    Tzvetan Todorov nähert sich dem Symbol nicht theoretisch, sondern historisch: er gibt einen Überblick über die Deutungen, die dieser Begriff bei so verschiedenen Autoren wie Aristoteles, Cicero, Quintilian, Augustin, Lessing, Diderot, Goethe, Novalis, Moritz, den Gebrüdern Schlegel, Freud und Jakobson erfahren hat. Anhand luzider Einzelanalysen zeigt der Autor eine geistesgeschichtliche Entwicklung auf, die von der Antike zur Aufklärung, von der Romantik bis in die Gegenwart reicht. Tzvetan Todorov's approach to symbols is historical rather than theoretical, providing a survey of the interpretations of this concept to be found in the writings of authors as various as Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian, St. Augustine, Lessing, Diderot, Goethe, Novalis, Moritz, the brothers Schlegel, Freud and Jakobson. With a wealth of penetrating individual analyses the author traces a line of development in the history of ideas that ranges from Classical Antiquity to the Age of Enlightenment and from Romanticism to the present.

Their "twofold" nature celebrates inner and outer consciousness, the participation of the object in the poetic vision. In this splendid anthology, Bly introduces the poems with extensive commentary to show society's changing attitudes toward nature - a movement away from anthropocentric assumptions fostered by Descartes, the church, imperial ambitions, and the rise of technology. Those beliefs held that human thought was the only sentient force in the universe and resulted in the subjugation of the natural world to the designs of the human intellect. Starting with the works of Pope, Swift, Milton, and others representing the "old position," the volume proceeds to the poetry of Blake, Hḻderlin, Rilke, Goethe, Keats, and on to the enlightened sensibilities of Rexroth, Levertov, Berry, and, among many others, Bly himself.     Main description: In diesem Band wird nach der Ausbildung erzählprosaistischer Strukturen in einer Zeit gefragt, in der sich die überkommenen Idealismen als obsolet erwiesen und die sich für die meisten künstlerischen Autoren durch herabstimmende Diffusionsvorgänge und lähmende Verhältnistristesse kennzeichnete. Hervorgearbeitet wird das vielfältig Experimentierende von Erzählansätzen; erörtert werden prosaistische Verfahrensarten, die dem Bewußtsein von Differentiellem entsprangen und denen in erheblichem Maße ein ironischer Grundgestus das Gepräge gibt. Außer der Einleitung des Herausgebers enthält der Band neun Einzelstudien zu erzähl-prosaistischen Texten von Goethe, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Tieck, Schefer, Louise Brachmann, Arnim, Eichendorff, Alexis und Heine. Main description: This volume inquires into the evolution of narrative prose structures in a period in which traditional idealisms had proved obsolete and a generally inchoate intellectual climate and debilitating material conditions were prevalent for most creative writers. The emphasis here is on the frequently experimental approach to narration in that period, with particular attention being paid to prose techniques springing from an acute awareness of differentialism and hence largely characterised by a fundamentally ironic stance. Alongside the editor's introduction the volume contains articles on narrative prose works by Goethe, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Tieck, Schefer, Louise Brachmann, Arnim, Eichendorff, Alexis and Heine.

    Die Untersuchung reformuliert Probleme sozialgeschichtlicher Literaturerklärung unter systemtheoretischen Gesichtspunkten. Sie zeigt, wie unter dem Problemdruck der neu entstehenden Exklusions-Individualität altes Ideen- und Formulierungsgut umgedeutet und in neuer Funktion eingesetzt wird. In gründlicher Analyse wird eine neue Lektüre dreier Werke des jungen Goethe entworfen: des Pastorbriefs, des Götz und des Clavigo. Es zeigt sich, daß die bisherigen Interpretationen die Koordinaten von Aufklärung und Empfindsamkeit selbst übernommen und damit die sozialgeschichtlich motivierten Umdeutungen verpaßt und das Problempotential dieser Werke gerade um die historische Pointe verkürzt hatten. The present study sets out to reformulate problems posed by the socio-historical explanation of literature by regarding them in terms of systems theory. It shows how, under the pressure of emergent 'exclusive individuality', traditional ideas and formulations are reinterpreted and pressed into service to perform new functions. Three works from Goethe's early period - the "Pastorbrief", "Götz" and "Clavigo" - are subjected to thorough analysis and a new reading of them is proposed. It becomes apparent that previous interpretations have themselves adopted the coordinates of Enlightenment and Empfindsamkeit, thus missing the opportunity for socio-historically motivated reinterpretations and denying these works much of their specifically historical thrust.

    In diesem Band wird nach der Ausbildung erzählprosaistischer Strukturen in einer Zeit gefragt, in der sich die überkommenen Idealismen als obsolet erwiesen und die sich für die meisten künstlerischen Autoren durch herabstimmende Diffusionsvorgänge und lähmende Verhältnistristesse kennzeichnete. Hervorgearbeitet wird das vielfältig Experimentierende von Erzählansätzen; erörtert werden prosaistische Verfahrensarten, die dem Bewußtsein von Differentiellem entsprangen und denen in erheblichem Maße ein ironischer Grundgestus das Gepräge gibt. Außer der Einleitung des Herausgebers enthält der Band neun Einzelstudien zu erzähl-prosaistischen Texten von Goethe, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Tieck, Schefer, Louise Brachmann, Arnim, Eichendorff, Alexis und Heine. This volume inquires into the evolution of narrative prose structures in a period in which traditional idealisms had proved obsolete and a generally inchoate intellectual climate and debilitating material conditions were prevalent for most creative writers. The emphasis here is on the frequently experimental approach to narration in that period, with particular attention being paid to prose techniques springing from an acute awareness of differentialism and hence largely characterised by a fundamentally ironic stance. Alongside the editor's introduction the volume contains articles on narrative prose works by Goethe, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Tieck, Schefer, Louise Brachmann, Arnim, Eichendorff, Alexis and Heine.

    Im Sinne der "lectio difficilior" soll im folgenden die Spur der metaphora audax verfolgt und die These vertreten werden, die Parallelführung zwischen göttlichem und poetischem Schöpfungsakt gelte für die ganze Kosmogonie; sie impliziere damit auch zwei grundsätzlich verschiedene poetische Schaffenstypologien, und Goethe kontrastiere in Wiederfinden über die beiden Schöpfungsphasen der Weltwerdung den einen Typus des dichterischen Schaffensprozesses mitsamt dem ihm innewohnenden Leidensdruck mit seinem Gegentypus, der freilich deutlichen Wunschbildcharakter trage.

    Die hier vorgeschlagene Rekonstruktion der eher zufälligen Entstehung der Spinoza-Studie und insbesondere die Interpretation des zweiten Teils dieser Schrift als ironische, jedoch entschiedene Distanzierung von den im ersten Teil formulierten Prinzipien vermag nun abschließend auch eine wenigstens plausible Antwort auf die nicht nebensächliche Frage zu geben, warum Goethe Zeit seines Lebens nicht nur nie an eine Veröffentlichung dieses angeblich so wichtigen Zeugnisses seiner Naturauffassung gedacht, sondern diesen Text auch an keiner Stelle je erwähnt hat.

    In a book written during the First World War, Thomas Mann wrote that political activity was alien to the German spirit and that "in fact the political element was absent from the German concept of education." The Politics of the Unpolitical demonstrates the essential unreliability of this generalization by focusing on the political activity of ten of Germany's most widely respected writers in the period from the French Revolution to the founding of the Bismarck Reich in 1871. Gordon A. Craig's book shows how Goethe, Schiller, Heinrich von Kleist, Wilhelm von Humboldt, Holderlin, and Heine were fascinated by the political issues of their day and reacted either by entering public service or threw themselves into efforts to change society for the better. In his study of ten of Germany's most important intellectuals Craig, focuses on their political views and activities and argues that they were not, in fact, representatives of the genre of the "unpolitical German.".

Ein Figurenalphabet“ handelt es sich um einen Pressendruck, der in alphabetischer Reihenfolge Abbildungen von Skulpturen, die jeweils einen Buchstaben darstellen, mit Textzitaten von verschiedenen Autoren verknüpft. Die menschen- oder tierähnlichen Skulpturen zeichnen sich durch dünne Eisenstangen, die an Beine oder Arme erinnern, und durch einen Corpus aus unterschiedlich geformten Betonblöcken aus, in denen die einzelnen Buchstaben reliefartig zu erkennen sind. Zu diesen Abbildungen ist jeweils ein Textzitat, das einen bestimmten Buchstaben auf humorvolle oder nachdenkliche Weise thematisiert, zugeordnet.
