    Entanglements: Envisioning World Literature from the Global South scrutinizes current debates to bring historical and contemporary South-South entanglements to the fore and to develop a new understanding of world literature in a multipolar world of globalized modernity. The volume challenges established ideas of world literature by rethinking the concept along the notion of “entanglements”: as a field of variously criss-crossing relations of literary activity beyond the confines of literary canons, cultural containers, or national borders.The collection presents individual case studies from a variety of language traditions that focus on particular literary relationships and practices across Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe as well as new fictional, poetical, and theoretical conceptions of world literature in order to broaden our understanding of the multilateral entanglements within a widening communicative network that shape our globalized world.

Die transareal angelegte Vorlesung will versuchen, nach der (verlorenen) Einheit der Aufklärung und nach den transatlantisch verflochtenen Geschichten des 18. Jahrhunderts im Bewusstsein der Vielgestaltigkeit aufklärerischer Diskurse zwischen zwei Welten, Europa und Amerika, zu fragen. Gab es eine Aufklärung oder gab es deren viele? Mit einem deutlichen Schwerpunkt innerhalb der Romania will die Vorlesung ein Verständnis dafür wecken, auf welche Weise im "Siècle des Lumières" inter- und transkulturelle Kontakte und Beziehungen im Bereich von Literatur, Philosophie und Kultur funktionierten und wie die literarischen Räume der Aufklärung transatlantisch in Bewegung gerieten. Ziel der Vorlesung ist es, aus vergleichender Sicht monokulturelle Bilder der Aufklärung wie der entstehenden Moderne zu hinterfragen. This transareal lecture inquires into the (lost) unity of the Enlightenment and into the entangled transatlantic histories of the eighteenth century, in full awareness of the multifaceted nature of Enlightenment discourses between two worlds, Europe and America. Was there one Enlightenment or were there many? The lecture aims to scrutinize monocultural ideas of nascent modernity from a comparative perspective.

The world's literatures give us the opportunity to access the beginning and end of a life, to represent, reflect upon, and (re)stage birth, life, dying, and death. This highly mobile configuration releases a tremendous creative energy, which this volume analyzes against the backdrop of the question of the knowledge of life. Unsere eigene Geburt und unser eigener Tod entziehen sich unserem reflektierten Erleben. Die Literaturen der Welt bieten uns die Chance, Zugriff auf Anfang und Ende eines Lebens zu erhalten, Geburt, Leben, Sterben und Tod zu repräsentieren, zu reflektieren und zu (re)inszenieren. Aus dieser hochmobilen Konfiguration ergeben sich ungeheure kreative Kräfte, welche dieser Band mit Blick auf die Frage des Lebenswissens analysiert. Welche literaturgeschichtlich und ästhetisch relevanten Aspekte treten in den Geburts- und Sterbeszenen in den romanischen Literaturen der Moderne hervor? Inwieweit enthalten die Gestaltungsformen von Geburt und Sterben erzähltechnische Programmierungen, die uns nicht notwendigerweise den Schlüssel zum eigenen Leben, sicherlich aber den zum Leben der Literaturen der Welt in die Hand geben? Furchtlos sollen diese Vorlesungen das Zusammenleben von Liebe und Tod, von Leben und Lesen, das (literarische) Erleben von Geburt oder das (literarische) Überleben des eigenen Todes anhand von Texten aus der Romania des 18. bis 20. Jahrhunderts untersuchen.

    Este trabajo pretende demostrar que en la obra narrativa del escritor Tomás Carrasquilla Naranjo (1858 - 1940) hay un Wahrheitsgehalt (Benjamin, 2012), la concreción temporal de una idea, que se materializa a través de lo que aquí he denominado imagen de la religiosidad popular. Esto quiere decir que la obra del antioqueño estaría construida a la manera de un gran mosaico, en el que pese a los variados y disparejos elementos que la componen, la unión de todos produce una imagen (Bild). En dicha imagen se representa la experiencia histórica de lo moderno en los sectores populares, a partir de la unión fugaz entre los rezagos de tradiciones vetustas y las formas de vida más novedosas. Lejos de las convenciones de su época, donde la pregunta por la experiencia de lo moderno redunda en los ámbitos metropolitanos y el papel del artista, Carrasquilla se pregunta por lo que ocurre en los extensos ámbitos rurales o liminares entre lo citadino y lo rural, y sus respectivos entrecruzamientos. Los sujetos que habitan estos ámbitos, al carecer de herramientas conceptuales que les permita definir esta nueva “experiencia viviente”, esa nueva Structures and Feeling como la denomina Raymond Williams (2019); apelan a lo único que conocen, los vetustos saberes transmitidos oralmente para explicar su ahora.
