    Mit Band 6 präsentiert die Jiddistik-Reihe erstmalig eine umfangreiche Sammlung von Essays jiddischer Kulturschaffender der Zwischenkriegszeit, darunter Perets Markish, Nakhmen Meisel, Shmuel Niger, Melekh Ravitch, Fradl Shtok und Debora Vogel. Schwerpunkte sind Manifeste von Literaten und bildenden Künstlern und Diskurse zu Perspektiven moderner Autorinnen und Autoren und deren Positionierung in der Weltliteratur. Dazu gehört auch der sogenannte Sprachenkampf zwischen Hebräisch und Jiddisch als Kultur- und Nationalsprachen. Der Band umfasst ferner die Debatte um die Ausrichtung eines Literaturkongresses (1927) zur Stärkung der fragmentierten jiddischen Kulturgemeinschaft. Ein gesondertes Kapitel ist Essays der Dichterin und Erzählerin Kadya Molodowsky gewidmet, die als langjährige Herausgeberin der literarischen Zeitschrift Svive [Umfeld] eine Ausnahme bildete. Die Textedition umfasst knapp 60 jiddische Essays. Sie erscheint hebräischschriftlich, begleitet von einem Vorwort auch auf Englisch und Deutsch. Volume 6 presents a first-of-its-kind, comprehensive collection of essays by Yiddish artists and intellectuals from the interwar period, including Perets Markish, Nakhmen Mayzel, Shmuel Niger, Melekh Ravitsh, Fradl Shtok, and Debora Vogel. The focus is on manifestos by writers and artists, on the perspectives of modern authors, in particular on their positions vis à vis world literature, including their opinions regarding the so-called language war between Hebrew and Yiddish. The volume also documents the debate that accompanied the plan to organize a Yiddish literary congress in 1927, intended to strengthen the fragmented Yiddish cultural community. A separate chapter is devoted to essays by the poetess and fiction writer Kadya Molodowsky. A longtime editor of the literary periodical Svive (Surroundings), she was an exception in a field largely dominated by men.The volume contains some 60 Yiddish essays, printed in Hebrew letters, accompanied by a foreword in English and German. This first comprehensive edition of Yiddish essays presents central voices and discourses of Jewish and Yiddish artists and intellectuals of the interwar period.

Schwerpunkte sind Manifeste von Literaten und bildenden Künstlern und Diskurse zu Perspektiven moderner Autorinnen und Autoren und deren Positionierung in der Weltliteratur. Dazu gehört auch der sogenannte Sprachenkampf zwischen Hebräisch und Jiddisch als Kultur- und Nationalsprachen. Der Band umfasst ferner die Debatte um die Ausrichtung eines Literaturkongresses (1927) zur Stärkung der fragmentierten jiddischen Kulturgemeinschaft. Ein gesondertes Kapitel ist Essays der Dichterin und Erzählerin Kadya Molodowsky gewidmet, die als langjährige Herausgeberin der literarischen Zeitschrift Svive [Umfeld] eine Ausnahme bildete. Die Textedition umfasst knapp 60 jiddische Essays. Sie erscheint hebräischschriftlich, begleitet von einem Vorwort auch auf Englisch und Deutsch Volume 6 presents a first-of-its-kind, comprehensive collection of essays by Yiddish artists and intellectuals from the interwar period, including Perets Markish, Nakhmen Mayzel, Shmuel Niger, Melekh Ravitsh, Fradl Shtok, and Debora Vogel. The focus is on manifestos by writers and artists, on the perspectives of modern authors, in particular on their positions vis à vis world literature, including their opinions regarding the so-called language war between Hebrew and Yiddish. The volume also documents the debate that accompanied the plan to organize a Yiddish literary congress in 1927, intended to strengthen the fragmented Yiddish cultural community. A separate chapter is devoted to essays by the poetess and fiction writer Kadya Molodowsky. A longtime editor of the literary periodical Svive (Surroundings), she was an exception in a field largely dominated by men.The volume contains some 60 Yiddish essays, printed in Hebrew letters, accompanied by a foreword in English and German.     From the second half of the nineteenth century through to World War II, Eastern Europe, especially the territories that formerly made up the Pale of Settlement in the Tsarist Empire, witnessed a Jewish cultural flowering that went hand-in-hand with a multifaceted literary productivity in the Hebrew and Yiddish languages. Accompanied and sometimes directly affected by the dramatic political ruptures of the era, many authors experimented with various modernist poetics in the context of a culturally and literarily closely interwoven milieu. This beautifully illustrated catalogue presents for the first time some of the key figures of the era, including in each case a portrait of the author and a close reading of selected texts, including Yosef Ḥayim Brenner, Leah Goldberg, Moyshe Kulbak, and Deborah Vogel. Of particular interest here is the productive entanglement of cultures and literatures, of cultural contact and transfer, and the significance of space and place for the development of modern Jewish literatures.

    "Between the world wars, a generation of Jewish leftist poets reached out to other embattled peoples of the earth-Palestinian Arabs, African Americans, Spanish Republicans-in Yiddish verse. Songs in Dark Times examines the richly layered meanings of this project, grounded in Jewish collective trauma but embracing a global community of the oppressed. The long 1930s, Amelia M. Glaser proposes, gave rise to a genre of internationalist modernism in which tropes of national collective memory were rewritten as the shared experiences of many national groups. The utopian Jews of Songs in Dark Times effectively globalized the pogroms in a bold and sometimes fraught literary move that asserted continuity with anti-Arab violence and black lynching. As communists and fellow travelers, the writers also sought to integrate particular experiences of suffering into a borderless narrative of class struggle. Glaser resurrects their poems from the pages of forgotten Yiddish communist periodicals, particularly the New York-based Morgn Frayhayt (Morning Freedom) and the Soviet literary journal Royte Velt (Red World). Alongside compelling analysis, Glaser includes her own translations of ten poems previously unavailable in English, including Malka Lee's "God's Black Lamb," Moyshe Nadir's "Closer," and Esther Shumiatsher's "At the Border of China." These poets dreamed of a moment when "we" could mean "we workers" rather than "we Jews."     "Set in Lithuania and South Africa, the Yiddish poetry of David Fram (1903-1988) memorialises an almost-obliterated Jewish culture in the old country and its surviving offshoots in the new. Frankel's study of the most important South African Yiddish poet foregrounds insightful close analysis of his poetry, situating it in a variety of cultural-historical contexts, which include immigration and exile, memory and postmemory, and the Holocaust. A representative sample of Fram's work is presented, in transliteration and also translation, as an Appendix. By considering Fram side-by-side with other South African Yiddish poets, as well as such well-known figures as the poet Abraham Sutzkever and the artist Marc Chagall, Frankel convincingly argues for Fram's relevance in transnational modern Jewish culture."--
