In this contribution I study the presence and circulation of the writings of Ignatius of Antioch in Ethiopic literature. In Ethiopia Ignatius was undoubtedly less popular than other subapostolic authors and his epistles were never translated in their entirety into Ethiopic. However, fragments of his corpus reached the Horn of Africa via Copto-Arabic sources in the form of quotations. As is often the case with patristic literature, the Ignatian legacy was characterized by adaptations and pseudepigraphy. Genuine and spurious quotations are found in Severos of Ašmunayn’s works, translated into Ethiopic no later than the fourteenth century, and two additional pseudo-Ignatian quotations are transmitted in the Hāymānota ʾabaw, or 'Faith of the Fathers' (sixteenth century). These fragments were later incorporated into several commentaries and treatises of theological and catechetical contents.

The report aims to introduce three little known collections of Gǝʿǝz manuscripts hosted in the following Italian institutions: Castello d’Albertis, fondo Sapeto (Genoa), Biblioteca Giovardiana, fondo Quattrociocchi, and Monumento Nazionale Abbazia di Casamari (both in Veroli, Frosinone). The forty-two manuscripts (codices and scrolls) preserved in the three collections were surveyed, digitized and analysed through non-invasive techniques in the course of two fieldworks conducted in May 2015 and June–July 2017. The present article, conceived as a preliminary report to a more detailed catalogue currently under preparation, describes how the manuscript collections emerged and provides an introductory description of the textual content and the physical features of each item.

It would be ungenerous to claim that the Ethiopian manuscript heritage preserved in major Western libraries, although having been identified and catalogued for decades, has no more surprises in store. Mss BL Or. 818 and BnF Éthiopien 146 are two skilfully executed multiple-text manuscripts which share the same combination of texts, although arranged in a different order. Independent philological surveys have recurrently evidenced a close genetic affinity between the two pieces. Nevertheless, an overall assessment of their history has never been made. A scrutiny of the textual and historical data reveals that the two manuscripts were produced and intended as gifts for the churches of Dabra Ḍaḥāy Qʷǝsqʷām in Gondar and Nārgā Śǝllāse, both established and patronized in the mid-eighteenth century by ʾƎtege Mǝntǝwwāb, mother of ʾAṣe ʾIyāsu II. The present study aims to demonstrate that the two manuscripts are not only outstanding examples of Gondarine bookmaking culture, but also witnesses to a deliberate initiative of production and dissemination of parchment artefacts in favour of ecclesiastical foundations in the area of Lake Ṭānā. Furthermore, independent pieces of evidence from several texts contained in the two codices suggest that MS BnF Éthiopien 146 was most likely copied from MS BL Or. 818.
