This thesis is about strangeness and strangers in the Maqāmāt of Ḥarīrī; an Arabic work of literary fiction from the 6th/12th century, featuring a lettered man pursuing a trickster in fifty episodic narratives to collect his rare words, sophisticated compositions, and curious accounts. A key element of the maqāma genre, as noted by Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAlī al-Ḥuṣrī in the 5th/11th century, is its strangeness. Al-Ḥarīrī accentuates this element and employs it in two different aspects of his maqāmāt: the vocabulary, and the trickster’s relationship to space. The first aspect of unusual vocabulary combines Bedouin terms, curses, argot, and jargon, which Arabic lexicography categorizes as gharīb: “strange” or “rare.” The sec-ond manifests in the relationship of human experience with space, meaning the act of mov-ing from one location to another, being in isolation or exile, away from home and familiarity, trading curiosities, collecting unusual anecdotes, and being a gharīb, a stranger. The Ḥarīriyya readers during the premodern period of Islām recognized the strangeness of al-Ḥarīrī’s language and widely appreciated it. Their Nahḍawī (Arabic modernist) counterparts objected to the literary model this feature represented, along with the Ḥarīriyya’s immorali-ty, ornate language, and repetitive plots. They sought to replace it with a literary style that was closer to European literature. This shift was a direct consequence of the influence of early modern European scholarship on Classical Arabic literature, especially al-Ḥarīrī. Against the grain of early Orientalist and modernist readings, I argue that the Ḥarīriyya makes more sense, from an aesthetic, intellectual, and literary standpoint, when it is read and appraised according to its own terms, particularly through the reception paradigm its first readers adopted. That paradigm has been neglected also in much of contemporary scholarship. Owing to the assumption that traveling and moving in space is a ‘‘hollow frame’’ in the maqāma genre, scholarship has until ...

The Yemeni novel has historically been difficult to define. Up to 1927, Yemeni literature consisted largely of poetry and short stories. Poetry and folk song poems in the south and north of Yemen greatly attracted attention of Yemeni and Arabic writers as well as readers, and many collections of poems were published. Due to factors ranging from the scarcity of publishing houses to their limited commercial capacity, however, the Yemeni novel took a relatively long time to establish itself. The Researcher Sabry Muslim proposes that Yemeni novels are actually unknown to the Arab reader and even to the Yemeni reader, noting that most Yemeni novelists write outside of Yemen. Similarly, the writer Ibrahim Abu Talib suggests that if we tried to count the number of Yemeni novels published before 2000, there are less than one hundred. Scholars also disagree on which novel is the first Yemeni novel. Although the Yemeni writer Ahmed Abdullah Al-Saqqaf published his novel Fatāt Qarut in 1927, critics including Hisham Ali, Amna Yusef, and Ibrahim Abu Talib, discount it in their studies or in articles because it was published outside Yemen. Instead, they believe that the novel, Said by Muhammad Ali Luqman, is the first Yemeni novel on the pretext that it was published in 1939 in Yemen. Indeed, many early twentieth-century works of literary history claim that Yemeni authors have no distinct tradition of the novel. Academics deny the existence of the novel in Yemen, to the point of claiming that Yemeni culture and style of life was not ready for the potential of fictional creation. The writer and critic Muhammad Nasser Sheraa agrees, writing that, “The genre of novelist creativity in Yemen has taken a modest path since its inception in the year 1939 until now, if we consider the novel Said by the Muhammad Ali Luqman as the beginning of the track.” Half a century later, it is clear that these ideas have been based on lack of research and rigorous thinking. This thesis takes a purposefully broad view of the Yemeni novel, reading ...

'The Library of a madrasa in Aleppo at the end of the Ottoman Era' argues for the importance of Islamic libraries’ inventories, most of which are still in manuscript form, in writing the histories of libraries. It provides a unique insight into the book culture of Aleppo in the 19th century. The document at the heart of this book is the "renewed register of the books endowed by ʿUthmān Pāshā". Among its over 1200 titles we find a variety of different subjects, most importantly those concerned with the transmitted fields of knowledge. Such registers also contain valuable information that can hardly be found in other sources. Conditions of endowment set out the workflow at the library. They help us to identify its targeted users, how the job of the head librarian was conceived, and how the library was supposed to function on a daily basis. Registers even included lists of librarians and their salaries. Moreover, the attached inventories themselves are arguably the best instrument at our disposal to identify disciplines and sciences that were of interest to scholars and students during that period. A qualitative and quantitative analysis and categorisation is possible on the basis of the library's acquisition as found in its inventory. In a second part, this study follows the 20th century trajectory of the books that once sat on the shelves of this library. Most importantly, it succeeds in identifying for almost half of the titles the actual manuscripts among the holdings of the Syrian National Library in Damascus. The book invites us to reassess inventories, both as a major source for studying the histories of medieval and early modern libraries, and through a case study of an endowed library in Aleppo. It thus exemplifies the use of endowment documents and book registers as an additional window to survey the intellectual life of a city in a particular period.

At the end of the 10th/16th century in Aleppo, a weaver, cloth merchant, and poet named Kamāl al-Dīn would regularly take his time to fill blank pages with his varied observations. But it was not a linear narrative he produced, nor was it a diary. Rather, he scribbled down accounts on the political and social life of his city and the region; the climate; economic developments; his craft; poetry, much of it his own; anecdotes; reading excerpts; obituaries of dignitaries and friends; history. In doing so, Kamāl al-Dīn upends assumptions about literary agency, faith, and class in the Ottoman Arab provinces and thus gives us insights rarely seen in other contemporary works. Only a fragment of what once must have been a sizeable work survives, now preserved in the Forschungsbibliothek Schloss Friedenstein in Gotha under the shelfmark MS orient. A 114. It represents the earliest known Arabic notebook of an artisan or merchant.
