    Albert Memmi published the first anthology of francophone Maghrebian literature, he expressed his unhappy belief that francophone writing would quickly be eclipsed by Arabic. To the contrary, this volume demonstrates that the francophone writing of North Africa remains vibrant and prolific. Two distinct periods are evident in contemporary Maghrebian letters, producing the anticolonial works appearing prior to independence and the subsequent critiques of postcolonial society. This collection examines themes common to both periods: identity, conflicts between tradition and modernity, women's place in society, and the lives of North African immigrants living in France. Throughout, the uneasy and ambiguous relationship between the Maghrebian writer and the French language is evident, as is the ongoing political nature of North African literature

    Le terme « baroque », qui désignait à l'origine une perle irrégulière, s'emploie maintenant couramment comme synonyme de « bizarre, fantaisiste, déplacé ». En ce sens, les œuvres littéraires francophones, produites hors de France, qui font l'objet des études de cet ouvrage, paraissent souvent baroques, et leurs auteurs se perçoivent volontiers comme des « irréguliers », par comparaison avec les écrivains de l'Hexagone dont l'identité semble mieux établie. Le terme « baroque » sert aussi à caractériser une époque de transition - et les styles foisonnants qui l'ont illustrée -, où les certitudes du moyen âge chrétien ne tenaient plus, mais sans qu'elles aient été remplacées encore par les valeurs des temps modernes. En cet autre sens, les nouvelles écritures francophones peuvent aussi être dites baroques. Elles témoignent en effet d'une époque qui a perdu ses repères, entre chaos et catastrophes - la postmodernité, diraient certains -, et d'une esthétique expressionniste, qui ne craint pas l'expérimentation sauvage et qui mêle allègrement les formes héritées du passé et les procédés d'avant-garde, le réel et l'imaginaire. Cet ouvrage permet de découvrir ces écritures « nouvelles, mais possédant déjà une histoire, avec des étapes reconnaissables, des courants successifs ; voire, une préhistoire, si l'on tient compte des importantes traditions orales » qui les ont engendrées.

    Serrano calls for a reassessment of the practice of World Literature with six case studies taken from the Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean and Latin American traditions. Although in recent years the field has adopted more inclusive and wide-ranging criteria for college-level anthologies of World Literature, and has seen the collection and publication of critical readers, book-length introductions, and even a history, the theoretical predisposition of most of its practitioners paradoxically has led to a shrinking of its horizons and a narrowing of its vision. Reexamining World Literature asks scholars to look beyond the current dominant definition of World Literature (works in English with broad reach or works in other languages with significant circulation in English translation) in order to engage with a range of complex texts that elude the field's assumptions. World Literature need not be a we-are-the-world of shared values, but instead should ask readers to question what those values are
