinblick auf die Romantik - die Gegenläufigkeiten in der Rhetorikgeschichte und die jeweils zugrundeliegenden Rhetorikbegriffe dargestellt. In the 18th century rhetoric was ousted from its prominent status as an essential part of the educational system, thus losing ground over and against philosophy and forfeiting its significance for poetry. And yet it still proved to be indispensable. Friedrich Schlegel's engagement with rhetoric was intensive and critical. The first part of this study examines the concept of rhetoric in Romanticism. Schlegel's knowledge and reception of the canon is described, showing that in his approach rhetoric is poeticized, thus losing some of its concrete intentionality. But this Romantic view does not confirm the theory that rhetoric disappeared for good around 1800. The second part of the book looks at the divergent course taken by the history of rhetoric (with special reference to Romanticism) and discusses the different concepts underlying the conflicting departures involved.

Und doch erweist sie sich als unverzichtbar. Friedrich Schlegel (1772-1829) setzt sich intensiv und kritisch mit der Rhetorik auseinander. Sein romantischer Rhetorikbegriff bildet das Ende der Rhetorikgeschichten im 18. Jahrhundert. Der erste Teil dieser Studie untersucht systematisch Schlegels Vorstellungen von Rhetorik. Erläutert wird Schlegels Kenntnis und Rezeption des Kanons. Beantwortet werden Fragen nach der Bedeutung seiner 'absoluten Rhetorik' innerhalb des romantischen Theoriegebäudes, im Spiel mit romantischen Wechselbegriffen und Gedankenfiguren. Schlegels Rhetorikbegriff verläßt den rhetorischen Wirkungsrahmen: Rhetorik wird poetisiert, potenziert, verliert an konkreter Absichtlichkeit. Aber diese Romantisierung bestätigt nicht die Behauptung, Rhetorik sei um 1800 untergegangen. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit werden - im Hinblick auf die Romantik - die Gegenläufigkeiten in der Rhetorikgeschichte und die jeweils zugrundeliegenden Rhetorikbegriffe dargestellt. Die konträren Thesen 'Verfall' oder 'Weiterleben' der Rhetorik im 18. Jahrhundert betreffen unterschiedliche Aspekte des rhetorischen Phänomens. So sehr einerseits rhetorische Intentionalität aufgehoben wird, werden andererseits in der Romantik Bedingungen für eine 'rhetorische Vernunft' neu ermöglicht. Schlegels 'unbestimmte Rhetorik' steht am Anfang der Transformation der Rhetorik in die moderne Literatur sowie einer Berufung auf Rhetorizität - und also auch am Beginn der gegenwärtigen Entgrenzung des Rhetorikbegriffs

    Main description: Im 18. Jahrhundert verliert die Rhetorik ihre herausragende Stellung im Bildungssystem, ihre Kraft gegenüber der Philosophie und ihre Bedeutung für die Poesie. Und doch erweist sie sich als unverzichtbar. Friedrich Schlegel (1772-1829) setzt sich intensiv und kritisch mit der Rhetorik auseinander. Der erste Teil dieser Studie untersucht den romantischen Rhetorikbegriff. Erläutert wird Schlegels Kenntnis und Rezeption des Kanons: Rhetorik wird von Schlegel poetisiert, verliert an konkreter Absichtlichkeit. Aber diese Romantisierung bestätigt nicht die These, Rhetorik sei um 1800 untergegangen. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit werden - im Hinblick auf die Romantik - die Gegenläufigkeiten in der Rhetorikgeschichte und die jeweils zugrundeliegenden Rhetorikbegriffe dargestellt. Main description: In the 18th century rhetoric was ousted from its prominent status as an essential part of the educational system, thus losing ground over and against philosophy and forfeiting its significance for poetry. And yet it still proved to be indispensable. Friedrich Schlegel's engagement with rhetoric was intensive and critical. The first part of this study examines the concept of rhetoric in Romanticism. Schlegel's knowledge and reception of the canon is described, showing that in his approach rhetoric is poeticized, thus losing some of its concrete intentionality. But this Romantic view does not confirm the theory that rhetoric disappeared for good around 1800. The second part of the book looks at the divergent course taken by the history of rhetoric (with special reference to Romanticism) and discusses the different concepts underlying the conflicting departures involved.
