    Englische Version: Wolfram von Eschenbach composed his medieval German epic poem Parzival, which consists of more than 24,000 lines, in the first decade of the 13th century. It tells the story of the juvenile fool Parzival who, having grown up in the seclusion of the forest, is ignorant of the world and causes much grief as he ventures out to become a knight. He arrives at the Castle of the Grail, but fails to pose the question to the sick King Fisher Anfortas about the source of his suffering—a question that would release Anfortas and make Parzival the new grail king. After a long odyssey and a religious catharsis, Parzival is able to return to Arthur's court and is marked as the new grail king. The tale, as evidenced by the manuscript tradition, enjoyed great popularity throughout the Middle Ages. This manuscript from the Bavarian State Library was produced by a single scribe who, his dialect indicates, must have lived in Bavaria. A charter from 1408 attached to the front cover and several 15th century manuscript entries in the margins of the leaves both indicate that the codex remained in Bavaria after its composition. The manuscript entered the private collection of Johann Jacob Fugger, with whose library it came to the Munich court library of the dukes of Bavaria in 1571. Wolfram von Eschenbach verfasste in der ersten Dekade des 13. Jahrhunderts sein mittelhochdeutsches Epos Parzival, das aus mehr als 24.000 Versen besteht. Es erzählt die Geschichte des jungen Parzival, der - in der Abgeschiedenheit des Waldes aufgewachsen - keinerlei Welterfahrung besitzt und mithin viel Kümmernis verursacht, als er auszieht, um ein Ritter zu werden. Er erreicht die Gralsburg, unterläßt es aber, dem gelähmten Gralskönig Anfortas die entscheidende Frage nach dem Ursprung seiner Leiden zu stellen - jene Frage, die Anfortas erlösen und Parzival zum neuen Gralskönig machen würde. Nach jahrelanger Odyssee und religiöser Katharsis kehrt Parzival auf die Gralsburg zurück, erlöst Anfortas und wird der neue Gralskönig. Die Handschriftenüberlieferung zeigt, dass sich die Geschichte im gesamten Mittelalter großer Beliebtheit erfreute. Dieses Manuskript aus der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek wurde von einem einzigen Schreiber angefertigt, der, wie sein Dialekt zeigt, in Bayern gelebt haben muss. Eine mit dem Vorderdeckel verklebte Urkunde aus dem Jahr 1408 und mehrere Randvermerke des 15. Jahrhunderts deuten darauf hin, dass der Kodex nach seiner Entstehung in Bayern blieb. Die Handschrift gelangte in die Privatsammlung von Johann Jacob Fugger. Mit dessen Bibliothek kam sie 1571 in die Münchner Hofbibliothek der Herzöge von Bayern. // Datum: 2019

    Das Epos wurde von Wolfram, der sich wahrscheinlich nach der fränkischen Stadt Eschenbach (seit 1917 Wolframs-Eschenbach) nannte, nach dem "Parzival" um 1210-1220 gedichtet. Es umfasst 13988 Reimpaarverse. Als Quelle des unvollendet wirkenden Werks diente eine "Chanson de geste", ein Epos aus dem Zyklus um Guillaume d'Orange, das die Kriege Karls des Großen und dessen Nachfolger zum Thema hat. Im Mittelpunkt steht Willehalm, Markgraf der Provence, der von den Heiden gefangen genommen worden ist. Mit Arabel, der Tochter des Sarazenenkönigs, gelingt ihm die Flucht. Arabel lässt sich taufen und wird Willehalms Frau. Die rachdürstigen Sarazenen werden in einer zweiten Schlacht bei Alischanz besiegt. Wolfram bereichert das Geschehen um tiefe menschliche Züge - auch die Heiden sind Gottes Geschöpfe. Sein Epos war im Mittelalter sehr beliebt, wie die über 70, allerdings meist nur fragmentarisch erhaltenen Handschriften zeigen. Der vorliegende Codex aus dem Umkreis Quedlinburg/Halberstadt (um 1270-1275) war mit ursprünglich 1300 Bildern "die wohl am reichsten illuminierte deutsche Handschrift des Mittelalters" (Elisabeth Klemm/Ulrich Montag). Bild und Text werden gleichwertig behandelt. Es ist die einzige Epenhandschrift mit einer eigenen, parallel neben dem Text laufenden Bildspalte. // Autor: Peter Czoik // Datum: 2016 Englische Version: The epic was composed by Wolfram, who probably called himself after the Frankonian city Eschenbach (from 1917 Wolframs-Eschenbach), after the "Percival" in ca. 1210-1220. It comprises 13,988 pairs of rhymed verses. As source of the seemingly unfinished work served a "Chanson de geste", an epic from the cycle on Guillaume d'Orange that focuses on the wars of Charlemagne and his successor. In the centre of attention is Willehalm, margrave of Provence, who is taken prisoner by the Pagans. With Arabel, the daughter of the king of Saracens, he manages to flee. Arabel is baptised and becomes Willehalm's wife. The Saracens are thirsting for revenge but are beaten in a second battle at Alischanz. Wolfram enriches the narrative with deeply human traits - even the heroes are creatures of God. His epic was very popular during the Middle Ages, as is attested by the over 70, however usually only fragmentary preserved manuscripts show. The present codex from the area Quedlinburg/Halberstadt (ca. 1270-1275) was with originally 1,300 figures "the probably most richly illuminated manuscript of the Middle Ages" (Elisabeth Klemm/Ulrich Montag).     Englische Version: Wolfram von Eschenbach composed his medieval German epic poem Parzival, which consists of more than 24,000 lines, in the first decade of the 13th century. It tells the story of the juvenile fool Parzival who, having grown up in the seclusion of the forest, is ignorant of the world and causes much grief as he ventures out to become a knight. He arrives at the Castle of the Grail, but fails to pose the question to the sick King Fisher Anfortas about the source of his suffering—a question that would release Anfortas and make Parzival the new grail king. After a long odyssey and a religious catharsis, Parzival is able to return to Arthur's court and is marked as the new grail king. The tale, according to the manuscript tradition, enjoyed great popularity throughout the Middle Ages. Only a few of the manuscripts are illuminated. This manuscript from the Bavarian State Library, written in a Gothic cursive script, is one of the few illuminated manuscripts of Parzival that are known to exist. Unfortunately, only one of the illuminations in the codex, which were to be inserted in spaces that the writer left blank, was executed. The style of painting suggests that it most likely originated in Lower Bavaria, perhaps in Landshut. The quality and richness of this very illumination gives a hint of what a splendid work of art this would have been had it been completed. Wolfram von Eschenbach verfasste in der ersten Dekade des 13. Jahrhunderts sein mittelhochdeutsches Epos Parzival, das aus mehr als 24.000 Versen besteht. Es erzählt die Geschichte des jungen Parzival, der - in der Abgeschiedenheit des Waldes aufgewachsen - keinerlei Welterfahrung besitzt und mithin viel Kümmernis verursacht, als er auszieht, um ein Ritter zu werden. Er erreicht die Gralsburg, unterläßt es aber, dem gelähmten Gralskönig Anfortas die entscheidende Frage nach dem Ursprung seiner Leiden zu stellen - jene Frage, die Anfortas erlösen und Parzival zum neuen Gralskönig machen würde. Nach jahrelanger Odyssee und religiöser Katharsis kehrt Parzival auf die Gralsburg zurück, erlöst Anfortas und wird der neue Gralskönig. Die Handschriftenüberlieferung zeigt, dass sich die Geschichte im gesamten Mittelalter großer Beliebtheit erfreute. Nur wenige der Manuskripte sind illuminiert. Diese Handschrift in gotischer Kursive aus der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek ist eines der wenigen illuminierten Exemplare des Parzival. Leider wurde nur eine der Illuminationen im Kodex ausgeführt, für die Freiraum im und neben dem Text belassen wurde. Der Malstil lässt eine Entstehung im Raum Niederbayern vermuten, möglicherweise in Landshut. Qualität und Reichtum dieser einen Illumination lassen erahnen, welch ein herausragendes Kunstwerk entstanden wäre, wenn es fertig gestellt worden wäre. // Datum: 2019
