Artists drawing or painting their mother has become iconic in art history - from Whistler through Freud, Cezanne, Hockney, Ingres, Gauguin or Durer, whose brutally honest portraits of his mother insisted that Even the smallest wrinkles and veins must not be ignored. Paul Graham's first major body of work since 2014's 'Does Yellow Run Forever' contains portraits of his elderly mother sitting in her chair in a retirement community in England. Graham's camera hardly moves, with his mother asleep, eyes closed, in every image. Our palette is the gentle tones of old age -a flowered blouse, a pink or lavender cardigan- the light is soft, natural and constant, from a single daylight window. With little attempt to photographically entertain us, we begin to notice subtle shifts of carefully chosen focus, from one eye to another, to a loose thread on a button, to a stray wisp of hair escaping outwards. Frozen in time, the ebbing of life is expressed through modest details, powerful emotional resonance arrives through tender observation

"Xenia" is a combination of recent and past portraits that Arian Christiaens made of her sister. Christiaens uses the act of making portraits as an attempt to communicate and understand her sister's personality. "Xenia" handles the search for identity and how people struggle with fitting in society. Next to this search for identity, Christiaens also addresses the limitations of portraiture and the inability of photography to tell the truth. What is constructed and what is real? Who is Xenia as a character and what does she express? The fear to exist, to (not) feel at ease in your own body and environment, the complexity of ones personality are themes that Christiaens deals with in a publication that floats between a photographic documentary and a (staged) story

Tegneserie - graphic novel. A wild seascape, a distant island, a full moon. Gradually the island grows nearer until we land on a primeval wilderness, rich in vegetation and huge, strange beasts. Time passes and things do not go well for the island. Civilization rises as towers of stone and metal and smoke, choking the undergrowth and the creatures who once moved through it. This is not a happy story and it will not have a happy ending

The present work is a systematic study of five frameworks or perspectives articulating mathematical structuralism, whose core idea is that mathematics is concerned primarily with interrelations in abstraction from the nature of objects. The first two, set-theoretic and category-theoretic, arose within mathematics itself. After exposing a number of problems, the book considers three further perspectives formulated by logicians and philosophers of mathematics: sui generis, treating structures as abstract universals, modal, eliminating structures as objects in favor of freely entertained logical possibilities, and finally, modal-set-theoretic, a sort of synthesis of the set-theoretic and modal perspectives

Proof is a printed visual archive composed of video screenshots from ISIS propaganda films, captured directly from the Internet. It shows how, since 2014, cultural history was physically destroyed by special units 'Kata'ib Taswiya'. Proof is a documentation of the last moments of those sculptures and monuments, during and just after their collapse and destructions. Technically the book operates like a pictorial cheque book and its pages are pre-cuted, allowing the readers to tear the pages if they want to

Stones. Why do we have the tendency to them pick up from the ground? Why do we like to throw them in water? And why do many people take them home as souvenirs? We seem to want to connect to earth this way, or perhaps even to eternity. It is precisely this connection that Claudia den Boer (NL) was looking for when she picked up stones in the Moroccan Sahara, the Tibetan highlands, around the mysterious Montserrat in Catalonia, and the mighty Georgian Caucasus. In these places, the stone and the mountain became one for her.00Once home, she went on a second journey, but this time within the landscapes of her analog negatives. By zooming in on the images she had previously made, she looked again at what she had already seen, discovering new landscapes.00In photographic studies, Den Boer examines the experience of scale, perspective and spatiality through an eclectic variety of images of mountains, rocks and stones. Time, light and distance determine the experience of something as massive as a mountain, but can the expression of a mountain also be discovered in a close-up, or even in a single stone? The diversity of her images show how changeable our view of a seemingly static object can be

This book shows how reading modernist literature gives us a fresh and necessary insight into both the tensions within the empathetic imagination and the idea of empathy itself. Writers such as Thomas Hardy, Ford Madox Ford, Mary Borden, T. S. Eliot, and Virginia Woolf encourage us to enter other perspectives even as they question the boundaries between self and other and, hence, the very possibility of empathy. Eve Sorum maintains that we must think through this complex literary heritage, focusing on the geographic and elegiac modes of the empathetic imagination, and revealing empathy as more fraught, threatening, and even uncanny than it first appears. Modernist Empathy thereby forges a theory of literary empathy as an act not of orientation, but of disorientation, thereby enriching our contemporary understanding of both modernist literature and the concept of literary empathy
