    Learning to write in academic contexts is a challenging task faced by many students, and no less challenging is the instruction and tutoring of student writers. The most demanding paper students have to write is their thesis, which is equally an important part of their learning program as it is for graduation requirements. This new online support system aids thesis writing through a variety of tools and tutorials, guiding students through the writing process from initial idea to completed thesis. Based on an extended version of the well-established IMRD (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion) scheme, a flexible structure is provided which fits most academic and scholarly papers. Students are provided with numerous short tutorials which instruct them in choosing a topic and developing a manageable concept for their dissertation project. New tools have been created to facilitate the formulation process by integrating large discipline-specific corpora from which users can derive linguistic support through an integrated open source corpus analysis tool. The system also supports collaborative processes between writers, peers, tutors, and supervisors. The initial version will aid thesis writing in defined degree programs and facilitate communication within these disciplinary communities.

    In a joint project of the Writing Centre of the University of Constance and the Language Competence Centre of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, all students and faculty of the University of Constance were asked to participate in a survey with the European Writing Questionnaire. The EWQ is a multilingual electronic tool to study academic writing practices with a special focus on contrastive analyses of writing cultures. The parallel item construction of the questionnaire allows comparing the data of students and faculty on similar issues. The report briefly outlines the situation of student writers at the University of Constance and then gives an account of the most interesting results of the undergraduate Bachelor degree programs as well as those of the study program Law which awards a Staatsexamen degree. Results show clear differences for many variables between the three disciplinary groups into which the university is divided (Sciences, Humanities, Politics/Law/Economy). Evaluations of students and faculty converge in many ways but show marked differences in the assessment of student language and writing skills. Student data show a high increase in the positive evaluations of their own writing skills during their studies (comparisons between 2nd and 6th semester). The genre descriptions which the faculty members were asked for (all of which are documented) show a clear preference for scientific over reflective and professional genres.     Thesis Writer is a newly created online learning environment, supporting students in mastering the various organizational, cognitive, social and linguistic demands of thesis writing. Users of Thesis Writer are offered tutorials and organizational aids to anticipate, prepare, plan and write their theses. Conceptually, Thesis Writer has been designed in such a way to initiate self-governed and self-organized learning processes, coupled with peer and tutored feedback, if required. Discipline-specific support can be provided when Thesis Writer is integrated into a particular degree program. New tools have been created to support the formulation process by integrating large discipline-specific corpora from which users can derive linguistic support through an integrated IMS Corpus Work Bench. The demonstration will offer insights into the construction principles and will allow participants to try out the functionality of the main tools. So far, Thesis Writer has been tested by a limited number of individuals, but preparations for use within study programs are now under way. Languages available on Thesis Writer are English and German, but others may subsequently be added. It is hoped that Thesis Writer will help optimize one of the most demanding learning processes by guiding students through the challenging task of creating their first extended scientific or scholarly paper.

Beleuchtet werden die Rollen der einzelnen Protagonisten im Zusammenspiel von finaler und kausaler Motivation, wobei besondere Bedeutung den Motivierungslücken in der Dichtung zugemessen wird. Das Erzählen in Schemata wird vom Münchner "Oswald" transzendiert, indem die herangezogenen (bisweilen auch nur anzitierten) Schemata gegeneinander ausgespielt und neu miteinander kombiniert werden. Dies ist Zeugnis einer dynamischen Stoffkonzeption, die auch verantwortlich zeichnet für die Vielfalt an Fassungen, in denen die Geschichte Oswalds in der mhd. Epik zu greifen ist.

    Las reflexiones sobre la actividad de traducción y sus resultados han estado marcadas históricamente por el mayor o menor alejamiento respecto de la obra original. También a través del tiempo se ha intentado dar respuesta a la pregunta ¿qué es una buena traducción? con la formulación de reglas generales, es decir, prescribiendo. Afortunadamente, hacia mediados del siglo XX, comienza a sistematizarse el estudio de la actividad de traducción y se entiende la complejidad que la sustenta, ya que en ella confluyen aspectos diversos, tanto lingüísticos como cognitivos, culturales o comparativos. De allí en más, los estudios sobre la traducción abandonan la prescripción y asumen una mirada descriptiva y explicativa, que se relaciona con las normas del género discursivo que se traduce, con las normas sociales del público para el cual se traduce y con las que se establecen entre la editorial o cliente y el traductor. Desde las aparentemente ingenuas definiciones de traducción, pasando por un recorte histórico de la evolución de su estudio, este libro recorre la relación entre lingüística y traducción, discute la evolución de los conceptos de unidad de traducción y equivalencia, expone la problematización del sentido en la lexicología y la terminología, que son campos afines con la traducción, e introduce la relación entre cultura y traducción.
