Its titles seeks to bring out the author's intention to explore the consequences of the paradox that goes with interpreting messages that were never meant to be heard by us, but are nevertheless widely believed to be significant to our understanding of our own historical situation: only by conscientiously measuring the distance that separates us from the Greeks may we hope to avoid the risk of conforming them to current standards and beliefs, and of throwing away in the process both the possibility to understand them and the relevance such an understanding may have to our own ideas and prejudices. Two papers on the history of classical scholarship discuss various ways in which classicists have handled this paradox

In der Zeit der Postmoderne ist die Thematisierung realer Kunst und realer Künstlergestalten in der Kunst nicht mehr wegzudenken. Künstler-Bilder vereint zehn Aufsätze, die sich mit literarischen Werken befassen, in denen der Autor sich historischen Künstlergestalten zuwendet, um sich so in ihnen zu spiegeln. Objekt der Darstellung sind Musiker, bildende Künstler und, vor allem, Dichter. Zeitlich reicht das Spektrum von Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz’ Umgang mit Goethe als verehrtem Vorbild im 18. bis zu Hanns-Josef Ortheils eigenwilliger Sicht aus dem späten 20. Jahrhunderts auf die römischen Abenteuer Goethes. Ihm treten Mörike und Mozart, Stefan Zweig und Balzac, Hodler und Pedretti, Bernhard und Freumbichler, Härtling und Hölderlin, Kühn und Schumann sowie Grass und Fontane, um nur einige zu nennen, an die Seite. Nur selten ist die historische Künstlergestalt Gegenstand der Verehrung oder der Idealisierung. Vereinnahmung, Vergegenwärtigung, Problematisierung oder gar Ironisierung waren und sind in der Auseinandersetzung mit ihr nicht weniger ergiebig. Die Vielfalt der Möglichkeiten im produktiven Umgang mit historischem Schöpfertum will der vorliegende Band aufscheinen lassen

    Reinout van den Bergh beschäftigt sich seit 2011 mit dem Fotoprojekt Eboundja. Seit 2009 leben die 30 Familien im gleichnamigen Fischerdorf in großer Unsicherheit, was ihre Zukunft angeht. Das Dorf liegt in der Mitte eines Küstenstreifens, an dem die Chinesen im Austausch gegen Kameruns Eisenerz einen Tiefwasserhafen bauen. Die Anwohner stehen der Kombination aus korrupter Regierung und größenwahnsinnigen Projektentwicklern wehrlos gegenüber. In seiner Fotoserie zeigt van den Bergh auf sehr engagierte Weise den Niedergang, aber auch die Intimität und Schönheit der kleinen Gemeinde; die Resignation, aber auch den Stolz und den Widerstand.     This book takes you on a journey exploring the histories of the country's first Polynesian discoverers, its encounters with Europeans and the subsequent settling by Westerners. Particular attention will be paid to the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman and the Dutch immigration wave of the 1950s. Through a discussion of the meeting house and meeting grounds, the relationships Maori maintain to the land will be considered. The vital role of the Treaty of Waitangi (1840) and its present-day repercussions will be looked at. Finally the role of taonga or cultural treasures embodying the ancestral identity of a Maori kin group in relation to particular lands and resources will be explained. Dit boek neemt de lezer mee op een reis langs de eerste Polynesische ontdekkers, hun ontmoetingen met de Europeanen en de daaropvolgende vestiging van Westerlingen. Bijzondere aandacht is er voor de ontdekkingsreiziger Abel Tasman en de stroom Nederlandse immigranten in de jaren '50. Aan de hand van hun ontmoetingshuizen en -plaatsen wordt de speciale relatie van de Maori met hun land geïllustreerd. De sleutelrol van het Verdrag van Waitangi (1840) met zijn hedendaagse uitwerking wordt beschouwd en tenslotte is er aandacht voor de rol van taonga, de cultuurschatten die de voorouderlijke identiteit belichamen van een Maorigeslacht in relatie tot hun land en hun middelen.

    repetition. Events never repeat themselves

    precisely. This is equally true of repetition

    in Literature and Art, where the use of

    repetition is varied and frequent. How does

    repetition work? And how can it be of use?

    Déjà Vu unravels these questions in fifteen

    chapters ranging from film remakes and

    Baudelaire to the offer of Abraham and David

    Lodge, Small World. Déjà Vu shows that

    repetition has been used worldwide through

    all times and cultures in visual arts, poetry,

    music, literature and motion pictures. Herhaling speelt een centrale rol in menselijke cultuuruitingen. Slaap - liedjes en smeekbeden, protesten en strijdkreten: van de wieg tot het graf begeleidt de herhaling de essentiële gebeurtenissen in het leven. Maar in een wereld die zelf voortdurend in beweging is, kan van zuivere herhaling geen sprake zijn. Je kunt onmogelijk tweemaal in dezelfde rivier stappen. Dat geldt ook in literatuur en kunst, waar herhaling veelvuldig wordt ingezet als artistiek middel. Daarbij is juist het verschil van essentieel belang. Maar wat is precies de aard van dat verschil? Wat ‘doet’ herhaling als kunstgreep met het werk? En hoe kan herhaling worden ingezet om gevestigde belangen en opvattingen te consolideren of juist te onder mijnen? Déjà Vu behandelt deze vragen vanuit een interdisciplinair en mondiaal perspectief en laat daarbij zien hoe het middel van de herhaling door alle tijden en alle culturen wordt toegepast in beeldende kunst, muziek, literatuur en film.

Beschrijven gerenommeerde Nederlandse onderzoekers in hoeverre het huidige Nederland daadwerkelijk een meritocratische samenleving is. Vervolgens brengen zij de maatschappelijke gevolgen van hun bevindingen in kaart. The authors investigate the reception and adaptations in the Netherlands and Flanders, the French translation and Canadian retranslation, the Hungarian translation and theatrical adaptation, and the Swedish, Russian, Polish and African reception. Met 34 vertalingen in 29 talen is Minoes van Annie M.G. Schmidt het meest vertaalde Nederlandse kinderboek. In dit boek beantwoorden de auteurs intrigerende vragen over de receptie en vertaling van deze klassieker. Hoe drong Minoes door tot de (inter)nationale canon? Waarom werd het boek een succes in Rusland en Hongarije maar niet in Zweden, Zuid-Afrika en Polen? Welke rol spelen verfilming en toneelbewerking bij het succes van het boek?     In the meeting between Northern and Southern Europe – usually considered separate worlds – language and literature are important mediators. In this volume Dutch is a starting, arrival and meeting point for essays on linguistic contrasts and literary confrontations between North and South. In het contact tussen Noord- en Zuid-Europa – vaak beschouwd als gescheiden werelden – zijn taal en literatuur belangrijke bemiddelaars. Het Nederlands is in deze bundel vertrek-, aankomst- en ontmoetingspunt voor bijdragen over talige contrasten en literaire confrontaties tussen Noord en Zuid. Onderzoekers gevestigd in het Middellandse Zeegebied analyseren onder meer culturele ontmoetingen met de Griekse oudheid (Hugo Claus en Pasolini) en Japan (Cees Nooteboom en Bashō). Ze bestuderen de identiteitsproblematiek van vrouwelijke migranten in België en Nederland in romans en verhalen van Rachida Lamrabet, Chika Unigwe, Yasmine Allas en Ellen Ombre. De cultuurbemiddelaarsfunctie van de taxichauffeurs van Abdelkader Benali en de karrenman van Hafid Bouazza komt eveneens aan bod. They force us to reflect on how the boundaries between the local and the global are determined and surpassed. Often this results in politically charged discussions about transnationality and national identity, monolingualism and multilingualism, inclusion and exclusion. The contributions to this issue of CLW demonstrate that literature can play a significant role in this debate. The authors highlight the representation of city and migration in a wide variety of novels published in Dutch, English, German, Spanish and French with a particular interest in political commitment.
