In dieser Arbeit wird der Versuch unternommen, dem besonderen Weltverständnis des Dichters auf analytischem Wege nahezukommen, von der Voraussetzung ausgehend, dass jedes Kunstwerk eine eigengesetzliche Ganzheit darstellt. Im Ganzen handelt es sich um etwa fünfzig Erzählungen aus der Zeit von 1920 bis 1954, eine Auswahl, die groß genug ist, um als repräsentativ gelten zu können, gleichzeitig aber zu groß, als dass eine erschöpfende Behandlung möglich wäre.
