READING CAREY IN POST-POSTMODERN TIMES -- BIBLIOGRAPHY -- INDEX. Peter Carey is one of the most richly awarded and critically acclaimed novelists of the present day. Most of his fictions relate to questions of Australian history and identity. Rewriting History argues that taken together Carey’s novels make up a fictional biography of Australia. The reading proposed here considers both key events in the life of the subject of Carey’s biography (such as the exploration of the interior of the continent, the dispossession of the Aborigines, the convict experience, the process of Australia’s coming of age as a postcolonial country) as well as its identity. Rewriting History demonstrates how Carey exposes the lies and deceptions that make up the traditional representations of Australian history and supplants them with a new national story – one that because of its fictional status is not bound to the rigidities of traditional historical discourse. At a time of momentous cultural change, when Australia is being transformed from a “New Britannia in another world” to a nation not merely in, but actually of the Asia-Pacific region, Carey’s fiction, this book argues, calls for the construction of a postcolonial national identity that acknowledges the wrongs of the past and gives Australians a sense of cultural orientation between their British past and their multicultural present

This thesis discusses the early photographic work of American artists Stephen Shore and William Eggleston, with special emphasis on the representation of the 'everyday' in their oeuvres. First of all, an overview over their photographic work is given and they are placed in context of documentary, landscape and art photography. Further, their role in helping color photography to becoming an accepted medium in the art world is discussed, as they are both considered two of the most important color photography pioneers of the 20th century. In the following part of the thesis, several relevant aspects of the 'everyday', such as Marc Aug's non-places or J.B. Jackson's studies of the vernacular landscape, are presented. A detailed image analysis forms the concluding part of the thesis. There, special emphasis is put on previously discussed concepts of the 'everyday'. As a result, dominant motifs of the banal and mundane can be identified in their works, but it becomes apparent that, for the most part, it does not meet the requirements of a conceptual photography that is 'everyday' in all regards. The main reason for this are the highly sophisticated shooting or printing techniques that are characteristic for a large part of their oeuvres.

Der zweite Teil beschreibt zwei Romane von Alcott, Behind A Mask or; A Woman?s Power und Work: The Story of Experience. Der vierte Teil beinhaltet die Analyse von drei Kurzgeschichten, "The Two Offers" von Harper, "An Old Maids Story" von Cary und "Mary and Ellen Grosvenor, or the Two Sisters" von Mrs. A.J. Graves. Jahrhunderts waren. eng: Marriage seemed to be the crucial factor in identifying a woman in society. Her marital status provided the woman cultural and social identities, such as wife, mother and widow. Besides marriage, age was a significant factor that determined her role in society and defined, for instance, unmarried woman as an old maid or spinster. The unmarried woman was considered old only for remaining single; her aging process was culturally and sociologically influenced. This diploma thesis focuses on the above mentioned issues. The field of research is nineteenth century American womens literature, including works by Louise May Alcott, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Alice Cary, and Mrs. A.J. Graves. An emphasis is put on the influential factors determining a womans identity, and how age played a significant role in society. The paper is divided into four sections. The first section provides several theories about marriage, age and identity. The second section of the paper includes analysis of two novels by Alcott, Behind A Mask or; A Woman?s Power and Work: The Story of Experience. The third section comprises the analysis of two novels by Phelps, Dr. Zay and The Story of Avis. The two protagonists are independent of men and they are immersed in their occupation as physician and artist. It is be explored why Dr. Zay is considered to be unwomanly; she performs male roles and not the ones expected of her by society. The fourth section contains analysis of three short stories: "The Two Offers" by Harper, "An Old Maids Story" by Cary and "Mary and Ellen Grosvenor, or the Two Sisters" by Mrs. A.J. Graves. It is explored how women?s social identities are determined on the basis of their marital status and age. These stories attempt to combat stereotypical attitudes towards single women and identifying them as being "the other". The heroines identities are socially and culturally constructed.
