In the manuscripts, the fables follow a fictional vita of the narrator, a biography that profoundly influenced the modern genre of the picaresque novel. It is translated for the first time into German here based on sound scholarship Bisher gibt es keine Bilingue, auch nicht in englischer Sprache, die Leben und Fabeln Äsops zusammen präsentiert; sie sind aber in den Handschriften zusammen überliefert. Während die Fabeln mehrfach in Übersetzung erschienen, gab es bisher die Vita, die auch als Äsop-Roman bezeichnet wird, nur in einer sehr freien DDR-Übersetzung (Slg. Dietrich). Sie ist aber von größtem Interesse, weil sie, erstmals in Steinhöwels Esopus von 1476 erschienen, einem der größten Bucherfolge der frühen Neuzeit (vergleichbar ist nur die Bibel), den neuzeitlichen pikaresken Roman stark beeinflusst hat. Die Fabeln sind ganz neu auf wissenschaftlicher Grundlage übersetzt; Holzberg ist u.a. Verfasser von "Die antike Fabel", WBG 3. Aufl. 2012, engl. Übers. Indiana UP 2002, und als Fabelforscher auch in anderen Literaturwissenschaften international bekannt. Auch für Theologen ist die Vita interessant, weil sie eine auffallende Motivähnlichkeit mit derjenigen Christi in den Evangelien hat

    A wooden statue with a large phallus, Priapus, the god of gardens, warded off thieves and, owing to his obscene appearance, prompted Greek and Latin poets to write about him again and again, more or less lewdly. This volume contains the Corpus Priaporum as well as Priapus poetry by writers like Theocritus, Horace, and Ovid. It concludes with an essay on Priapus’s reception by writers like Goethe Der Gartengott Priap, als hölzerne Statue mit übergroßem, rot bemaltem Phallus und einer Sichel in der Hand dargestellt, soll Diebe abwehren. Seine obszön wirkende Erscheinung hat immer wieder griechische und lateinische Verfasser von Gedichten dazu angeregt, mehr oder weniger anzüglich über ihn zu schreiben. Am weitesten ging dabei ein unbekannter Poet wahrscheinlich des 2. Jahrhunderts n. Chr., der in einem der Person Priaps gewidmeten, sorgfältig komponierten und intertextuell mit klassischer Poesie vernetzten Gedichtbuch den Gott die Eindringlinge in sein Reich mit der von ihm abstehenden 'Waffe' auf dreierlei Weise 'bestrafen' lässt. Der Band enthält außer diesem Corpus Priapeorum genannten Buch die Priap-Dichtungen älterer und jüngerer Dichter, darunter Theokrit, Catull, Vergil, Horaz, Tibull, Ovid, Petron und Prudentius mit Erläuterungen. Die Einführung informiert über den Priap-Kult und ordnet die Texte literaturgeschichtlich ein; ein Essay zu dem sehr reichen Fortwirken der Priap-Poesie seit der frühen Neuzeit behandelt u.a. die Rezeption durch Lessing und Goethe

Italienisch publiziert, erscheinen hier erstmals in deutscher Sprache. Sie befassen sich mit Texten von Vergil, Horaz, Ovid, den Elegikern, Martial, Ps.-Vergil, Ps.-Tibull und Ps.-Seneca. Der Schwerpunkt der Interpretationen liegt auf der Selbstreflexion, die sich in Intertextualität und impliziter Poetik äußert, linearer Lektüre von Gedichtbüchern und der Würdigung von Pseudepigraphen als literarisches Spielen anonymer Autoren, welche die Maske eines klassischen Autors aufsetzen. Niklas Holzberg, who until his retirement in 2011 was a professor of Classics at the University of Munich, of-fers a collection of twenty-three papers on Roman poetry of the Augustan age and the early imperial era. Published between 1997 and 2019 in periodicals and anthologies, fifteen of them were originally written in English or Italian and are published here in German for the first time. They discuss works by Virgil, Horace, Ovid, the elegists, Martial, Ps.-Virgil, Ps.-Tibullus and Ps.-Seneca. The interpretations of the texts focus on self-reflection as expressed by intertextuality and implicit metapoetics, sequential reading of poetry books and the recognition of pseudepigraphs as literary games played by anonymous authors impersonating classical poets.

Er interpretiert darin Texte von Schulautoren mit Blick auf die Unterrichtspraxis. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf den drei Augusteern Vergil, Horaz und Ovid, aber es werden auch jeweils exemplarisch für die Gattung Texte von Catull und Martial (Epigramm), Plinius d.J. (Brief), Caesar, Sallust, Livius und Tacitus (Historiographie) und Roman (Petron) analysiert. Die Interpretationen, die auf jüngsten Erkenntnissen der latinistischen Literaturwissenschaft fußen, sollen der Lektüre im Fach Latein neue Impulse geben. Niklas Holzberg, a professor of Classics at the University of Munich until his retirement in 2011, offers a collection of lectures he held over a period of eleven years (2008–2019) in various parts of Germany, both at schools where Latin is taught and as part of advanced training programmes for those that teach it. His interpretations of the Latin texts in question, which are all required reading at grammar school level, focus on the classroom, that is, on the practicalities of learning and teaching. The Augustan poets Virgil, Horace and Ovid take up a large part of this volume, but still leave room for other genres that are introduced and illustrated using prominent exponents of each: Catullus and Martial (epigram); Pliny the Younger (epistle); Caesar, Sallust, Livy and Tacitus (history); and Petronius (novel). The principal intention of these papers, all of which draw on the most recent research into Latin literature, is to provide new impetus to reading material in the subject of Latin in schools.

    A wooden statue with a large phallus, Priapus, the god of gardens, warded off thieves and, owing to his obscene appearance, prompted Greek and Latin poets to write about him again and again, more or less lewdly. This volume contains the Corpus Priaporum as well as Priapus poetry by writers like Theocritus, Horace, and Ovid. It concludes with an essay on Priapus's reception by writers like Goethe Der Gartengott Priap, als hölzerne Statue mit übergroßem, rot bemaltem Phallus und einer Sichel in der Hand dargestellt, soll Diebe abwehren. Seine obszön wirkende Erscheinung hat immer wieder griechische und lateinische Verfasser von Gedichten dazu angeregt, mehr oder weniger anzüglich über ihn zu schreiben. Am weitesten ging dabei ein unbekannter Poet wahrscheinlich des 2. Jahrhunderts n. Chr., der in einem der Person Priaps gewidmeten, sorgfältig komponierten und intertextuell mit klassischer Poesie vernetzten Gedichtbuch den Gott die Eindringlinge in sein Reich mit der von ihm abstehenden 'Waffe' auf dreierlei Weise 'bestrafen' lässt. Der Band enthält außer diesem Corpus Priapeorum genannten Buch die Priap-Dichtungen älterer und jüngerer Dichter, darunter Theokrit, Catull, Vergil, Horaz, Tibull, Ovid, Petron und Prudentius mit Erläuterungen. Die Einführung informiert über den Priap-Kult und ordnet die Texte literaturgeschichtlich ein; ein Essay zu dem sehr reichen Fortwirken der Priap-Poesie seit der frühen Neuzeit behandelt u.a. die Rezeption durch Lessing und Goethe

    Based on versions of the Fables by Phaedrus and Babrius, Niklas Holzberg offers us the first bilingual edition of the collection of Greek prose fables transmitted under the name of Aesop (first/second centuries CE). In the manuscripts, the fables follow a fictional vita of the narrator, a biography that profoundly influenced the modern genre of the picaresque novel. It is translated for the first time into German here based on sound scholarship. Bisher gibt es keine Bilingue, auch nicht in englischer Sprache, die Leben und Fabeln Äsops zusammen präsentiert; sie sind aber in den Handschriften zusammen überliefert. Während die Fabeln mehrfach in Übersetzung erschienen, gab es bisher die Vita, die auch als Äsop-Roman bezeichnet wird, nur in einer sehr freien DDR-Übersetzung (Slg. Dietrich). Sie ist aber von größtem Interesse, weil sie, erstmals in Steinhöwels Esopus von 1476 erschienen, einem der größten Bucherfolge der frühen Neuzeit (vergleichbar ist nur die Bibel), den neuzeitlichen pikaresken Roman stark beeinflusst hat. Die Fabeln sind ganz neu auf wissenschaftlicher Grundlage übersetzt; Holzberg ist u.a. Verfasser von "Die antike Fabel", WBG 3. Aufl. 2012, engl. Übers. Indiana UP 2002, und als Fabelforscher auch in anderen Literaturwissenschaften international bekannt. Auch für Theologen ist die Vita interessant, weil sie eine auffallende Motivähnlichkeit mit derjenigen Christi in den Evangelien hat.

    A wooden statue with a large phallus, Priapus, the god of gardens, warded off thieves and, owing to his obscene appearance, prompted Greek and Latin poets to write about him again and again, more or less lewdly. This volume contains the Corpus Priaporum as well as Priapus poetry by writers like Theocritus, Horace, and Ovid. It concludes with an essay on Priapus's reception by writers like Goethe Der Gartengott Priap, als hölzerne Statue mit übergroßem, rot bemaltem Phallus und einer Sichel in der Hand dargestellt, soll Diebe abwehren. Seine obszön wirkende Erscheinung hat immer wieder griechische und lateinische Verfasser von Gedichten dazu angeregt, mehr oder weniger anzüglich über ihn zu schreiben. Am weitesten ging dabei ein unbekannter Poet wahrscheinlich des 2. Jahrhunderts n. Chr., der in einem der Person Priaps gewidmeten, sorgfältig komponierten und intertextuell mit klassischer Poesie vernetzten Gedichtbuch den Gott die Eindringlinge in sein Reich mit der von ihm abstehenden 'Waffe' auf dreierlei Weise 'bestrafen' lässt. Der Band enthält außer diesem Corpus Priapeorum genannten Buch die Priap-Dichtungen älterer und jüngerer Dichter, darunter Theokrit, Catull, Vergil, Horaz, Tibull, Ovid, Petron und Prudentius mit Erläuterungen. Die Einführung informiert über den Priap-Kult und ordnet die Texte literaturgeschichtlich ein; ein Essay zu dem sehr reichen Fortwirken der Priap-Poesie seit der frühen Neuzeit behandelt u.a. die Rezeption durch Lessing und Goethe

Die Interpretationen, die auf jüngsten Erkenntnissen der latinistischen Literaturwissenschaft fußen, sollen der Lektüre im Fach Latein neue Impulse geben Niklas Holzberg, a professor of Classics at the University of Munich until his retirement in 2011, offers a collection of lectures he held over a period of eleven years (2008–2019) in various parts of Germany, both at schools where Latin is taught and as part of advanced training programmes for those that teach it. His interpretations of the Latin texts in question, which are all required reading at grammar school level, focus on the classroom, that is, on the practicalities of learning and teaching. The Augustan poets Virgil, Horace and Ovid take up a large part of this volume, but still leave room for other genres that are introduced and illustrated using prominent exponents of each: Catullus and Martial (epigram); Pliny the Younger (epistle); Caesar, Sallust, Livy and Tacitus (history); and Petronius (novel). The principal intention of these papers, all of which draw on the most recent research into Latin literature, is to provide new impetus to reading material in the subject of Latin in schools
