En proposant de lire côte à côte les lais de Marie de France et plusieurs lais anonymes, le présent volume voudrait faire apparaître la cohérence d’un corpus constitué sur plusieurs décennies. Choisis pour la richesse des résonances qu’ils offrent avec les lais de Marie, les cinq lais anonymes ici présentés bénéficient d’une édition et d’une traduction nouvelles.     Il "Guillaume d'Angleterre" è un romanzo in versi composto tra la fine del XII e i primi decenni del XIII secolo da un autore piccardo di nome Chrétien, probabilmente originario di Amiens, in passato identificato da una parte della critica con Chrétien de Troyes. La storia del re Guillaume e di sua moglie Gratiene, che in seguito ad un triplice avvertimento divino abbandonano gli agi della condizione regale per intraprendere un percorso costellato di peripezie e sofferenze, ricalca, all'inizio, il modello agiografico della Leggenda di sant'Eustachio. Ben diverso risulta tuttavia l'esito della vicenda, dato che il protagonista assume progressivamente le vesti di un inedito re-mercante, che si riscatta dal peccato di covoitise e riconquista la propria regalità proprio grazie all'abile investimento di quel denaro che costituiva il movente del suo stesso esilio.

    "The crusading movements provoked a vast and diverse mass of reactions in the medieval West. While Latin sources provide official versions of its preaching, organisation and events, the vernacular lyrics of the troubadours and trouvères present a secular perspective, through a cornucopia of on-the-spot responses in France, Occitania, Italy, the Iberian Peninsula, Cyprus, Syria and Greece. This book constitutes the first comprehensive, modern analysis of Old French and Occitan lyric texts relating to the crusades. It brings out their full range, from propaganda for the crusades, to criticisms of crusading and crusaders through vituperation, humour or cynicism, to their use as a pretext for political or personal wrangling.
