    Cet ouvrage analyse le caractère du larron-enchanteur Maugis/Malagigi, dont la parabole évolutive va du Moyen Âge à la Renaissance, de la France à l'Italie, et couvre une textualité qui va de la chanson de geste au roman chevaleresque. À partir des poèmes épiques, se dessine la complexité d'un personnage qui est à la fois magicien, illusionniste, médecin et hypnotiseur, et qui s'oppose au pouvoir de Charlemagne en affirmant aussi son aptitude à voler les principaux objets impériaux. Dans la transformation de Maugis en Malagigi, il y a une forte tendance à la rationalisation qui conduira à une sorte de dissémination et de dissociation des fonctions narratives déjà appartenues à Maugis, jusqu'à leur disparition dans Orlando furioso. En utilisant la méthode philologique dans l'analyse des textes et en approfondissant divers aspects socioculturels des contextes de référence, on montrera comment ce personnage est représentatif d'une littérature européenne fortement imprégnée de composantes souvent contradictoires entre elles et dont les matrices doivent être recherchées dans des domaines géographiques et spirituels qui ne sont pas occidentaux et encore moins européen.

    Cet ouvrage analyse le caractère du larron-enchanteur Maugis/Malagigi, dont la parabole évolutive va du Moyen Âge à la Renaissance, de la France à l'Italie, et couvre une textualité qui va de la chanson de geste au roman chevaleresque. À partir des poèmes épiques, se dessine la complexité d'un personnage qui est à la fois magicien, illusionniste, médecin et hypnotiseur, et qui s'oppose au pouvoir de Charlemagne en affirmant aussi son aptitude à voler les principaux objets impériaux. Dans la transformation de Maugis en Malagigi, il y a une forte tendance à la rationalisation qui conduira à une sorte de dissémination et de dissociation des fonctions narratives déjà appartenues à Maugis, jusqu'à leur disparition dans Orlando furioso. En utilisant la méthode philologique dans l'analyse des textes et en approfondissant divers aspects socioculturels des contextes de référence, on montrera comment ce personnage est représentatif d'une littérature européenne fortement imprégnée de composantes souvent contradictoires entre elles et dont les matrices doivent être recherchées dans des domaines géographiques et spirituels qui ne sont pas occidentaux et encore moins européen.
