    Jurij Karlovič Oleša war einer der bedeutenden Schriftsteller der frühen Sowjetzeit, jener in literarischer Hinsicht lebendigsten Periode, nämlich der 20ger Jahre. Tiefgehenden und vielseitigen Einblick gerade in diese neuere (wie auch die neueste) russische Literatur, ebenso wie belebteres Verständnis für literaturtheoretische Betrachtungsweisen vermittelte mir Professor Dr. Wolfgang Kasack, dem ich auch für die entscheidende Anregung zu der Dissertation und die wertvollen Hinweise während der Arbeit zu größtem Dank verpflichtet bin. Die Arbeit wurde gefördert durch ein Promotionsstipendium der Universität Köln, in dessen Rahmen zwei Aufenthalte in der Sowjetunion es erlaubten, in Deutschland nicht zugängliche Literatur miteinzubeziehen.

    The Netherlandish rhetoricians of the sixteenth century have, in the course of the last decades, shed their image of third-rate poets who, lacking all sense of true beauty, were capable only of pompous verbosity and a shallow manipulation of form. The new scholarly assessment has also shed light on the role they played in the cultural and literary life of their time, and it now appears that many of their dramas are well worth staging. Once the sixteenth century was freed from the stigma of being the "preparatory phase" for the Golden Age, the way was clear for thorough studies of the literature produced during the most turbulent period in the history of the Low Countries. This volume contains essays which deal with works written not only in Dutch, but also in French and in New Latin, with topics ranging from the effects of poetic principles on literary practice to the use of poetry as a means for improving society and developing the individual. The unifying thread in these studies is the pivotal importance of rhetoric in all forms of literary expression.

    The production, distribution, and perception of moving images are undergoing a radical transformation. Ever-faster computers, digital technology, and microelectronic are joining forces to produce advanced audiovision -the media vanishing point of the 20th century. Very little will remain unchanged. The classic institutions for the mediation of film - cinema and television - are revealed to be no more than interludes in the broader history of the audiovisual media. This book interprets these changes not simply as a cultural loss but also as a challenge: the new audiovisions have to be confronted squarely to make strategic intervention possible. Audiovisions provides a historical underpinning for this active approach. Spanning 100 years, from the end of the 19th to the end of the 20th century, it reconstructs the complex genesis of cinema and television as historically relative - and thus finite - cultural forms, focussing on the dynamics and tension in the interaction between the apparatus and its uses. The book is also a plea for 'staying power' in studies of cultural technology and technological culture of film. Essayistic in style, it dispenses with complicated cross references and, instead, is structured around distinct historical phases. Montages of images and text provide supplemental information, contrast, and comment. De productie, de distributie, en de waarneming van bewegende beelden zijn onderhevig aan een radicale transformatie. Doordat steeds snellere computers en digitale technologie kracht bundelen, ontstaat er een nieuwe vorm van 'audiovisie'. Bijna niets zal hetzelfde blijven. De ooit 'normale' media voor het uitdragen van film - de bioscoop en de televisie - blijken niet meer te zijn dan een intermezzo in de geschiedenis van de audiovisuele media. Dit boek interpreteert de veranderingen niet als cultureel verlies maar als een uitdaging: de nieuwe 'audiovisie' moet anders benaderd worden om strategische interventie mogelijk te maken. 'Audiovisions' ondersteunt deze benadering op historische wijze. Door te kijken naar 100 jaar, van het eind van de negentiende tot aan het eind van de 20ste eeuw, laat het zien waarom de bioscoop en televisie als eindige, culturele vormen gezien moeten worden. Tevens is het boek een pleidooi voor ' blijvend kracht' van studies naar culturele technologie en de technologische cultuur van film. Essayistisch in stijl, is het boek gestructureerd rond verschillende historische fasen. De beelden en bij de tekst zorgen voor supplementaire informatie, contrast, en aanvullend commentaar.

In linguistics, both linguistic and innovative works on pragmatics and semantics, slavic minor languages ​​and discourse linguistics are published.     The comparative analysis of the Ady poem "Sírni, sírni, sírni" and the Krleža poem "Tužaljka nad crkvom" convincingly proves the paraphrasic character of the latter and thus the creative reception of the poem of Ady. With the comparative investigation of the motif world and the linguistic archaisms of Ady and Krleža, the facts of the Ady reception, which are everywhere present in the Kerempuh ballads, are made visible. Durch die komparatistische Untersuchung des Ady-Gedichtes "Sírni, sírni, sírni" und des Krleža-Gedichtes "Tužaljka nad crkvom" kann man den Paraphrasencharakter des letzteren und damit die kreative Rezeption des Ady-Gedichtes überzeugend beweisen. Mit der komparatistischen Untersuchung der Motivwelt und der sprachlichen Archaismen Adys und Krležas sind die in den Kerempuh-Balladen überall vorhandenen Tatsachen der Ady-Rezeption sichtbar gemacht.

    This book describes representations of Christ in Russian literature from the beginning to the end of the twentieth century. The analysis of the works of more than a hundred writers illustrates the great religious and formal diversity of the implementation of this motif, thereby expanding the overall conception of each individual author and of the development of Russian literature. It also shows its embedding and independence within European intellectual history and its dependence on the political development of the Soviet Union. The anthology attached to this issue contains 100 partly complete and partly excerpted text examples in Russian. Scientific literature with anthology in Russian. Dieses Buch beschreibt Darstellungen Christi in der russischen Literatur von den Anfängen bis zum Ende des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts. Die Analyse der Werke von über hundert Schriftstellern veranschaulicht die große religiöse und formale Vielfalt der Umsetzung dieses Motivs und erweitert dabei die Gesamtvorstellung von jedem einzelnen Autor und von der Entwicklung der russischen Literatur. The following chapter on Chvyl'ovyj's journalism will be preceded by an outline of literary politics in Ukraine in the 1920s. This section, which is supplemented with corresponding passages in the biography, presents in a cross-section the representatives and programs of the Ukrainian literary associations and the course of the literary discussion, with emphasis on Chvyl'ovyj's activities. This background is crucial for the understanding of Chvyl'ovyj's journalism, which is also examined in the third chapter from the perspective of Spengler reception. In der vorliegenden Studie wird im ersten Kapitel im Zusammenhang mit der Biographie Chvyl'ovyjs offenen und in bisherigen Darstellungen kontrovers diskutierten Fragen nachgegangen. Vor diesem Hintergrund entsteht durch den kritischen Vergleich bisher publizierter biographischer Materialien eine eigene biographische Skizze. Dem nachfolgenden Kapitel über Chvyl'ovyjs Publizistik wird ein Abriß der Literaturpolitik in der Ukraine der 20er Jahre vorausgeschickt. Dieser Teil, der sich mit entsprechenden Passagen in der Biographie ergänzt, stellt in einem Querschnitt die Vertreter und Programme der ukrainischen Literaturvereinigungen und den Verlauf der Literaturdiskussion dar, wobei der Schwerpunkt bei Chvyl'ovyjs Aktivitäten liegt. Dieser Hintergrund ist maßgeblich zum Verständnis der Publizistik Chvyl'ovyjs, die auch im dritten Kapitel unter dem speziellen Blickwinkel der Spengler-Rezeption untersucht wird.

    After the Russian President Mikhail Gorbačev initiated the era of Perestroika and Glasnost and thus made the archives accessible again, it was finally possible to reprint those texts that had been withheld from the public as a cultural heritage for so long, such as: the texts of the Russian religious philosophers and symbolists, which are the subject of the present work. For the first time in almost seven decades, the Russians were once again able to buy books by Vladimir Solov'ev, Vassilij Rozanov, Nikolai Berdjaev, Dmitri Merezkovsky, Zinaida Gippius - to name but a few - in their bookstores. Today, after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, these texts are unexpectedly up-to-date, as they already discuss conditions for reforming the Russian state based on concepts of a new gender ethic and gender aesthetics. Nachdem der russische Präsident Michail Gorbačev die Ära Perestrojka und Glasnost' eingeleitet und damit auch wieder die Archive zugänglich gemacht hatte, konnten endlich jene Texte wieder gedruckt werden, die als kulturelles Erbe der Öffentlichkeit solange vorenthalten worden waren, wie z.B. die Texte der russischen Religionsphilosophen und Symbolisten, um die es in der vorliegenden Arbeit geht. Zum ersten Mal nach fast sieben Jahrzehnten konnten die Russen in ihren Buchhandlungen wieder Bücher von Vladimir Solov'ev, Vassilij Rozanov, Nikolaj Berdjaev, Dmitrij Merežkovskij, Zinaida Gippius' - um nur ein paar Namen zu nennen - kaufen. Heute, nach dem Zerfall der Sowjetunion, erfreuen sich diese Texte einer unerwarteten Aktualität, werden doch darin bereits Voraussetzungen zur Reformierung des russischen Staates diskutiert, die auf Konzepten einer neuen Geschlechter-Ethik und Geschlechts-Ästhetik aufbauen.

    In examining the subject and his relation to the objects, it can be seen that Andrei Voznesensky's official poetry of the late 1950s and early 1960s contains postmodern elements; indeed, because it is unconsciously postmodern, it far exceeds the original conception of French philosophy from "postmodernism" corresponds to the so-called Russian Neoavantgarde. The aim of this work, to comprehensively and closely examine the relationship between subject and object in Voznesensky, and the comparative approach require that one limit oneself to exemplary analyzes. For this purpose, six poems were selected that are meaningful in relation to the subject. Bei der Untersuchung des Subjekts und seinem Verhältnis zu den Objekten zeigt sich, daß bereits Andrej Voznesenskijs offizielle Lyrik der späten 50er und frühen 60er Jahre postmoderne Elemente enthält, ja daß sie, da sie unbewußt postmodern ist, sogar weit mehr der ursprünglichen Auffassung der französischen Philosophie von "Postmoderne" entspricht als die sogenannte russische Neoavantgarde. Die Zielsetzung dieser Arbeit, umfassend und textnah das Verhältnis zwischen Subjekt und Objekt bei Voznesenskij zu untersuchen, und die komparatistische Vorgehensweise erfordern es, sich auf exemplarische Analysen zu beschränken. Dazu wurden sechs Gedichte ausgewählt, die in bezug auf das Subjekt aussagekräftig sind.

    Die Arbeit stellt einen Beitrag zur historischen Semantik des amerikanischen Englisch dar. Der Verfasser beschreibt den schwer greifbaren Sinn von experience im Werk John Deweys. Den Sinnbeschreibungen liegen systematische sprachwissenschaftliche Analysen ausgewählter Schriften zugrunde. Es wird aufgezeigt, wie der Sinn von experience durch den spezifischen Gebrauch, den Dewey von sprachlichen Mitteln macht, in den Schriften je neu hervortritt. Sprachtheoretisch knüpft die Untersuchung dabei an Vorarbeiten zum Phänomen der semantischen Innovation von P. Ricoeur an. Methodisch folgt sie der von C.S. Peirce angeregten Analogie zwischen den logischen Schlußverfahren und den Stufen des Forschungsprozesses. Die Analysen stützen sich auf umfangreiches, im Register aufgeführtes Belegmaterial.

    Archaeological research and ancient records have been combined in this work to provide a comprehensive account of the buildings of Merv, an oasis city in the middle of the Turkmenistani desert. Founded in the sixth century BC, Merv was a key staging post along the Central Asian trade routes linking Europe and India, and its buildings - palaces, pavilions, gardens and towers springing from the sand - impressed all who visited it. Although eroded by time and weather, enough remains of these buildings to illustrate the evolution of architectural styles in the early medieval and Seljuk eras (7th to 13th cents AD), a period during which the Islamic world developed its own unique range of building types and decorative motifs. This book examines in detail each of the surviving buildings of Merv, discussing their form and function – from palaces to ice-houses, from fortified watch-towers to libraries and dovecotes. Details of doors, windows, corridors and stairways, monumental entrances, rooms, domes and vaults, niches, wall decoration and flooring are described and illustrated in great detail.     Although the objective of the Monumental Brass Society is to promote the study both of monumental brasses and of incised slabs, research on the two media has proceeded along separate and largely independent lines. This is the first work to combine the stylistic analysis of monumental brasses with incised slabs. Like brasses, incised slabs are susceptible to stylistic analysis to identify workshop groupings. This book identifies existing and recorded Purbeck marble incised slabs from the pre-Black Death London workshops and compares their designs with those of contemporary brasses. The result is a fuller picture than has previously been available of the operations of the London marblers before the Black Death. It suggests that in the late thirteenth century production was on a larger scale than previously believed, and evidence is outlined for the existence of multiple workshops producing brasses and incised slabs in London for much of the period covered by this study.
