    This book investigates how cultural sameness and difference has been presented in a variety of forms and genres of childrens literature from Denmark, Germany, France, Russia, Britain, and the United States; ranging from English caricatures of the 1780s to dynamic representations of contemporary cosmopolitan childhood. The chapters address different models of presenting foreigners using examples from childrens educational prints, dramatic performances, travel narratives, comics, and picture books. Contributors illuminate the ways in which the texts negotiate the tensions between the Enlightenment ideal of internationalism and discrete national or ethnic identities cultivated since the Romantic era, providing examples of ethnocentric cultural perspectives and of cultural relativism, as well as instances where discussions of child reader agency indicate how they might participate eventually in a tolerant transnational community.

    Das Wort vom „Laboratorium Vielseitigkeit“, das Walter Benjamin 1930 auf Brecht gemünzt hat, läßt sich auf die Literatur der Weimarer Republik insgesamt beziehen. Um sie geht es in dieser Festschrift für Helga Karrenbrock: um die produktive, überaus experimentierfreudige, innovative, oft auch provisorische Vielseitigkeit dieses Laboratoriums der kulturellen, ästhetischen, literarischen Experimente. Dazu gehört auch die Kinder- und Jugendliteratur, der in diesem Blick auf die Literatur der Weimarer Republik in neun Kapiteln ein größerer Raum als gewohnt zugemessen wird – als literarisches Subsystem mit eigenen Traditionen, aber auch als integraler Bestandteil der Literatur überhaupt. Das gilt für die Avantgarde, die Gender-Diskussion, für die Darstellung von Juden und ‚Zigeunern‘ oder für das Kapitel „Anarchie und Rebellion“, für die „Liebeslehren“ wie für das Kapitel über „Literatur und Erinnerung“ – also für jenes „Laboratorium Vielseitigkeit“, das die Zeit der Weimarer Republik bis heute so faszinierend macht.

Gleichzeitig erfährt die Kinderliteraturforschung einen Aufriß ihrer komparatistischen Arbeitsfelder: der allgemeinen Kinder-literaturtheorie, der kinderliterarischen Kontakt- und Transferforschung, der vergleichenden Poetik der Kinderliteratur, der Intertextualitätsforschung, der Imagologie, der vergleichenden kinderliterarischen Gattungsforschung, der vergleichenden Geschichtsschreibung der Kinderliteratur und der vergleichenden Wissenschaftsgeschichte. Das kinderliterarische Übersetzen erfährt spezielle Aufmerksamkeit durch eine Weiterentwicklung der Theorie, die die narratologische Instanz des impliziten Übersetzers neu einführt und seine Manifestation in der Stimme des Erzählers des übersetzten Textes aufzeigt. Die Tauglichkeit dieser Weiterentwicklung tritt bei der Diskussion der spezifischen Problemen der Übersetzung von Bilder- und illustrierten Kinderbüchern ebenso zu Tage wie bei der umfangreichen Analyse der 31 vollständigen deutschsprachigen Übersetzungen von Lewis Carrolls Alice in Wonderland. Diese erste umfassende Positionsbestimmung einer kinderliterarischen Komparatistik endet in der Diskussion der Konzepte Weltliteratur für Kinder und Klassiker der Kinderliteratur.
