Lucian's Alexander the False Prophet is the only literary testimony to a highly influential cult of the 'New Asclepios Glycon' which, as archaeological evidence continues to document, spread all over the eastern Mediterranean basin throughout the second and third centuries AD. This book offers an analysis of the complete manuscript tradition, a newly constituted text and a German translation. The extensive introduction deals with (1) the archaeological evidence, (2) the question of Lucian's historical reliability, (3) the reasons for Lucian's opposition to the oracle of Abonuteichos, (4) the institutions and the teaching of the cult at Abonuteichos. Furthermore, there is a commentary on all philological and historical questions and on those issues relevant to the history of religions. Lucian's Alexander is not one of his satirical bravuras, but a strikingly successful attempt at writing a work of contemporary history - a practical example of what the author himself has theoretically discussed in his work, How to Write History

The paucity of material, which has limited the study of Aramaic for too long, is gradually being alleviated. An ever growing body of well-edited texts is being made available to the scholarly world. These publications have provoked a number of important and penetrating linguistical and grammatical studies. Generally, however, corresponding literary studies of these texts are still lacking. The present work is an attempt to add a literary approach to the earlier analyses. The study deals with Aramaic poetry of the period between c. 100 B.C.E. and c. 600 C.E. The discussion of the textual material is organized in a number of levels, one superimposed upon the other. The basis is formed by a close exegetical and literary reading of the poems to elucidate essential elements of content, style and form. Particular attention is paid to structure and composi tion as a function of the content of the poems, and to the use made by the poets of stylistic devices as structural elements

In diesem Band werden zum ersten Mal die Ansichten von 12 Forschern zum Œuvre der Berliner Autorin Monika Maron (1941) zusammengebracht. Die Beiträge entstanden im Rahmen eines internationalen Symposiums anlässlich des 60. Geburtstages der Autorin, das Ende März 2001 an der Universität Gent stattgefunden hat. Junge wie etablierte Wissenschaftler haben Einzelanalysen und Übersichtsartikel verfasst, die zusammen das gesamte Œuvre von Flugasche bis Pawels Briefe umspannen und zugleich einen Ausblick auf die Zukunft ermöglichen. Die gemeinsame ‘dialogische’ Ausrichtung der präsentierten Einblicke äußert sich darin, dass jeweils mit eigener Akzentsetzung die Grenzen des Textes nach außen hin überschritten werden. Dabei werden nicht nur die vielfältigen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Text und Zeit, sondern auch die bisher viel weniger thematisierte Bedeutung anderer Texte sowie die diversen Arten der Rezeption untersucht. Methodologisch reichen die Ansätze von der traditionellen Hermeneutik über historische Fragestellungen, Diskursanalyse und Rezeptionstheorie bis hin zu Überlegungen zur Ethik der Ästhetik. Eine umfangreiche Bibliographie, in der eine möglichst umfassende Übersicht über Verbreitung und Rezeption von Marons Werken geboten wird, schließt den Band ab. Monika Maron in Perspective dokumentiert so, in den Beiträgen wie in der Bibliographie, den heutigen Stand der Forschung und liefert zudem zahlreiche Impulse zu einer weiteren Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk

The first volume of Benjamin Studies publishes the keynote lectures of the first Congress of the International Walter Benjamin Association, which took place in Amsterdam, July 1997. Its title bears witness to the most central concepts of Benjamin’s philosophy of culture. Strongly influenced as he was by Kant, Benjamin never lost his inclination to analyse the components of reality as fashioned by ourselves. Because he was also a materialist, for him the modes of fashioning were shaped in turn by the times and places we occupy in history. As a consequence, Benjamin’s theory assigns a pivotal role in the interaction between the world and its inhabitants to the media: language with its plethora of discourses, the arts, and the whole technology of reproduction. The historical and social development of the media is, translated, according to him, into our instruments of perception, and this perception constructs the elements of the world, the knowledge of this construction and the knowledge of the constructor. The self-knowledge of the constructor is what we call ‘experience’. Within this broad epistemological framework, the diversity and complexity of Benjamin’s project acquires a fundamental coherence and is therefore able to accommodate the temporal volatility of the phenomena of our world. It’s not surprising, therefore, that Perception andamp; Experience offers the most stimulating variety of topics, and that the keynote lectures reflect merely an intensification of interest in certain areas within a much larger field of investigation. The texts presented here pinpoint the central preoccupations of today’s debates amongst Benjamin scholars, preoccupations which are themselves responses to our own historical imperatives

Bacchylides, a contemporary of Pindar, was one of the nine \'classical\' lyric poets whose songs were collected, edited and studied by the scholars of Alexandria.     Biographical note: Ioannis Vassis is Assistant Professor in the Division of Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology at the University of Crete, Rethymno. Biographical note: Ioannis Vassis ist Assistenz-Professor am Fachbereich Byzantinistik und Neugriechische Philologie der Universität Kreta, Rethymno. Die Theologie in tausend Versen des Leon Magistros Choirosphaktes, eines hervorragenden byzantinischen Diplomaten des 10. Jahrhunderts, ist ein philosophisch-theologisches Lehrgedicht, das an einen jungen Kaiser (Konstantinos VII. Porphyrogennetos?) gerichtet ist. Das Hauptziel der vorliegenden Ausgabe liegt in der sprachlichen Erschließung des in einer einzigen Handschrift (Vat. gr. 1257) nicht besonders vorteilhaft überlieferten Textes, der bis in unsere Tage verborgen geblieben ist und nun erst rund zehn Jahrhunderte nach seiner Entstehung zum ersten Mal in einer vollständigen Form gedruckt vorliegt. Das Gedicht wird von einer Übersetzung begleitet, die in erster Linie dazu dienen soll, die Wege zum Verständnis des an sich schwierigen und an manchen Stellen obskuren Textes zu ebnen. Den gleichen Zweck verfolgt auch der Kommentar. Vier Indizes runden die Ausgabe ab. The Theology in a Thousand Verses, written by Leon Magistros Choirosphaktes, an outstanding tenth-century Byzantine diplomat, is a philosophical and theological didactic poem addressed to a young emperor (perhaps Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus). The main objective of the present edition is to provide a linguistically accessible text. Handed down in a single manuscript (Vat. gr. 1257) under inauspicious conditions, the poem had been hidden away to this day and is printed here in its entirety for the first time since its creation some ten centuries ago. It is accompanied in this book by a translation and a commentary intended primarily to clarify the inherently difficult and sometimes obscure text. The volume also includes four indexes.

    Zum ersten Mal wird der Briefwechsel Fontanes mit dem Kunsthistoriker und Herausgeber des "Deutschen Kunstblattes" Friedrich Eggers veröffentlicht. Er führt den Leser in das bewegte literarische Leben in Berlin Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts und gibt eine Fülle neuer Aufschlüsse über die Welt Fontanes, über die Personen, mit denen er zu tun hatte, und rückt mit Friedrich Eggers einen Mann ins Blickfeld, der bislang kaum Beachtung gefunden hat. Eggers, der das literarischer Vereinsleben prägte, spielte in den fünfziger Jahren für Fontanes literarischen und beruflichen Werdegang eine wichtige Rolle. Fontane hat Eggers zeitlebens skeptisch gegenüber gestanden, aber gleichzeitig von seiner Hilfs- und Aufopferungsbereitschaft profitiert Für die Kommentierung konnte der umfangreiche Nachlaß von Friedrich Eggers erstmalig intensiv genutzt werden, so daß die Edition Informationen bietet, die weit über die Beziehung der beiden Briefschreiber hinausweisen.

    My book deals for the first time comprehensively with the techniques (and methodologies) of socio-cultural research in pre-modern societies. Contrary to prevailing opinion, it holds that some form of empirical research in these domains must have been present in all human groups, and every type of society, otherwise they would not have been able to adapt to other groups and to their own Internal changes. I distinguish between three basic research techniques: (1) travel, (2) the survey, and (3) the collection and interpretation of material objects..

     

    Chapters I-III follow the development of these techniques from primitive societies via the early civilizations (exemplified by the Ancient near East, Egypt, Israel and the Greco-Roman world) and the Middle Ages to Early Modern Western Society. The mainstay of the book is the period from late humanism to the "scientific revolution" (circa 1570-1660),when all the techniques were refined and two of them (travel and collecting) were methodized. In that period also the age-old barriers against the accumulation of the research results and thus the development of socio-cultural sciences, namely secrecy and topicality, began to break down. I hold that all this contributed decisively to the hegemony of the west over all other World civilizations.

     

    Chapters IV-VIII deal with some special problems of the following period from the "scientific revolution" to the onset of Modernity (circa 1660-1800). They are closely interconnected and add some significant and lively details to the generalizations of chapters I-III. Mein Buch behandelt zum erstenmal zusammenfassend die Techniken (und Methodologien) der Sozial- und Kulturforschung vormoderner gesellschaften. Im Unterschied zur vorherrschenden meinung geht es davon aus, dass es irgendeine Form empirischer Forschung auf diesen gebieten in allen menschlichen Gruppen und Gesellschaftsformen gegeben haben muss, da diese sich ansonsten nicht an andere gruppen sowie an die eigenen inneren Wandlungen hätten anpassen können. Ich unterscheide drei grundlegende Forschungstechniken: (1 ) das reisen, (2) die Umfrage und (3) das Sammeln und Interpretieren konkreter Objekte.

     

    Kapitel I-III folgen der Entwicklung dieser Techniken von den archaischen Gesellschaften über die frühen Hochkulturen (exemplifiziert durch den Alten Orient, Ägypten, Israel und die griechisch-römische Welt) und das Mittelalter bis zum Europa der Frühen Neuzeit. Das Zentrum des Buches bildet die Periode vom Späthumanismus bis wir "wissenschaftlichen revolution" (ca. 1570-1660), als alle drei Techniken verfeinert und zwei von ihnen, das Reisen und das Sammeln, zu formalen Kunstlehren wurden. In dieser Periode begannen auch die traditionellen Hemmnisse der Akkumulation der Resultate empirischer Sozial- und Kulturforschung und damit der Herausbildung der Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften, nämlich die Geheimhaltung und der Aktualismus, nachzugeben. Dies hat meiner Ansicht nach wesentlich zur Vorherrschaft des Westens über die anderen Weltkulturen beigetragen.

     

    Kapitel IV-VIII behandeln Einzelprobleme der darauffolgenden Periode von der "wissenschaftlichen Revolution" bis zur Epochenschwelle der Moderne (ca. 1660-1800). Sie hängen untereinander eng zusammen und fügen den Allgemeinaussagen der Kapitel I-III signifikante und lebensnahe Details hinzu.

    The hitherto unpublished collection of South Slavic folk tales in German translation in the legacy of Friedrich Salomo Krauss (1859-1938), jewish-croatian ethnography, writer and sexologist, in Los Angeles, is on the one hand based on field-work materials, collected from oral sources during a research excursion in 1884-5 in Bosnia, Hercegovina and Dalmatia, on the other on translations of stories published in South Slavic journals of folklore and collections of oral narrations round the turn of the century of 1900. The translations are done in a literary style and the partly extended commentaries by Krauss are an important document of Viennese culture history and mentality in the first decades of the 20th century. Moreover, this collection documents the different ideological presuppositions for the starting phase of the emergence of Austrian Volkskunde/ethnography, which was from the very beginning internationally orientated, in close and specific connection to the folk culture of the countries in South Eastern Europe, and cultivated in a multidisciplinary way cross-contacts to ethnology, anthropology, psychology and jurisprudence. Bei der bislang unveröffentlichten Sammlung von südslavischen Erzählungen in deutscher Übersetzung aus dem Nachlass des jüdisch-kroatischen Volkskundlers, Literaten und Sexualforschers Friedrich Salomo Krauss (1859-1938) handelt es sich z. T. um authentisches Material, das Krauss während seiner Forschungsreise 1884-85 in Bosnien, der Herzegowina und Dalmatien aufgenommen hat, z. T. um Übersetzungen aus südslavischen Folklore-Zeitschriften und Erzählsammlungen vor und um die Jahrhundertwende; die literarisch getönten Übersetzungen und die teilweise ausführlichen Kommentare von Krauss sind ein Kultur- und Zeitdokument der Wiener Geistesgeschichte in den ersten Jahrzehnten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Darüber hinaus dokumentiert diese Sammlung die unterschiedlichen ideologischen Voraussetzungen für die Anfangsstadien der Entwicklung der österreichischen Volkskunde, die von Anfang an international ausgerichtet war, in besonderer Beziehung zu den Völkern Südosteuropas gestanden hat und Querverbindungen zu anderen Wissenschaftszweigen wie Ethnologie und Anthropologie, Psychologie und Rechtswissenschaft pflegte.

    The concepts of art history were developed in the nineteenth century. This can inhibit dialogue with neighbouring disciplines. The concept “medium”, which belongs to the late twentieth century, can provide assistance and connect the argument of art history to the contemporary state of consciousness at least in the cultural sciences dealing with communication. At the centre of the book lie questions of the use and effect of objects. Dealing with a series of high-ranking art works, an observational method is practised that is both historically founded and compatible with modern discourses. The six case studies address the Naumburg Stifterfiguren, Pietro Lorenzetti’s frescos in Assisi, the Parament of Narbonne, the tomb of Archbishop Chichele in Canterbury, Raphael’s Sistine Madonna in Dresden, and the self-portraits of Anton Pilgram in St Stephen’s Church in Vienna. Die Konzepte der Kunstgeschichte sind im 19. Jahrhundert entwickelt worden. Das erschwert den Dialog mit vielen Nachbardisziplinen. Das Konzept "Medium", das dem ausgehenden 20. Jahrhundert angehört, soll dem abhelfen und das Argument der Kunstgeschichte mit dem gegenwärtigen Bewusstseinsstand mindestens in denjenigen Kulturwissenschaften verknüpfen, die sich mit Kommunikation befassen. Im Mittelpunkt des Buches stehen die Fragen nach Gebrauch und Wirkung der Objekte. Eingeübt wird eine Betrachtungsweise von hochrangigen Kunstwerken, die sowohl historisch fundiert als auch modernen Diskursen kompatibel ist. Die sechs Fallstudien befassen sich mit den Naumburger Stifterfiguren, Pietro Lorenzettis Fresken in Assisi, dem Parament von Narbonne, dem Grabmal des Erzbischofs Chichele in Canterbury, Raphaels Sixtinischer Madonna in Dresden, und den Selbstbildnissen Anton Pilgrams in der Wiener Stephankirche.

Die Autorin analysiert diese Praktiken der Fremdsetzung, die sich von der alltäglichen Etikettierung und Stigmatisierung bis hin zu wissenschaftlichen Praktiken des »Othering« erstrecken: Rekonstruiert werden sowohl Simmels »Händler«, Parks »Mulatte«, Schütz' »Emigrant«, Meads »signifikanter/verallgemeinerter Andere« als auch ethnografische Praktiken der »Ver-Anderung« des Fremden. Dabei wird der Blick immer wieder von den vertrauten Bildern des Fremden hin zu ihren subtilen Herstellungsprozessen und Resonanzen gelenkt, was es möglich macht, von den Konstruktionen des Fremden auf die Konstruktionen des Eigenen zurückzuschließen.

Diese weit verbreitete Stereotype beruht überwiegend auf »Bildern aus zweiter Hand«. Im Unterschied dazu rückt die Publikation von Margret Spohn die türkischen Männer der ersten Migrantengeneration explizit in den Mittelpunkt der Analysen, wo sie als »Experten ihrer eigenen Geschichte« ausführlich selbst zu Wort kommen. Das feine Geflecht der hier erzählten und sensibel interpretierten Lebensgeschichten gibt Raum für die Reflexionen der Befragten über ihr Verhältnis zu den eigenen Eltern, zur Ehefrau, zu den Kindern und zu ihrem Leben in »zwei Heimaten«. Damit liefert die Arbeit einen Schlüssel zu einem besseren Verständnis der Männer dieser Migrantengeneration, die vor fast einem halben Jahrhundert das Wagnis auf sich genommen haben, sich und ihren Familien in einem fremden Land eine Zukunft aufzubauen.

    At the center of most of the contributions to the synonym was the paradigmatic relations between lexems, as I will show in a detailed research overview. Despite the abundant literature on this subject, little attention has been paid to questions of the nature, nature and functions of synonymous relationships in the text. The present work should therefore make it clear that only the analysis of the syntagmatic relations, for which I will use the terms "synonymy" and "synonymic" in contrast to the paradigmatic synonymy, will provide important insights into the contextual meaning constitution and the semantic structure of texts. Im Mittelpunkt der meisten Beiträge zur Synonymik standen bisher die paradigmatischen Relationen zwischen Lexemen, wie ich in einem ausführlichen Forschungsüberblick zeigen werde. Trotz der reichhaltigen Literatur zu diesem Thema ist den Fragen nach Wesen, Beschaffenheit und Funktionen der synonymischen Beziehungen im Text bisher kaum Beachtung geschenkt worden. Die vorliegende Arbeit soll deshalb deutlich machen, daß erst die Analyse der syntagmatischcn Beziehungen, für die ich im Unterschied zur paradigmatischen Synonymie die Bezeichnungen "Synonymität" und "synonymisch" verwenden werde, wichtige Erkenntnisse über die kontextuelle Bedeutungskonstitution und die semantische Struktur von Texten liefert.
