"Literary Invention and the Cartographic Imagination: Early Modern to Late Modern is a wide-ranging, inter- and transdisciplinary approach grounded in the twin rigors of theory and history, which, through close readings of authors from Edmund Spenser to Olga Tokarczuk, and through considered discussions of the ideologies of walking and mapping, in performance art and cultural representation, assesses and analyses the significance of maps to literary texts, and which examines the ways in which the literary maps imaginary and real worlds. Together, the essays demonstrate convincingly the close relationship between text, map and culture"--

Provides a wide-ranging guide to current directions in literary criticismGBS_insertPreviewButtonPopup(['ISBN:9780748695294','ISBN:9780748695317']);This new and revised edition provides 14 chapters introducing new modes of 'hybrid' criticism which have emerged in the twenty-first century. The chapters provide thought-provoking overviews of critical thinking at the cutting edge. Each of the authors explains in lucid terms the various contours of their discourses while bringing these into sharp relief for the student reader through readings of canonical novels, poems, plays, films and websites. The book is organised into five areas of critical concern – The Poetics and Politics of Identity; Critical Voices: Ethical Questions; Materialities, Immaterialities, (A)materialities, Realities; Space, Place & Memory. These orientations reflect the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of critical and cultural studies, as do the themes covered within the volume: Diaspora Criticism, Gender and Transgender Criticism, Women of Color and Feminist Criticism, Chaos Theory, Complexity Theory and Criticism, Ethical Criticism, Trauma and Testimonial Criticism, Ecocriticism, Spatial Criticism, Cybercriticism, Deleuzean Criticism, Levinas and Criticism, Spectral Criticism and (A)material Criticism.New for this edition:6 new chapters addressing new approaches to criticismA revised introductionKey Features:Addresses the various 'states of criticism' at the beginning of the centuryEach chapter explores and explains aspects of the theory it addresses, provides a brief 3-4 page reading of a literary text, film text or website and concludes with questions for further consideration, an annotated bibliography and a supplementary bibliographyThe critical readings provide a teaching and study resource and demonstrate the scope of theoretical applications"

Each chapter also provides a critical ‘case study’ of a text or texts, including poetry writing guides, a Seamus Heaney poem, film adaptations of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, e-readers and kindles, First World War poetry and prose, steampunk, and Robert Macfarlane’s The Old Ways. From ‘Thing Theory’ to animal theory, multimodality to film adaptation, and from acts of reading in a digital age to the creative writing workshop, the volume reflects a radical reorientation in critical modes of thinking.Key Features:Presents cutting-edge debates presented to more advanced students in an engaging yet sophisticated wayProvides a wide range of ‘case studies’ including poetry, film, reading devices, popular fiction & non-fiction proseReflects newly emerging ways of teaching critical ideas in the classroomOpens criticism to dialogue and possibility

Modern European Criticism and Theory offers the reader a comprehensive critical overview of the widespread and profound contest of ideas within European 'theory'. The book focuses primarily on the thought of major voices in poetics, philosophy, linguistics, and psychoanalysis, as well as in literary and cultural studies from the Enlightenment to the present day. Examining how conceptions of subjectivity, identity and gender have been questioned, the more than 50 essays written by acknowledged experts in their fields critically assess the ways in which we think, see, and act in the world, as well as the ways in which we represent such thought psychologically, politically, and culturally.A further reading list accompanies each chapter.Key Features:Breadth of coverage from Descartes and Spinoza to Derrida, Lyotard and Zizek; from Phenomenology to French Feminisms and Psychoanalytic Literary Criticism.Focus on the history of modern criticism.Accessibly written.Theoretical debates are set in full historical, cultural and philosophical contexts

Modern British and Irish Criticism and Theory offers the student and general reader a comprehensive, critically informed overview of the development of literary and cultural studies from the nineteenth century to the present day. Beginning with Coleridge and Arnold, examining the contribution of cultural commentators and novelists, and considering the institutionalisation of literary criticism in the universities of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, the book addresses in detailed, accessible and rigorous essays the rise and significance of literary and cultural studies. Nearly thirty essays contribute to an understanding of the practice of literary studies presenting the reader with a perceptive series of critical interventions which, themselves, engage in the very locations from which criticism and theory have emerged.A further reading list accompanies each chapter.Key Features:Breadth of coverage from Coleridge through Virginia Woolf to Raymond Williams and Terry Eagleton; and from the 'Cambridge School' to Post-structuralism and Postcolonial theory.Focus on the history of modern criticism.Accessibly written.Theoretical debates are set in full historical, cultural and philosophical contexts

Taking Walter Benjamin's Arcades Project as its model, Dickens's City offers an exciting and original project that opens a dialogue between phenomenology, philosophy and the Dickensian representation of the city in all its forms.Julian Wolfreys suggests that in their representations of London - its streets, buildings, public institutions, domestic residences, rooms and phenomena that constitute such space - Dickens's novels and journalism can be seen as forerunners of urban and material phenomenology. While also addressing those aspects of the urban that are developed from Dickens's interpretations of other literary forms, styles and genres, Dickens's City presents in twenty-six episodes (from Bells, Bridges and Butlers via Inns and Interiors and Public Houses, the Police and the Post to Todgers and the Thames) a radical reorientation to London in the nineteenth century, the development of Dickens as a writer, and the ways in which readers today receive and perceive both.Key FeaturesMajor reassessment of Dickens's writing on the cityDual focus on methodology and the historicity of Dickensian urban consciousnessPhilosophical reflections on urban tropologies through key passages from Dickens's texts recreate the experience of Victorian LondonInventive structure offers the reader an experience of the disordered multiplicity of LondonIllustrated with 19 maps and photographs

Literary Theories: A Reader and Guide is the first reader and introductory guide in one volume. Bringing together theoretically orientated readings by leading exponents of literary theory with lucid introductions, the book offers the student reader a foundation textbook in literary theory. Divided into 12 sections covering structuralism, feminism, marxism, reader-response theory, psychoanalysis, deconstruction, post-structuralism, postmodernism, new historicism, postcolonialism, gay studies and queer theory, and cultural studies, Literary Theories introduces the reader to the most challenging and engaging aspects of critical studies in the humanities today. Each section contains several influential texts that provide discussion of theoretical positions and striking examples of close readings of various works of literature from a number of perspectives. The introductions introduce the theory in question, discuss its main currents, give cross-references to other theories, and contextualise the readings that follow. An indispensable aid to understanding theory, Literary Theoriesis a significant introduction to theoretical approaches to literature.Unique combination of an anthology of core texts and a thorough introductory guide Each of the 12 sections contains:Several key textsAn accessible 5000 word introductionTexts selected for their coverage of themes (ie questions of language, genre, the nature of reading, race and gender) and author (from Shakespeare to Virginia Woolf)Three bibliographies: an annotated bibliography introducing the reader to the arguments of influential texts in each field, a supplementary reading list and a list of works cited

Frontmatter -- Contents -- List of Illustrations and Maps -- Series Editor's Preface -- Abbreviations -- Advertisement -- Acknowledgements -- Preface -- Dickens's London -- Dickens, our Contemporary -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Index Taking Walter Benjamin's Arcades Project as its model, Dickens's City offers an exciting and original project that opens a dialogue between phenomenology, philosophy and the Dickensian representation of the city in all its forms.Julian Wolfreys suggests that in their representations of London - its streets, buildings, public institutions, domestic residences, rooms and phenomena that constitute such space - Dickens's novels and journalism can be seen as forerunners of urban and material phenomenology.

Developments in Literary Theory since 1995 -- Contributors -- Index Modern British and Irish Criticism and Theory offers the student and general reader a comprehensive, critically informed overview of the development of literary and cultural studies from the nineteenth century to the present day.

Explores Victorian writers’ erotic investment in statuesTheorises the function of the sculptural body in Victorian poetry and proseOffers thorough readings of sculpture in Victorian texts and contextsExamines a wide range of works by well-known and lesser-known writers of the period (e.g. Thomas Hardy, John Ruskin, Oscar Wilde, Walter Pater, Vernon Lee, Olive Custance, Arthur O’Shaughnessy)Extends the British focus to encompass nineteenth-century European and American writings This book argues that, in Victorian literature, desires which cannot be openly acknowledged are often buried and encrypted in the marble bodies of statues. Examining sculpture’s ubiquity in Victorian galleries and museums Pulham observes that, while touch is prohibited in these cultural locations, Victorian texts offer ‘safe’ spaces where statues may be kissed or caressed using metaphors of tactility that work at the intersections of touch and vision to permit the recovery of forbidden love

GBS_insertPreviewButtonPopup('ISBN:9780748613526);Through a series of short essays, Readings traces the consideration given to the act of close reading in literary criticism and theory over the last thirty years.Focusing on short passages from a number of critical works, including those by Barthes, Cixous, de Man, Derrida, Foucault, Kristeva, Lacan and J. Hillis Miller amongst others, the essays enact close readings of the trope of reading - its movements and performances in each of the passages in question - so as to offer a more detailed comprehension of the nature of reading, and the ways in which critical thinking has transformed our understanding of what it means to read.Readings addresses in a lively and engaging manner the varying rhythms and articulations made possible through the careful tracing of the process of critical reading which literary theory has made available."

Literary Invention and the Cartographic Imagination: Early Modern to Late Modern is a wide-ranging, inter- and transdisciplinary approach grounded in the twin rigors of theory and history, which, through close readings of authors from Edmund Spenser to Olga Tokarczuk, and through considered discussions of the ideologies of walking and mapping, in performance art and cultural representation, assesses and analyses the significance of maps to literary texts, and which examines the ways in which the literary maps imaginary and real worlds. Together, the essays demonstrate convincingly the close relationship between text, map and culture
