    "The book is based on eight thousand pages of former President John F. Kennedy's printed communications, including his books, innumerable speeches, addresses, press conferences, debates, and letters. The first part is dedicated to detailed interpretations of the use, function, and meaning of the many proverbs, proverbial expressions, sententious remarks, and other formulaic language. Themes include: Kennedy's concern for appropriate language and elevated style; his visionary inaugural address, which was based to a large degree on formulaic language; his frequent employment of wisdom from the Old and New Testaments; his use of folk proverbs in the call for justice, freedom, and peace; his interest in animal metaphors to reflect human behavior; and his maritime expressions as indicators of life's ebb and flow. The second part of the book provides a comprehensive index of the many passages that include sententious and proverbial references, listed in their verbal contexts. Overall this study shows that John F. Kennedy was indeed a highly gifted communicator on the national and international stage, whose effective political discourse was informed to a considerable degree by proverbial language. The title proverb of this book - "A rising tide lifts all the boats" - was one of his favorites, and might well serve as a fitting symbol of his uplifting optimism in his struggle for freedom and peace throughout the world"--

Dieser Beitrag enthält im Prinzip alle aufgefundenen Belege, was deutlich zu erkennen gibt, dass Helmut Schmidt im Vergleich zu Otto von Bismarck und Willy Brandt seine lateinischen und englischen Sprachkenntnisse weniger unter Beweis stellt. Französisch fehlt wegen seiner Unkenntnis der ehemals so bedeutenden Diplomatensprache fast völlig, während sich die beiden aussagekräftigen lateinischen Sprichwörter "Concordia domi, foris pax" und "Salus publica suprema lex" als gewichtige Leitmotive der politischen Rhetorik Schmidts erweisen. Erwartungsgemäß vertritt die moderne lingua franca des Angloamerikanischen die Mehrsprachigkeit Schmidts am deutlichsten. Zusätzlich zu englischen Zwillingsformeln und Redensarten kommt es hier in der Tat zu einer Reihe von englischen und amerikanischen Sprichwörtern, die eine erhebliche kommunikative Funktion übernehmen. Zweifelsohne hätte Schmidt deutschsprachige Äquivalente finden können, doch will er offensichtlich seine Betrachtungen zur politischen Situation in Deutschland, Europa und der Welt durch angloamerikanische Sprichwortweisheiten international untermauern. Dafür gab es vormals Latein und Französisch, doch hat nuneinmal die englische Weltsprache diese Rolle im modernen Zeitalter übernommen. The article examines the use of foreign language phraseologisms in the books of the German Old Chancellor and European politician Helmut Schmidt. Apart from few French phrases, the Latin and above all the English proverbial sayings and proverbs represent Schmidt's multilingualism. In addition to some common English binomials, he uses various English and American proverbs which have a considerable communicative function. Schmidt would have been able to find German equivalents but he obviously wants to underpin his observations on the political situation through Anglo-American sayings. Though sparsely used, the foreign language proverbs prove to be important models for a national and international policy, which is committed to a better global organization, in which all people have a right to "freedom, justice and solidarity". The two expressive Latin proverbs "Concordia domi, foris pax" and "Salus publica sup-rema lex" are important leitmotifs of Schmidt's political rhetoric.
