Die erste umfassende Monographie zu Richard Beer-Hofmann (1866-1945), des neben Hofmannsthal und Schnitzler bedeutendsten Dichters der Wiener Moderne, gliedert sich in drei Teile: Teil I gibt eine Darstellung des Gesamtwerks, Teil II eine ausführliche Interpretation des »Tod Georgs«. Teil III schließlich markiert die Bezüge dieses Romans zum philosophischen Diskurs der Jahrhundertwende (Sprachkrise, Empiriokritizismus, Monismus, Gestaltpsychologie, Traumdeutung, Mythos-Theorie) und zeichnet erstmals die literarischen Zusammenhänge zwischen Beer-Hofmann und zentralen Autoren der Jahrhundertwende nach (Hofmannsthal, Schnitzler, Andrian, Bahr, George, Rilke, Borchardt). Ideelles Zentrum für Beer-Hofmanns dichterisches Selbstverständnis ist das seit Ende der 90er Jahre offen und selbstbewusst vertretene Judentum. Its three parts provide 1) an overall discussion of Beer-Hofmann's work; 2) an in-depth interpretation of his novel »Der Tod Georgs« and 3) a discussion of the links between this novel and philosophical discourse around the turn of the century (language scepticism, critical empiricism, monism, Gestalt psychology, interpretation of dreams, theories of myth), also tracing for the first time the literary connections between Beer-Hofmann and other prominent authors of the epoch (Hofmannsthal, Schnitzler, Andrian, Bahr, George, Rilke, Borchardt). Central to Beer-Hofmann's literary identity is his demonstrative and affirmative declaration of his Jewishness from the late 1890s onwards.
