›p Lawrence Buell combines intellectual history and critical explication, giving equal attention to general trends and to particular works and individuals. His chapters on conversation, religious discourse, catalog rhetoric, and literary travelogue treat intensively topics that have been relatively neglected. His analyses of Ellery Channing's poetry and the use of persona in Emerson and Very are also innovative. In the final section, he offers the first systematic account of the autobiographical tradition in transcendentalist writing.›pp›

The Civil War is a poem which Abraham Cowley (1618-67) did not complete, for political and historical reasons, and of which only the first volume was published; the other two volumes have been considered irrecoverably lost since Cowley's death. Professor Pritchard recently found twocopies of the complete poem in a collection of family papers at the Hertfordshire County Record Office and here presents a corrected edition of the first and previously published book, and the text of the hitherto unpublished books two and three. The poem is a major addition to the body of Cowley's poetry; it has close and sometimes surprising connections with much of his other work. It is not only the most extended and important of his political poems but a significant addition to the genre of the political poem. It is also unique as the attempt by a poet of stature to give epic treatment to the events of the English Civil War.Professor Pritchard provides a discussion of the personal, historical, and literary contexts of the poem in the introduction, as well as of textual problems and methods, showing the way in which the poem is shaped both by contemporary history and polemics and by classical and later literary tradition

Although not one of De Mille's best works it does show his unerring assessment of the tastes of the American and Canadian reading public in the 1870s. With echoes of Wilkie Collins, Jules Verne, and other popular novelists of the period, this is a sensational melodrama full of impossible adventures, and of 'angelic heroines and villains of the deepest dye.'

This volume brings together five papers read at the University of Western Ontario in 1971 to mark the tercentenary of the publication of Paradise Regained and Samson Agonistes. It commemorates what tradition has regarded as Milton's final poetic communication. In the first essay, Arthur Barker describes Milton's progress towards his last two poems, placing his ideas and ideals within a seventeenth-century context. Closely argued, the essay relates Paradise Lost to Samson Agonistes, and both works to Milton's earlier poetry and prose. Barbara Lewalski, in a seminal essay, explores the complex ways in which the ideas of time and history contribute to Paradise Lost: to develop its thematic subtleties, advance its dramatic action, and assist in the characterization of the principal personages. The editor's essay reveals how in Samson Agonistes Milton dramatized his idea that an ethic of self-reliance must be made to join hands with a theology of dependence.' He also explores, for the first time, the proposition that Milton published Paradise: Regained and Samson Agonistes, together because he meant to say something through the juxtaposition. Irene Samuel rejects the usual reading of Paradise Regained - that it concerns an identity crisis - and proposes that its central concern is the choice of a life style. In the concluding essay, Northrop Frye contends that 'Milton intended Paradise Regained to be a Christian conquest of the Classical genre of dramatic tragedy.' He argues that both poems express the central revolutionary attitude, in social and religious contexts, that Milton held and expressed in his prose writings. The variety of approaches in this volume demonstrates the breadth of the poet's vision and advances our knowledge of Milton along very original lines

This collection of studies in Italian literature is a tribute to Professor Corrigan on her retirement from active teaching at the University of Toronto. The essays, contributed by thirteen scholars in North America and Europe, cover a range of topics that reflect Professor Corrigan's many and varied interests. This book opens with a translation of Petrarch's first eclogue and ends with a comprehensive bibliography of Dr. Corrigan's publications. The eleven intervening essays examine some of the most significant moments in Italian literature from the fourteenth to the twentieth century. The influence of the Renaissance and pastoral drama on Elizabethan England is discussed, as well as the literary achievement in Italian-English relations brought about by the translation of Addison's Cato. The works of Roberto Bracco are considered in the light of the plays of Ibsen, who in the eyes of the critics influenced the work of every Italian dramatist. Bracco is shown to be a dramatist in his own right. Other subjects treated in this Festschrift are Manzone's conception of the profound significance of the moment in the interpretation of the individual personality, Verga's mastery of style and language, and Pirandello's special techniques of transforming a short story into a play

This volume, containing a selection of the poetry and prose of Joseph Howe, presents various aspects of a fascinating man who few Canadian know as other than the 'tribune of Nova Scotia' and a political giant of colonial times. Yet Howe was also a writer, and a good one. His intuitive grasp and pragmatic skill in political affairs were combined with wide-ranging intellectual curiosity, strong moral idealism, and a lively imagination. He revealed a vigorous strength in journalism and politics, in public life in general, and in his prose. His poetry admittedly was minor and colonial — he cultivated eighteenth-century verse models and habits of diction, which made him a second-generation Romantic in attitude and tone rather than in style — and its merit, according to David Munroe, Dalhousie Review, XX, 1941, 'lies principally in the deep sincerity which is characteristic of all good verse.' However, to understand the man and his times it is essential to understand the full extent of his endeavours; hence the significance of this book. The selections in this volume were assembled after Howe's death by his ninth child, Sydenham. They include the unfinished poem 'Acadia,' various serious and sentimental poems, five essays originally written and delivered as speeches, and a moral tale entitled 'The Locksmith of Philadelphia.'
