This is the first edition of a major work by the fifteenth-century poet and translator, Osbern Bokenham, consisting of a translation of Jacobus de Voragine's "Legenda aurea" complemented by lives of various British saints. This work was thought to have been lost before the discovery, in 2005, of the unique manuscript in the library of Sir Walter Scott at Abbotsford House, identified as Bokenham's work by the present editor. Bokenham's work, which combines prose and verse, was influenced, both in content and style, by Chaucer and Lydgate. The patrons, for whom he translated several of these saint's lives, reveal networks of patronage amongst prominent members of the gentry and nobility in fifteenth-century East Anglia
