    Framed against Timothy Clark’s comments on the potency of ecocriticism, in this contribution I first zoom in on how cultural critique according to Rosemarie Buikema can contribute to discussions on matters of common concern. I then sketch two lines of argument that emerge from her work: firstly, the way in which art and culture can break through societal silences and, secondly, the importance of history and the past for cultural production in the present. Both issues are important where it concerns climate change and the Anthropocene. They lead to the essential question when thinking about ecocriticism: not ‘where goes cultural critique’ (the ‘quo vadis’ question), but what kind of critique is necessary?...

    From prehistoric times onwards, and echoing different iconographic codes according to the era, the representation of women is omnipresent in the history of art. Whether in religious or profane contexts, the portrayal of women, their faces or their bodies, has inspired the greatest artists throughout the world. Portrait of a Lady brings together eighty-five works by major artists around this recurring motif and its variations. Covering artistic creation from the Palaeolithic era to contemporary art, the exhibition invites the public to explore the feelings and universal representations that the female portrait inspires.0The exhibition circuit pursues five themes, entitled respectively Originally, Women in an interior, Nude, model, muse, Portraits and self-portraits and The question of gender.0For centuries, the absence of women on the art scene has meant that the history of art has been devised and constructed by men. Despite a few exceptions like Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt, represented in the exhibition, women artists remained marginal for a long time. Thus, the portrait reflects to a very large extent a male way of seeing.0The exhibition features a dialogue between the portraits produced by modern Belgian artists like James Ensor, Constant Permeke, Paul Delvaux, Léon and Gustave de Smet and Oscar Jespers, and the works of modern European artists such as Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Edgar Degas.0The video of the Brussels artist Ariane Loze and the photography by the Finnish Elina Brotherus were done at the Villa Empain. Finally, the installation "A Mile in My Shoes" invites you to slip into the shoes of sixteen women and listen to their testimonies of life. His work does not only engage in the phenomenon water per se, but also about voyages of discovery from the past, how maps were drawn and land sometimes rose as an illusion from the ocean, how water is perceived and how it is represented in visual art and science.00Text by Nancy Campbell, Scottish poet and winner of Royal Geographical Society Ness Award 2020, and American poet and 2019 Pulitzer Prize winner, Forrest Gander.00Tjibbe Hooghiemstra (Tytsjerk, 1957) had exhibitions in The Netherlands and abroad on a regular basis, from the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin and The Model in Sligo (Ireland), to various galleries and art fairs in New York, Basel, Berlin, Paris and Tokyo. His work is collected by museums and private collectors, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Teylers Museum Haarlem, Fries Museum Leeuwarden, National Collection of Contemporary Drawing, Limerick, The Model, Sligo and Museum De Buitenplaats, Eelde. 00Tjibbe Hooghiemstra lives and works in The Netherlands and Ireland.     The coffee pots, chairs, tables, bottles and chessboards by Dutch artist Klaas Gubbels are iconic. Since the early 1950s, Gubbels occupies a unique and easily recognizable position in Dutch visual art. Although Gubbels is best known for his 'super boring still lifes' as the artist himself calls them, he does not limit himself to the flat surface.     In de tijd van de gilden in de Gouden Eeuw liet men schilders hun eigen hand schilderen om hun vaardigheid te toetsen. Daarna zijn handen voor veel schilders een struikelblok gebleken; ze zijn moeilijk om te schilderen en worden in schilderijen vaak verstopt of maar helemaal weggelaten. En dat is vreemd, want handen kunnen meer vertellen dan een gezichtsuitdrukking. Dit boek is een selectie van ruim 300 handen geschilderd door Bas Peeperkorn. Bij wijze van dagboek schildert hij elke dag zijn eigen hand. Geleid door zijn stemming of de actualiteit vertelt zijn hand het verhaal van de dag. De ene dag rauw en expressief in zware streken en felle kleuren, de andere dag zacht en transparant als water. Aan dit bombardement van beelden kan iedereen zijn eigen associaties en invulling geven. Het is een overzicht maar ook een naslagwerk waarin je je hand van de dag kunt vinden. "Ik bekijk mijn handen van een afstand; ze zijn dynamisch en lijken een eigen leven te lijden; ze kunnen dingen vasthouden, wijzen, zwaaien, krabben, hameren, pellen, peuteren en aaien. Ze zijn optimistisch en melancholisch tegelijkertijd en piekeren over het verleden en toekomst. Ook moeten ze vaak gewassen worden als ze onder de verf zitten."     Kolonialisme kwam niet tot een einde na de formele onafhankelijkheid van kolonies. Ook vandaag nog zien heel wat mensen koloniale structuren en denkwijzen doorwerken. Ze verwijzen daarbij naar allerlei vormen van discriminatie, racisme, sociale ongelijkheid en ongelijke machtsverhoudingen. Zij roepen daarom ook op om samenlevingen wereldwijd te dekoloniseren. Dit volume in de reeks Historisch Denken verbindt het actuele maatschappelijke debat met recente ontwikkelingen en trendbreuken in de geschiedschrijving over postkolonialisme, (de)kolonisatie en subalterniteit (ondergeschiktheid) en geeft concrete aanzetten voor de vertaling ervan naar de klaspraktijk. Het eerste deel plaatst het dekolonisatieproces in een historisch kader en brengt op een bevattelijke manier de vernieuwende perspectieven en inzichten van invloedrijke post- en dekoloniale denkers in kaart. In het tweede deel worden deze nieuwe perspectieven vertaald naar concrete lesmodules voor het secundair onderwijs, conform de nieuwe minimumdoelen en leerplannen geschiedenis. Dekolonisering in verleden en heden is een aanrader voor geschiedenisleerkrachten en historici en al wie geïnteresseerd is in (post)koloniale geschiedenis en recente (historiografische) stromingen, perspectieven en denkwijzen binnen het postkoloniale, dekoloniale en subalterne denken.

Het fileren van Kerk en maatschappij blijkt een hoog Gents goed.     The paintings of José Heerkens are all about colour. On her canvases, she arranges precisely coordinated colours along lines and in grids. Heerkens often leaves part of the linen unpainted to ensure that the work remains "open enough to enter", as she herself says. You can almost get inside the painting by allowing your eye to "wander" through the canvas, past staggered areas of colour, the rhythm of lines, compactions in the paint layer and interruptions in the brushstroke. The paintings are translations of impressions that Heerkens gained in the surroundings of her studio, but also on her travels to Iceland, the United States, Australia, or Latvia. The spatial experiences of the magnificent landscapes are conveyed in the titles for series, such as Pilgrimage or Five Colour Walk. Colour - Free and Connected is accompanied by a publication with the same title, featuring texts by Wita Noack, director of the Mies van der Rohe Haus in Berlin, and publicist and curator Jurriaan Benschop, and designed by Irma Boom.
