Because of the high degree of technological complexity and the increasing convergence of new technologies, it is becoming more and more difficult to develop advanced products for those companies who solely rely on their own in-house core competencies´. One possible response made to these rising requirements is the consideration of cooperation with other companies. Since prior research on cooperation is extensive in its theoretical scope and diverse in its disciplinary bases, it seems appropriate to give a short overview on the literature. In this article, we pursue two purposes: Firstly, we provide a brief and comprehensive picture of theoretical findings on technology-related cooperation pertinent to practitioners by using a process-oriented framework which helps us to integrate the existing literature from different academic disciplines. Secondly, while management scholars have primarily tended to focus on certain research streams, we draw attention to some issues not sufficiently covered by the literature today. We highlight the importance of the technological content (incremental vs. breakthrough and product vs. process innovations) as well as the orientation of the cooperation (horizontal vs. lateral) which should be considered in more detail in future research.

; Because of the importance of inter-firm cooperation in research and development in the field of biotechnology, the authors analyze effects of relevant factors on the management of inter-organizational R&D-projects. Based on prior theoretical and empirical research, certain factors on the management of R&D-cooperation were identified and causal relationships between these factors were analyzed using structural equation modelling. Results of the empirical study in the biotechnology industry show that prior experience with the cooperation partner and the intensity of planning have a positive effect on the efficiency of the cooperation. In contrast to the literature, no direct positive effect of the intensity of cooperation on the efficiency was observed. We conclude that the organisational complexity depending on the intensity of cooperation require a high level of planning.

Biotechnology is considered as one of the key high-technology sectors in the future. It has been increasingly accepted that small, innovative businesses were the major stimulus for the development of this emerging industry. Many studies on new entrepreneurial entrants in biotechnology are mainly addressed to the situation in the United States and neglected developments in other countries. Therefore, the present paper concentrates on two latecomers into the industry of biotechnology, namely Japan and Germany, and addresses the question how different institutional frameworks may have an impact on its emergence. More specifically, we investigate the role of venture capital, governmental initiatives, large companies, and entrepreneurship on the development and current situation of the biotechnology industry. The comparison of the biotechnology industry between two countries against the background of their different institutional settings provides some important insights for management scholars as well as policy makers.
