Personal accounts help us understand notions of self, interpersonal relations, and historical events. Chinese Autobiographical Writing contains full translations of works by fifty individuals that illuminate the history and conventions of writing about oneself in the Chinese tradition. From poetry, letters, and diaries to statements in legal proceedings, these engaging and readable works draw us into the past and provide vivid details of life as it was lived from the pre-imperial period to the nineteenth century. Some focus on a person's entire life, others on a specific moment. Some have an element of humor, others are entirely serious. Taken together, these selections offer an intimate view of how Chinese men and women, both famous and obscure, reflected on their experiences as well as their personal struggles and innermost thoughts. With an introduction and list of additional readings for each selection, this volume is ideal for undergraduate courses on Chinese history, literature, religion, and women and family. Read individually, each piece illuminates a person, place, and moment. Read in chronological order, they highlight cultural change over time by showing how people explored new ways to represent themselves in writing. The open access publication of this book was made possible by a grant from the James P. Geiss and Margaret Y. Hsu Foundation

In this book, using an interdisciplinary approach, Nino Osepashvili describes how processes of translating literature in Georgia in the early 20th century contributed to the manifestation of a national identity. By means of a combination of approaches from translation studies, the social sciences and political history, the author reveals how Georgia’s ‘border location’ between Europe and Asia influenced its literature. She examines the translation processes from both the micro and the macro perspective. Using Polysystem theory, she analyses the European context from the macro perspective and addresses the literary and political processes within Georgia from the perspective of Microsociology.

This volume responds to the current interest in computational and statistical methods to describe and analyse metre, style, and poeticity, particularly insofar as they can open up new research perspectives in literature, linguistics, and literary history. The contributions are representative of the diversity of approaches, methods, and goals of a thriving research community. Although most papers focus on written poetry, including computer-generated poetry, the volume also features analyses of spoken poetry, narrative prose, and drama. The contributions employ a variety of methods and techniques ranging from motif analysis, network analysis, machine learning, and Natural Language Processing. The volume pays particular attention to annotation, one of the most basic practices in computational stylistics. This contribution to the growing, dynamic field of digital literary studies will be useful to both students and scholars looking for an overview of current trends, relevant methods, and possible results, at a crucial moment in the development of novel approaches, when one needs to keep in mind the qualitative, hermeneutical benefit made possible by such quantitative efforts

Verdure, imperial history, and state-of-nature theory -- Verdigris and radical democracy -- Round robins and founding violence -- Circles and sovereignty -- Gravity, slavery, and political prophecy -- Unplanted to the last. "For Herman Melville, the instability of democracy held tremendous creative potential. Examining the centrality of political thought to Melville's oeuvre, Jennifer Greiman argues that Melville's densely figurative aesthetics give form to a radical reimagining of democratic foundations, relations, and ways of being--modeling how we can think democracy in political theory today. Across Melville's five decades of writing, from his early Pacific novels to his late poetry, Greiman identifies a literary formalism that is radically political and carries the project of democratic theory in new directions. Recovering Melville's readings in political philosophy and aesthetics, Greiman shows how he engaged with key problems in political theory--the paradox of foundations, the vicious circles of sovereign power, the fragility of the people--to produce a body of radical democratic art and thought. Scenes of green and growing life, circular structures, and images of a groundless world emerge as forms for understanding democracy as a collective project in flux. In Melville's experimental aesthetics, Greiman finds a significant precursor to the tradition of radical democratic theory in the US and France that emphasizes transience and creativity over the foundations and forms prized by liberalism. Such politics, she argues, are necessarily aesthetic: attuned to material and sensible distinctions, open to new forces of creativity"--

Brainstorming for adaptation -- Writing an adaptation -- Writing a translation -- Production -- Case study: adaptation, The little mermaid -- Case study: translation, The cherry orchard -- Thoughts on adaptation in other performative modes. "Writing Translations and Adaptations for the Stage is a practical guide for writing adapted works for theatrical performance. Broadway translator and dramaturg Allison Horsley and award-winning playwright and educator Jacqueline Goldfinger take readers step-by-step through the brainstorming, writing, revision, and performance processes for translations and adaptations. The book includes lectures, case studies, writing exercises, and advice from top theatre professionals on the process of creating, pitching, and producing adaptations and translations, covering a wide range of topics such as jukebox musicals, Shakespeare adaptations, plays from novels, theatre for young adults, and theatre in translation and using indigenous language. Artists who share their wisdom in this book include: Des McAnuff (Tony Award), Emily Mann (Tony Award), James Magruder (Yale School of Drama), Dominique Morisseau (Broadway Adaptor, Tony Award nominee, MacArthur Genius Fellow), Lisa Peterson (Obie Award, Lortel Award), Sarah Ruhl (Broadway Playwright, Tony Award nominee, Pulitzer Prize finalist, MacArthur Genius Fellow), and Tina Satter (Broadway Director, Obie Award, Guggenheim Fellowship). The book also features interviews with artists working both in the U.S. and internationally, as well as guest columns from artists who work in less traditional adaptive forms including cabaret, burlesque, opera, community-engaged process, and commercial theatre. Writing Translations and Adaptations for the Stage is an essential resource for students and instructors of Dramatic Writing, Playwriting, and Creative Writing courses and for aspiring playwrights"--

"All creative writers engage in forms of analysis. That is, we engage in detailed examinations of subjects and themes, of ways of approaching the writing of a single poem or an entire book of poems, of writing a novel or a screenplay. Analysis for creative writers often comes naturally and is frequent. When we reach an understanding of the types of analysis that are available to us, and the forms of analysis we employ, we have more tools at our disposal to progress a project or to find solutions to creative writing problems. Non-creative writers also engage in creative writing analysis, to discover more about a completed work of writing, to place it in the context of a culture or society, a moment in history or a particular writing genre or form or tradition. Creative Writing Analysis details the many ways in which creative writing can be examined. Whether you are a creative writer seeking to improve your work or you are simply interested in analyzing the practice and outcomes of others doing creative writing, Creative Writing Analysis offers strategies to assist you. The book also includes a wonderfully supportive Afterword by Dianne Donnelly, whose work in Creative Writing Studies has been widely recognized as a contribution to the critical study of creative writing"--

"The nine essays in this volume, written by an international interdisciplinary group of younger scholars, explore comparative dimensions of ancient Chinese and Greek literature. They illuminate the development and interrelations of two modes of thought - mythos and logos, or myth and reason - characteristic of certain ancient cultures, including these two, during the second half of the first millennium BCE. They interrogate the meaning and validity of these concepts and of the category of "wisdom literature," demonstrating that they must be understood critically and that their interrelations are extraordinarily complex and productive. In particular, they explore modes of the rationalizing appropriation of mythic discourses - commentary, edition, philosophy, history - which deconstruct their traditional authority but also secure their survival and continuing significance. Contributors Tomás Bartoletti, Gaston J. Basile, Thomas Crone, Andrew Hui, Fabio Pagani, Luke Parker, Leihua Weng, Kenneth W. Yu and Jingyi Jenny Zhao"--

Syntactic structures -- Phonology and morphology -- Discourse and pragmatics -- Psycholinguistics -- Sociolinguistics -- Corpus linguistics and NLP -- Applied linguistics. "'The Routledge Handbook of Asian Linguistics' provides a comprehensive overview of the ways in which Asian languages should be conceptualized as a whole, the distinct characteristics of each language group and the relationships and results of interactions between the languages and language families in Asia. Asia is the largest and the most populous continent on earth, and the site of many of the first civilisations. This handbook aims to provide a systematic overview of Asian languages in both theoretical and functional perspectives, optimally combining the two in intercultural settings. In other words, this handbook will provide a reference for researchers of individual Asian language or language groups against the background of the entire range of Asian languages. Not only does this handbook act as a reference to a particular language, it also connects the language to other Asian languages in the perspective of the entire Asian Continent. Cultural roles and communicative functions of language are also emphasised in this handbook as an important domain where the various Asian languages interact and shape each other. With extensive coverage of both theoretical and applied linguistic topics, The Routledge Handbook of Asian Linguistics is an indispensable resource for students and researchers working in this area"--

Introduction: The world, the region, and the uses of literature -- Milan Kundera and the transformative poetics of the novel -- Speculative explorations : Milan Kundera's essays -- Disruption and agitation in novels by Witold Gombrowicz -- Witold Gombrowicz's autobiographical provocations -- Bohumil Hrabal, literary narrative, and adaptive change -- Strategic self-stylizations : Bohumil Hrabal's autofictions and essays -- Conclusion: World literature, literacy, and new geographies. "Transformative Fictions: World Literature and Personal Change engages with current debates in world literature over the past twenty years, addressing the nature of literary influence in centers and peripheries, the formation of transnational literary and pedagogical canons, and the role of translation and regionalism in how we relate to texts from around the globe. The author, Daniel Just, argues for a supranational but sub-global perspective of regions that emphasizes practical reasons for reading and focuses on the potential of literary texts to stimulate personal transformation in readers. One of the recurring dilemmas in these debates is the issue of delimitation of world literature. The trouble with the world as a frame of reference is that no single researcher is bound to have the in-depth knowledge and linguistic skills to discuss works from all countries. In response, this book revives literary theory and recasts it for the purposes of world literature, by making a case for the continuing relevance of literature in the age of new media. With the examples of fictional and nonfictional writings by Milan Kundera, Witold Gombrowicz and Bohumil Hrabal, Just shows that regional literatures offer differing methods of activating readers and thereby prompting personal change. This book would be of general interest to anyone who wants to explore personal change through literature but is particularly indispensable for literary professionals, researchers, and postgraduate and graduate students"--
