    Spiel und Theater sind vielfältig verbunden, aber solange der Spielbegriff mit Harmlosigkeit assoziiert ist, nimmt er dem Theater Schärfe und Wirksamkeit. Gunter Lösel fragt deshalb nach einer Begriffserweiterung, die auch die dunkle Seite des Spiels umfasst. Zwischen Spiel, Wirklichkeit und Fiktion entwickelt er ein »Dreiweltenmodell des Theaters« und geht der Frage nach, warum die Spezies Mensch ein performatives Spiel entwickelt hat, in welchem sie sich negative Handlungen oder konflikthafte Situationen vor Augen führt. Durch Verbindungen zu Spieltheorie, Gaming, Philosophie, Performance-Studies und KI entsteht ein Reflexionsraum, der so den Widerspruch zwischen Harmlosigkeit des Spiels und Wirkungsmacht des Theaters auflöst.

Die Beiträger*innen aus der Literatur- und Medienwissenschaft untersuchen die Strukturlogik des Beschwerdeführens in Literatur, Film und anderen Medien und decken auf, wie dessen grundlegende Ambivalenz die Verhandlung von Sachfragen bestimmt. Dabei liegt der Fokus nicht nur darauf, über was, sondern auch darauf, wie Beschwerde geführt wird.

Dabei musste sich die Verdatung von Umwelten und Körpern als Funktion von Übertragungszeiten zunächst aber historisch beweisen. Christoph Borbach widmet sich in neun Fallgeschichten frühen Temporalisierungen von Räumen in Kontexten von u.a. Medizin, Post, Militär und Computertechnik. Innovativ beleuchtet er so die Medienkultur-, Wissens- und Praxisgeschichte des Akteurs Delay - von ersten Sensormedien im 19. Jahrhundert bis hin zu Infrastrukturen der Verarbeitung von Big Data in Echtzeit.

Joana Serrado inaugurates anxiousness as a category of mystical knowledge in this innovative historical and philosophical study. Based on the life and mystical writings of Joana de Jesus, a Cistercian nun, intellectual disciple of Teresa of Avila, this study shows the cultural embeddedness of anxiousness: a feeling akin to the Portuguese term »saudade« (yearning, Sehnsucht). A mystical project that reshapes feminist principles of autonomy, agency and desire.

    Exploring the rise of open scholarship in the digital era and its transformational impact on how knowledge is created, shared, and accessed, this open access book offers new insights on the history, development, and future directions of openness in the humanities and identifies key drivers, opportunities, and challenges. The concept of open research is reconfiguring scholarly communication across all disciplines, changing how understandings are produced through more accessible, participatory, ethical, and transparent approaches, reaching and involving far broader and more diverse publics. Considering multiple stakeholder perspectives, Arthur and Hearn argue that for the humanities to proactively contribute to open knowledge at the global scale, new ways of thinking are needed within every part of the system. In the open information economy, the humanities are on a trajectory following the sciences, but parts of the world are almost completely left out. A cultural shift is required for universities to unlock the powerful potential of humanities open scholarship. In this wide-ranging overview, the authors show why and how the global research community must work together for meaningful outcomes. Open scholarship has undergone a profound change since its beginnings from a call to action to an essential principle in research organizations internationally. However, the core impulse remains: to reshape the information environment and harness the world’s knowledge for the greatest benefit of society. Richard Slipp unterzieht Werke Heins aus über vierzig Jahren einer narratologischen Analyse. Damit stellt er sich gegen das Gros der Hein-Forschung, in dem vor allem die inhaltliche Ebene und der behauptete historische Bezug dominieren. Die aufgedeckte Selbstreflexivität Christoph Heins eröffnet so bisher unbekannte Sichtweisen auf das Schaffen des Schriftstellers.

    Over the last few decades, increased production of films and series that have fantastical structures has been observed, especially in Romance language-speaking countries and the US. A renewed boom in the genre is thus apparent in those nations which had already been at the epicentre of the production of fantastic narratives in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of the contemporary works convey a latent ontological uncertainty that arises from unusual handling of language, images and sound. The articles in this book examine the question of whether and how images, sounds and dialogues in fantastic films/series—and, sometimes, novels—that have gone off the rails can be interpreted as allegorical counterparts of contemporary thinking in society which has also gone awry.

    Ein interdisziplinärer Band im Open-Access: Die Aufwertung der Volkssprachen in der Frühen Neuzeit führte zu einer Intensivierung und internationalen Öffnung der europäischen Übersetzungskultur. Der Gebrauch des Englischen bleibt in dieser Zeit allerdings weitgehend auf die Insel beschränkt, während die Sprache auf dem Kontinent noch wenig geläufig ist. Erst seit dem 18. Jahrhundert gewinnt sie an internationaler Bedeutung und steigt schließlich zur modernen Weltsprache auf. Der Band fokussiert auf die vormoderne Situation und untersucht in 19 literatur-, kunst-, philosophie- und frömmigkeitsgeschichtlichen Fallstudien die deutsche Rezeption der frühneuzeitlichen englischen Literatur und Kultur. Mit Blick auf das bislang unzureichend erforschte deutsch-englische Interaktionsfeld erhellt er ebenso ausgewählte Personen, Institutionen und Wissensfelder wie Werkübertragungen, Gattungstransformationen und Übersetzungspraktiken, die den bereits in dieser Zeit bemerkenswert dichten Austausch zwischen England und dem Alten Reich prägten. Welche Netzwerke und Medien ermöglichten z.B. die Rezeption einflussreicher Denker und Dichter wie Bacon, Hobbes oder Milton im deutschsprachigen Raum; wie kam es gleichsam im Mutterland des Protestantismus zu einer auffallend intensiven Übersetzung englischer Erbauungsliteratur; welche Rolle spielten Parallelübersetzungen oder auch Übersetzungen aus zweiter Hand, etwa dort, wo der kulturelle Transfer über eine dritte Sprache wie das Französische oder Niederländische erfolgte? Auf solche Fragen werden im Band neue Antworten gegeben.

    Im »pöbel« oder »pofel« erkannten die Gelehrten bereits in der Frühen Neuzeit eine große Gefahr für das Gemeinwesen: für die Ordnung des Staates, aber auch für die Konventionen der frühneuzeitlichen Gelehrtenrepublik selbst. Durch Mangel an Arbeitsfleiß und Bildungstrieb stört der Pöbel seitdem immer wieder die soziale Ordnung. Wer oder was aber ist dieser Pöbel, von dem auch die Gegenwart wieder zu berichten weiß? Wer nannte wen wann und aus welchem Grund »Pöbel«? Roman Widders Studie verbindet Sozial-, Protest- und Literaturgeschichte, um ein fundiertes historisches Verständnis des Pöbels als Verwerfung arbeitender Armut zu entwickeln. Gerade für die Dichtkunst war der Pöbel ein omnipräsentes Problem, weil sich in ihm die Prekarisierung des literarischen Lebens artikulierte. Verstanden als Sprechakt und figura - als Sozial- und Redefigur gleichermaßen - fällt die Rede vom Pöbel nämlich auf den Sprecher zurück. Die Exklusion der Ehrlosen aus dem literarischen Gewerbe zeugt deshalb keineswegs von der elitären Autonomie der Urteilenden; sie soll vielmehr den schwankenden Wert der eigenen Rede steigern und bringt so die materiellen Voraussetzungen publizistischer Rede zur Sprache. Der Pöbel als Figur der Poetik korrespondiert dabei in der Frühen Neuzeit mit verwandten Figuren wie dem Pickelhering in der Komödie und dem Pikaro im Roman. In Texten u.a. von Opitz, Gryphius und Grimmelshausen zeigt Widder, dass der Pöbel als Übersetzungsfigur zwischen symbolischem und ökonomischem Kapital zu deuten ist. Dabei rückt besonders die massive Geldentwertung der sogenannten Kipper- und Wipperzeit um 1620 in den Blick, denn bereits hier ist die Überschneidung politischer und literarischer Exklusionsbestrebungen exemplarisch greifbar. Im Zuge der Formierung der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts kommt die Entwertung arbeitender Armut (labouring poor) als »Pöbel« schließlich zur vollen Entfaltung.

Schönbächlers Studie geht solchen Fragen anhand eines Motivkomplexes nach, der in Thomas Manns Frühwerk Gestalt annimmt und der im dritten Band der »Joseph«-Tetralogie einen bedeutsamen Wandel durchläuft: Erstmals widerfährt einer Frauenfigur die Mann`sche ›Heimsuchung‹ von der eigenen Leidenschaft. Geschlecht wird so zum Vehikel, das in der Zeit des deutschen Faschismus eine Ehrenrettung früherer Vorstellungen von Deutsch- und Künstlertum erlaubt. Schönbächlers intertextuell-poetologische Perspektive macht einerseits die Durchlässigkeit zwischen Bibliothek und Werk sichtbar und andererseits deren Diskurspoetologie.

Ausgehend von bibliothekarischen und archivarischen Überlegungen um 1900 zeichnet Lucas Knierzinger die moderne Faszination für das Dokumentarische und ihre literarischen Auswirkungen nach. Dokumentieren stellt um 1900 eine Kulturtechnik dar, die mit Vorstellungen und Träumen der Organisierbarkeit im modernen Informationsüberfluss auftritt. Als literarische Verfahren verknüpft sie sich mit neuen Ideen von künstlerischer Arbeit und Formaten eines Werkes. The 'art' of the actress refers to the actress represented in visual art, as well as to the actress's labor and skill in making art ephemerally through performance and tangibly through objects. Moving away from the concept of the 'actress as muse,' a relationship that privileges the role of the male artist over the inspirational subject, the author focuses instead on the varied significance of representations, reproductions, and re-animations of actresses, female artists, and theatrical women across media.     In classical Athens, a funeral speech was delivered for dead combatants almost every year, the most famous being that by Pericles in 430 BC. In 1981, Nicole Loraux transformed our understanding of this genre. Her The Invention of Athens showed how it reminded the Athenians who they were as a people. Loraux demonstrated how each speech helped them to maintain the same self-identity for two centuries. But The Invention of Athens was far from complete. This volume brings together top-ranked experts to finish Loraux's book. It answers the important questions about the numerous surviving funeral speeches that she ignored. It also undertakes a comparison of the funeral oration with other genres that is missing in her famous book. What emerges is a speech that had a much greater political impact than Loraux thought. This volume puts the study of war in Athenian culture on a completely new footing.
