Otl Aicher (1922-1991) was an outstanding personality in modern design, he was a co-founder of the legendary Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG), the Ulm School of Design, Germany. His works since the fifties of the last century in the field of corporate design and his pictograms for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich are major achievements in the visual communication of our times. An integral component of Aicher's work is that it is anchored in a "philosophy of making" inspired by such thinkers as Ockham, Kant or Wittgenstein, a philosophy concerned with the prerequisites and aims, the objects

This is a fully edited translation of a series of essays by the great Swedish dramatist August Strindberg. The essays, edited and translated by Michael Robinson, have been selected for the light they shed, both directly and indirectly, on Strindberg's contribution to the European theatre, firstly in such masterpieces of psychological realism as The Father and Miss Julie, and subsequently in those works, including A Dream Play and The Ghost Sonata, with which he largely established a basis for theatrical modernism. Together with the accompanying notes and commentary, these essays on psychology, history, painting, natural history and alchemy as well as the theatre, help to clarify the multifaceted nature of Strindberg's project. Idiosyncratic and lively, they offer crucial insights into the intellectual history of the late nineteenth century, while their personal nature draws the reader into an intimate relationship with the writer and his wide range of interests The Battle of the Brains -- Nemesis Divina -- Mysticism -- For Now -- Soul Murder (Apropos Rosmersholm) -- On Modern Drama and Modern Theatre (1889) -- I -- The Making of an Aspasia -- Nemesis Divina (Cont.) -- The New Arts! or The Role of Chance in Artistic Creation -- Whence We Have Come -- Character a Role? -- Cesarine (1894) -- Deranged Sensations (1894) -- In the Cemetery (1896) -- The Death's Head Moth -- Indigo and the Line of Copper -- To the Heckler -- On the Action of Light in Photography (1896) -- A Glance into Space (1896) -- Edvard Munch's Exhibition (1896) -- The Synthesis of Gold (1896) -- Contemporary Gold-Making (1896) -- The Sunflower (1896) -- The Mysticism of World History (1903) -- August Strindberg on Himself (1909)

August Strindberg is one of the most enduring of nineteenth-century dramatists, and is also an internationally recognised novelist, autobiographer, and painter. This Companion presents contributions by leading international scholars on different aspects of Strindberg's highly colourful life and work. The essays focus primarily on his most celebrated plays; these include the Naturalist Dramas, The Father and Miss Julie; the experimental dramas with which he created a true modernist theatre – To Damascus and A Dream Play; and the Chamber Plays of 1908 which, like so much of his work, exerted a powerful influence on much later twentieth-century drama. His plays are contextualised for what they contribute both to the history of drama and developments in theatre practice, and other essays clarify the enormous importance to these dramas of his other work, most notably the autobiographical novel Inferno, and his lifelong interest in science, the occult, sexual politics, and the visual arts. August Strindberg : the art and science of self-dramatization / Linda Haverty Rugg -- Strindberg and the woman question / Margaretha Fahlgren -- Learning to speak : Strindberg and the novel / Ulf Olsson -- Between realism and modernism : the modernity of Strindberg's autobiographical writings / Per Stounbjerg -- Miss Julie, naturalism, 'The battle of the brains,' and sexual desire / Ross Shideler -- Strindberg and comedy / Hans-Goran Ekman -- Crisis and change : Strindberg the unconscious modernist / Göran Stockenström -- A modernist dramaturgy / Eszter Szalczer -- The chamber plays / Lynn R. Wilkinson -- The history plays / Matthew H. Wikander -- Strindberg in the theatre / Frederick J.

Idiosyncratic and lively, they offer crucial insights into the intellectual history of the late nineteenth century, while their personal nature draws the reader into an intimate relationship with the writer and his wide range of interests
