Mistroen til det bestaaende, til de inngrodde fordommene, maa lures ad bagveier ind i de firkantede hoder." skriver Alexander Kielland i et brev til Edvard Brandes i 1879. Han hadde nettopp debutert som forfatter, og så det som sin oppgave å belyse samfunnets urettferdighet, og å avdekke borgerskapets hykleri og dobbeltmoral. Novellen "En god Samvittighed" fra Nye Novelletter (1880) virkeliggjør i stor grad dette programmet, men hvordan ville disse temaene blitt behandlet litterært i dag? I anledning at litteraturfestivalen Kapittel i 2020 feirer 25 år har vi utfordret Vigdis Hjorth, Kristin Auestad Danielsen og Tiril Broch Aakre til å skrive hver sin novelle inspirert av «En god Samvittighed». Antologien viser hvilke samvittighetskvaler som kan ri oss 140 år etter Kiellands forelegg

    The poetry contest in six hundred rounds -- The six hundred round appeal. "For the monumental Poetry Competition in Six Hundred Rounds (Roppyakuban uta'awase), twelve poets each provided one hundred waka poems, fifty on seasonal topics and fifty on love, which were matched, critiqued by the participants and judged by Fujiwara no Shunzei, the premiere poet of his age. Its critical importance is heightened by the addition of a lengthy Appeal (chinjō) against Shunzei's judgements by the conservative poet and monk, Kenshō. It is one of the key texts for understanding poetic and critical practice in late twelfth century Japan, and of the conflict between conservative and innovative poets. The Competition and Appeal are presented here for the first time in complete English translation with accompanying commentary and explanatory notes by Thomas McAuley"--

It is the earliest Japanese poetic anthology in existence and thus the most important compendium of Japanese culture of the Asuka and Nara periods. Book eighteen is the sixth volume of the Man’yōshū to be published to date (following books fifteen (2009), five (2011), fourteen (2012), twenty (2013) and seventeen (2016).     "How are languages and cultures affected not only by the landscapes we live in, but also by the ways in which we make our way through them? Can railway fiction contribute to illuminating questions related to a nation’s history and identity? And what makes the stories about Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet trains different from railway literature with origins in other railway nations?

     

    Outside the country’s borders Russian and Soviet trains are likely to be associated with exotic journeys, particularly by the Trans-Siberian railway. This book explores other aspects of this vast empire’s railways. Through philological and cultural analyses, primarily of literary fiction, but also of popular cultural and documentary texts, the author demonstrates how and why the railway gradually became part of the Russian and Soviet peoples’ culture and national consciousness. She describes how metaphors and aphorisms related to trains were applied in propaganda, and subsequently became subject to linguistic play and literary deconstruction. And last, but not least this monograph shows how the railway forms a dark backdrop for literary representations of deportations, forced labour and prison camps.

     

    The book addresses specialists and students of Russian, as well as readers with a general interest in Russia, languages, literature and cultural theory." Gjennom filologiske og kulturfaglige analyser, primært av skjønnlitterære kilder, men også av populærkulturelle og dokumentariske tekster, drøfter forfatteren hvordan og hvorfor jernbanen gradvis ble en del av den russiske og sovjetiske befolkningens kultur og nasjonale bevissthet. Hun beskriver hvordan metaforer og aforismer relatert til tog ble anvendt i propaganda, og følgelig gjort til gjenstand for språklek og litterær dekonstruksjon. Og sist, men ikke minst viser denne monografien hvordan jernbanen danner et mørkt bakteppe for litterære representasjoner av deportasjoner, tvangsarbeid og fangeleirer.
