    With machines mediating most of our cultural practices, and innovations, obsolescence and revivals constantly transforming our relation with images and sounds, media feel more unstable than ever. But was there ever a ‘stable’ moment in media history? *Inventing Cinema* proposes to approach this question through an archaeology and epistemology of media machines. The archaeology analyses them as archives of users’ gestures, as well as of modes of perception. The epistemology reconstructs the problems that the machines’ designers and users have strived to solve, and the network of concepts they have elaborated to understand these problems. Drawing on the philosophy of technology and anthropology, *Inventing Cinema* argues that networks of gestures, problems, perception and concepts are inscribed in vision machines, from the camera obscura to the stereoscope, the Cinématographe, and digital cinema. The invention of cinema is ultimately seen as an ongoing process irreducible to a single moment in history.

    For most of the twentieth century, anthropologists understood themselves as ethnographers. The art of anthropology was the fieldwork-based description of faraway others—of how social structures secretly organized the living-together of a given society, of how a people had endowed the world surrounding them with cultural meaning. While the poetics and politics of anthropology have changed dramatically over the course of a century, the basic equation of anthropology with ethnography—as well as the definition of the human as a social and cultural being—has remained so evident that the possibility of questioning it occurred to hardly anyone. In After Ethnos Tobias Rees endeavors to decouple anthropology from ethnography—and the human from society and culture—and explores the manifold possibilities of practicing a question-based rather than an answer-based anthropology that emanates from this decoupling. What emerges from Rees's provocations is a new understanding of anthropology as a philosophically and poetically inclined, fieldwork-based investigation of what it could mean to be human when the established concepts of the human on which anthropology has been built increasingly fail us.

    "In architecture, tacit knowledge plays a substantial role in both the design process and its reception. The essays in this book explore the tacit dimension of architecture in its aesthetic, material, cultural, design-based, and reflexive understanding of what we build. Tacit knowledge, described in 1966 by Michael Polanyi as what we ‘can know but cannot tell’, often denotes knowledge that escapes quantifiable dimensions of research. Much of architecture’s knowledge resides beneath the surface, in nonverbal instruments such as drawings and models that articulate the spatial imagination of the design process.

     

    Awareness of the tacit dimension helps to understand the many facets of the spaces we inhabit, from the ideas of the architect to the more hidden assumptions of our cultures.     Wie konstituieren sich Gedichtbände – nach dem freien Vers – zu einem ästhetischen Ganzen? Anhand dreier Analysen von Gedichtbänden seit 2000 lote ich unter dem Paradigma formaler Wiederholung unabhängig von traditionellen Parametern wie Reim und Metrum Varianten der Konstituierung und Darstellung ästhetischer Ganzheit aus. So unterschiedlich die drei untersuchten AutorInnen – Ulf Stolterfoht, Oswald Egger und Monika Rinck – auch arbeiten, ihre Bücher (fachsprachen, nihilum album, Honigprotokolle) sind geprägt von formalen Gesamtkonzepten, die ich entsprechend unter den Bezeichnungen Populationen und branding, Zeit-Räume und Verortung sowie Protokollieren und Fest-schreiben zu erschliessen versuche. Trotz ihrer Unterschiedlichkeit spielt, so der methodische Leitgedanke, in allen drei Fällen das Denkmodell einer gegensätzlichen Gleichzeitigkeit von Kontinuität und Diskontinuität, das ich in Anlehnung an den evolutionstheoretischen Begriff des punctuated equilibrium herausarbeite, eine prägende Rolle. Dieses Denkmodell verbinde ich in der Folge mit den Begriffen einer kontinuierlichen Praxis des Denkens bzw. Schreibens und eines diskontinuierlichen Artefakts, deren Gegensätzlichkeit sich in der Gesamtdarstellung der jeweiligen Gedichtbände widerspiegelt. Unter dieser Voraussetzung trete ich an die Gedichtbände mit einer synchronen Methodik heran, sodass ich mich unter Ausschluss der diachronen, d.h. werkhistorischen, Perspektive auf die immanente Systematik der Bände konzentrieren kann. In der Wiederholung als Bedingung einer solchen Systematik finde ich die zeitweilige Stabilisierung einer Praxis, die ebenso Bedingung der poetischen Produktion wie Bedingung ihrer differenziellen Modifikation ist. Im Rückbezug auf das punctuated equilibrium taucht der Rhythmus des Wechselspiels zwischen der Kontinuität einer stabilen Praxis und der Diskontinuität einer Modifikation dieser Praxis als Grundmotiv auf.

    Dieses Buch setzt sich mit Robert Walsers letzter Publikation, bestehend aus 38 Prosastücken, auseinander und fragt nach dem Stellenwert, der diesen Texten innerhalb der Berner Prosa zukommt. In dieser ersten umfassenden Untersuchung zu Die Rose konzentriert sich die Autorin auf eine immanente Erschliessung der Texte – zumal das Manuskript und die Korrespondenz mit dem Rowohlt-Verlag verloren gegangen sind und das Werk in der Walser-Forschung bislang wenig beachtet worden ist. So nimmt sie Komposition, Anlage und Intention der Sammlung in den Blick, geht aber auch Fragen zu Entstehungsgeschichte und Titel nach. In einer vertieften Lektüre arbeitet sie wesentliche Aspekte einzelner Prosastücke heraus, fragt aber auch nach der Bedeutung der Texte in Walsers Œuvre. Ein Fokus liegt auf der weiblichen Figur «Edith», zeichenhaft und textranszendierend als Leserin dargestellt. Anhand dieser Figur zeigt die Autorin die Vielschichtigkeit von Walsers Schaffe

    Die vorliegende Studie beschäftigt sich mit dem Phänomen aufeinander aufbauenden Werkschaffens und den Herausforderungen, die sich daraus für das Urheberrecht stellen. Die untersuchten Lösungsansätze zeigen auf, wie das Urheberrecht diesen Herausforderungen künftig begegnen und damit insbesondere seiner wirtschaftlichen Funktion gerecht werden sollte. Als möglicher Lösungsansatz wird einerseits die extensive Auslegung vorhandener gesetzlicher Regelungen des schweizerischen Urheberrechts wie die Parodieschranke und die Zitatschranke untersucht. Andererseits werden mögliche Lösungen de lege ferenda skizziert und beurteilt. Dabei steht eine Schranke für kreative Bearbeitungen im Vordergrund; davon abgesehen wird die Einführung einer Schrankengeneralklausel und einer Schranke für nichtkommerzielle Verwendung in das schweizerische Urheberrecht untersucht.

    The year 2020 was marked by a series of rolling crises. The Australian wildfires at the start of the year were a catastrophic sign of the global climate crisis. Xi Jinping's announcement in September that the People’s Republic of China would become carbon neutral by 2060 could help alleviate the crisis, but China has to fix its coal problem first. The big story was, of course, the global COVID-19 pandemic. Appearing to originate in a Wuhan wet market, by year’s end the pandemic had claimed nearly 2 million lives worldwide, put whole countries into lockdown, and sent economies around the world tumbling into recession. China itself successfully suppressed the disease at home and recorded positive economic growth for the year — proving, at least according to the Chinese Communist Party, the 'superiority of the socialist system’. Not everyone was convinced, with persistent questions about the CCP’s initial cover up of the outbreak, and how the lack of transparency helped it become a pandemic in the first place. The China Story Yearbook 2020: Crisis surveys the multiple crises of the year of the Metal Rat, including the catastrophic mid-year floods that sparked fears about the stability of the Three Gorges Dam. It looks at how Chinese women fared through the pandemic, from the rise in domestic violence to portraits of female sacrifice on the medical front line to the trolling of a famous dancer for being childless. It also examines the downward-spiralling Sino-Australian relationship, the difficult ‘co-morbidities’ of China’s relations with the US, the end of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ in Hong Kong, the simmering border conflict with India, and the rise of pandemic-related anti-Chinese racism.     Wie sind quantifizierende Ordnungen zeitgenössischer Kunst möglich, wenn Grundsemantiken autonomer Kunst in einem Widerspruch zu quantifizierenden Messungen und Vergleichen stehen? Obwohl sich Kunst, abgesehen von Marktanalysen, der vermeintlich umfassenden Quantifizierung der Gesellschaft zu entziehen scheint, sind zahlenbasierte Verfahren entstanden, die gerade kunstspezifische Kriterien ernst nehmen wollen. Die vorliegende Studie fragt nach der inneren Logik von solchen Rankings und institutionellen Evaluationen und ihrer Rolle für Stabilität und Wandel der Kunst. Damit werden Fälle behandelt, die aus der Kunstwelt heraus als symbolischer Grenzübertritt kritisiert werden. Hinter diese Auseinandersetzungen um adäquate oder absurde Beobachtungsweisen tritt der Autor aber zurück, um für eine systematische Annäherung an plurale Vorstellungen über Kunst in der Kunst zu argumentieren. Einerseits rekonstruiert er so empirisch an einer Künstler/innenrangliste und an Erfolgsmessungen in Kunstmuseen das paradigmatische Wissen und die konkreten Beobachtungsarchitekturen als konsistente Ordnungsweisen. Andererseits entwickelt er kunstsoziologische Theorien (Becker, Bourdieu, Luhmann) weiter durch die bewertungs- und vergleichssoziologische Einsicht, nach der jede kommunizierte Ordnung eine Welt nicht einfach darstellt, sondern eine eigene Realität selektiv herstellt und potenziell in Gesellschaft zurückwirkt. Auch wenn somit jeder Ordnungsversuch unabhängig von Zahlengebrauch analytisch gleich absurd ist, kommt den Innensichten der Kunst eine zentrale Rolle in der sozialen Selbstorganisation der Künste zu. Ausgehend von umstrittenen Ordnungsversuchen zeigt die Studie, wie Kunst sich heute vermehrt selbst als soziales Phänomen beobachtet, um Navigation durch das vermeintliche Chaos zeitgenössischer Kunst zu ermöglichen.

Jahrhunderts bis zu den Literaturen nach der Postmoderne zu Beginn unseres Jahrhunderts. Sie erfasst damit einen historischen Zeit-Raum, der etwas mehr als ein gesamtes Jahrhundert einschließt, sowie zugleich eine territorialisierbare Raum-Zeit, welche eine ungeheure Mannigfaltigkeit an literarischen Entwicklungen nicht allein in den romanischen Literaturen Europas, sondern auch weiter Gebiete der außereuropäischen Welt miteinschließt.

    The Iberian chivalric romance has long been thought of as an archaic, masculine genre and its popularity as an aberration in European literary history. Chivalry, Reading, and Women’s Culture in Early Modern Spain contests this view, arguing that the surprisingly egalitarian gender politics of Spain’s most famous romance of chivalry has guaranteed it a long afterlife. Amadís de Gaula had a notorious appeal for female audiences, and the early modern authors who borrowed from it varied in their reactions to its large cast of literate female characters. Don Quixote and other works that situate women as readers carry the influence of Amadís forward into the modern novel. When early modern authors read chivalric romance, they also read gender, harnessing the female characters of the source text to a variety of political and aesthetic purposes.

    Letters were an important medium of everyday communication in the ancient Mediterranean. Soon after its emergence, the epistolary form was adopted by educated elites and transformed into a literary genre, which developed distinctive markers and was used, for instance, to give political advice, to convey philosophical ideas, or to establish and foster ties with peers. A particular type of this genre is the letter cast in verse, or epistolary poem, which merges the form and function of the letter with stylistic elements of poetry. In Greek literature, epistolary poetry is first safely attested in the fourth century AD and would enjoy a lasting presence throughout the Byzantine and early modern periods. The present volume introduces the reader to this hitherto unexplored chapter of post-classical Greek literature through an anthology of exemplary epistolary poems in the original Greek with facing English translation. This collection, which covers a broad chronological range from late antique epigrams of the Greek Anthology to the poetry of western humanists, is accompanied by exegetical commentaries on the anthologized texts and by critical essays discussing questions of genre, literary composition, and historical and social contexts of selected epistolary poems.

    The purpose and subject of this dissertation is an analysis in space-representation and perspective drawing of Roman and Campanian landscape painting to develop and reconstruct the modes of landscape recognition and spatial perception structures in the late Republic and early Empire. This aim is realized with the help of interdisciplinary methods, as the possibilities, limits and developments of perspective representation are studied on the basis of descriptive geometry, its terminology and theoretical background. Zielsetzung der Dissertationsarbeit ist es, eine erstmalige und genaue Analyse der räumlichen Darstellungsmodi und Perspektiveformen in römischen Landschaftsbildern zu erarbeiten, um ausgehend davon die Strukturen der landschaftlichen Raumerfassung und bildlichen Wiedergabe landschaftlicher Raumzusammenhänge in römischer Zeit zu rekonstruieren.

    Römische Landschaftsfresken aus drei Motivgruppen vom 1. Jh. v. Chr. bis ins 1. Jh. n. Chr. werden in einer chronologischen und ikonographischen Ordnung systematisiert und auf ihre perspektivischen Darstellungsmodi hin befragt. Aufgabe der Denkmäleranalyse ist es, vorherrschende Strukturen in den Formen perspektivischer Landschaftsdarstellung aufzufinden, um diese in den weiteren Kontext ihres mentalitätsgeschichtlichen Hintergrundes und die römische Darstellungstradition einzubetten.

    Player pianos, radio-electric circuits, gramophone records, and optical sound film—these were the cutting-edge acoustic technologies of the early twentieth century, and for many musicians and artists of the time, these devices were also the implements of a musical revolution. Instruments for New Music traces a diffuse network of cultural agents who shared the belief that a truly modern music could be attained only through a radical challenge to the technological foundations of the art. Centered in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s, the movement to create new instruments encompassed a broad spectrum of experiments, from the exploration of microtonal tunings and exotic tone colors to the ability to compose directly for automatic musical machines. This movement comprised composers, inventors, and visual artists, including Paul Hindemith, Ernst Toch, Jörg Mager, Friedrich Trautwein, László Moholy-Nagy, Walter Ruttmann, and Oskar Fischinger. Anhand dieses Filmkorpus untersucht die Studie die Bedingungen der Filmproduktion und -rezeption vor dem Hintergrund der komplexen politischen Zusammenhänge und fragt nach den Möglichkeiten der gesellschaftlichen Aktivierung. Die Autorin zeigt, wie die Filme mittels innovativer formalästhetischer Strategien die Widersprüche der existierenden Verhältnisse in ihrer unüberschaubaren Vielschichtigkeit aufdeckten und so die Reflexion der Zuschauer*innen anzuregen versuchten. Um 1900 erfreute sich diese eigenartige Form der Schaustellung unter anderem auf den Bühnen der großen Varietétheater, auf Volksfesten und bei Vereinsabenden großer Beliebtheit. Der vorliegende Band zeigt, dass Tableaux vivants als wesentlicher Bestandteil der visuellen Kultur dieser Jahre auch einen Bezugsrahmen für die Entstehung des neuen Massenmediums Film bildeten. Dabei werden diverse intermediale Konstellationen in den Blick genommen: gemeinsame Aufführungskontexte und Publikumsschichten, aber auch Filme, die bewusst auf Inszenierungsweisen der älteren Unterhaltungsform zurückgriffen. Der Band präsentiert eine Fülle an historischem Material zu Tableaux-vivants-Aufführungen um 1900 und analysiert zugleich zahlreiche Filme aus dem internationalen Kino der Attraktionen bis 1914, u.a. die magischen Trickfilme von Georges Méliès und Segundo de Chomón, frühe Filmburlesken von Pathé und Gaumont sowie Aufnahmen populärer Varieténummern.     Schon um 1900 beschrieben Besucher früher Filmvorführungen das Flackern auf der Leinwand als "Tanz der Bilder". Die Idee, dass Filme Tanz nicht nur aufzeichnen, sondern selber – über die Projektion, Kamerabewegungen oder Montage – tänzerische Bewegungseffekte freisetzen, zirkuliert seither durch Filmkritik und -theorie. Der Band untersucht die Denkfigur vom tänzerischen Film und zeichnet ihr Entstehen im Kontext der intermedialen Geschichte von früher Filmkultur und modernem Tanz zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts nach. Gezeigt wird, wie das Kino im Kontext von Tanz, Körperkultur und Gymnastik als "Bewegungskunst" modelliert wird und wie es sich – parallel zu und in Wechselwirkung mit dem modernen Tanz – als Praxis und Erfahrungsraum etabliert, an dem neue Formen der Bewegung und Wahrnehmung erprobt werden. Erarbeitet wird ein innovatives Theorie- und Analysemodell, das medienarchäologische Ansätze mit Theorien der Wahrnehmung, Bewegung und Körperlichkeit verknüpft. Dieser Zugriff erlaubt, die Geschichte des tänzerischen Films über ein breites Spektrum an Beispielen in den Blick zu nehmen: an den Tanz- und Trickszenen des frühen Kinos, wissenschaftlichen Bewegungsstudien und Zeitlupen-Aufnahmen, Tanz- und Kulturfilmen, Tanzlehrfilmen, Filmkomödien und Melodramen der 1910er Jahre bis hin zu den ‹absoluten› Experimentalfilmen der frühen 1920er Jahre. Die Zusammenschau verbindet die Analyse der Filme mit den Filmtheorien und Aufführungspraktiken der damaligen Zeit und beleuchtet zentrale Beispiele über eine Fülle bislang unbekannter Archivmaterialien. So entfaltet sich ein faszinierendes Panorama der frühen Filmkultur, das zeigt, wie eng diese im Austausch stand mit Ideen des Tänzerischen der Körper- und Tanzkultur, bildenden Kunst, Philosophie, Physiologie, Bewegungswissenschaft, Lebensreform und populären Unterhaltungskultur. Erstmals in den Blick genommen werden auch die Reaktionen moderner Tänzerinnen und Choreographen wie Isadora Duncan und Loïe Fuller, Rudolf von Laban, Mary Wigman und Gret Palucca auf den Film. Ihre Kommentare, mal polemisch gegen das Kino gewandt, mal euphorische Entwürfe einer intermedialen Bewegungskunst, eröffnen einen ganz eigenen Reflexionsraum auf das damals neue Medium. Im Zentrum ihrer Überlegungen steht die (auch tanztheoretisch relevante) Frage: Wie lässt sich Tanz verstehen, wenn er nicht mehr an den menschlichen Körper gebunden ist? Die entwickelte Theorie vom tänzerischen Film ermöglicht, diese Frage auch für aktuelle Filme – von der ‹Berliner Schule› bis hin zu Spielformen des Screen- und Videodance – zu reflektieren und zu klären, was es heißt, einen Film oder ein Video ‹tänzerisch› zu ‹erfahren›.
