The concept at issue in this book is Weltliteratur, or World Literature. Theoretical

frameworks usually view the now-famous epistolary exchange between Johann

Wolfgang von Goethe and the young Johann Peter Eckermann as the true foundation

of the concept, (though earlier promoters of similar ideas, such as August

Wilhelm Schlegel can be cited)1. Goethe wrote this to Eckermann in a well-known

letter in 1827: “National literature is now a rather unmeaning term; the epoch of

World Literature is at hand, and everyone must strive to hasten its approach”2.

Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels as well as Richard Moulton and Erich Auerbach,

among many others, also all contributed to the category from their respective

historical moments and theoretical perspectives. Marx and Engels, of course,

took a materialist point of view that emphasized the expansion of the capitalist

economic project and its progressive conquest of the world as a market. Richard

Moulton and Erich Auerbach, on the other hand, came from a humanistic philological

perspective that, as Jérôme David has put it in his reflections on the different

genealogies of World Literature, “derived from the anxious preoccupation

with what the literary works mean” (2013: 14) and focused very early on the problems

of translation and canonization that would become crucial for the conceptual

    debates of our time

The study examines cultural effects of various colonial systems of government in the Spanish- and French-speaking Caribbean in a little investigated period of transition: from the French Revolution to the abolition of slavery in Cuba (1789–1886). The comparison of cultural transfer processes by means of literary production from and about the Caribbean, embedded in a broader context of the circulation of culture and knowledge deciphers the different transculturations of European discourses in the colonies as well as the repercussions of these transculturations on the motherland’s ideas of the colonial other: The loss of a culturally binding centre in the case of the Spanish colonies – in contrast to France’s strong presence and binding force – is accompanied by a multirelationality which increasingly shapes hispanophone Caribbean literature and promotes the pursuit for political independence. The book provides necessary revision to the idea that the 19th-century Caribbean can only be understood as an outpost of the European metropolises. Examining the kaleidoscope of the colonial Caribbean opens new insights into the early processes of cultural globalisation and questions our established concept of a genuine western modernity. Updated and expanded translation of Die koloniale Karibik. Transferprozesse in hispanophonen und frankophonen Literaturen, De Gruyter mimesis 53), 2012

In view of the current crisis of globalization, this book aims to interrogate one of its key concepts in the past decades: World Literature. In a historical moment where the established focus on transnational identities, linguistic intersections, and other cosmopolitan cultural configurations is being challenged, the contributions of this volume explore possible adjustments, critiques, reconceptualizations, or refutations of World Literature.

The debate over world literature, and the underlying questions of global interconnections in a polycentric world, has recently become very visible. Until now, however, the theoretical discussion has lacked material-based approaches to analyze the construction processes of world literature in a transparent fashion. Using Latin American literatures as an example, this volume demonstrates in a tangible way how literature circulates on a global scale.

The debate surrounding world literature has been brought into renewed focus in light of questions pertaining to global networks in a polycentric world. Beyond theoretical debates, however, there has been a marked lack of materialistic approaches that seek to shed light on processes underlying the formation of world literature. Using Latin American literature as an example, this volume shows how the global circulation of literature takes place.

From the perspective of Latin American Studies, this volume offers a critical contribution to the current debate on world literature. It is structured around three conceptual blocks: gatekeepers, as the dispositives and actors mediating the international circulation of literature translation, as an unavoidable but always problematic mechanism and local literatures, as modes of writing that remain intrinsically tied to their contexts.

Description based upon print version of record

Main description: Naturalism is one of the last white patches on the historical map of Spanish literature. Up to now it was mainly the reference to the idealistically oriented history of ideas in Spain, and notably krausismo, that discouraged an 'ordinance survey' in any greater depth. But in Spain as elsewhere, as this study is the first to show, the naturalist literary debates, naturalist poetics and literary works were marked by a system of reference that was receptive to positivist and scientific influences: krausopositivismo. This phenomenon here supplies the dispositif for a structured analysis of naturalist literature in Spain, which as an epoch displays a very different profile from its counterpart in France
