    Die in ihrem Umfang knappe, in ihrer gedanklichen Dichte anspruchsvolle Schrift Über Natur und Kunst ist in gleicher Weise für Philosophiehistoriker des Altertums wie auch für Byzantinisten und Historiker der spätmittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Philosophie von höchstem Interesse. In seinem Werk "Über Natur und Kunst" beschäftigt sich Bessarion mit der Frage, ob Natur und Kunst ihre Produkte mit Überlegung hervorbringen oder nicht. Seine Schrift steht im Kontext der Aristoteles-Kritik, die Georgios Gemistos (Plethon) während des Konzils von Ferrara / Florenz (1438/9) in Über die Unterschiede zwischen Platon und Aristoteles formulierte. Dort betont er, dass kein zweckbestimmtes Erzeugen ohne Überlegen möglich sei. Den Kern von Bessarions Traktat bildet eine Stellungnahme gegen Georg von Trapezunt, der die hitzige Diskussion um Aristoteles und Platon dazu genutzt hatte, in einem Pamphlet Bessarion als Intellektuellen und möglichen Kandidaten für den Papstthron zu diskreditieren. In seiner Antwort auf die Frage, ob Natur und Kunst überlegten, versucht Bessarion, Platon und Aristoteles unter Anerkennung der vorrangigen Stellung Platons zu harmonisieren. Gleichzeitig zeigt er, dass die Lehre Platons und der Platoniker mit der christlichen Theologie des Ostens und Westens völlig übereinstimme. Eben dieser Versuch macht Bessarion zu einer zentralen Figur im Prozess der Übertragung der platonischen Philosophie aus dem byzantinischen Osten in die Welt der Renaissance und Über Natur und Kunst zu einem der wichtigsten Rezeptionszeugnisse der byzantinischen Philosophie dieser Zeit. Die Ausgabe enthält eine Neuedition des griechischen Textes, die editio princeps der bis jetzt unveröffentlichten, von Bessarion selbst erstellten lateinischen Übersetzung sowie eine neue Edition der von Niccolò Perotti überarbeiteten lateinischen Fassung dieses Textes.

    The general scope of the present volume is to present a variety of approaches and topics within the growing field of research on Byzantine aesthetics. Theurgy in Neoplatonic and Christian contexts is represented by the contributions of W.-M. Stock and L. Bergemann; theories of beauty are at the centre of interest of the papers by S. Mariev and M. Marchetto. A. Pizzone approaches Byzantine aesthetics by looking for aesthetic experience in the literary texts, while the remaining contributions explore issues related to the iconoclast controversy: An important moment in the development of Byzantine philosophy on the eve of iconoclasm is the primary interest of A. del Campo Echevarría, who looks at the question of universals in John of Damaskos. The relationship between image and text in Byzantine illustrated manuscripts occupies the attention of B. Crostini. D. Afinogenov explores from a philological perspective the fate of important iconophile terminology in Old Bulgarian, while L. Lukhovitskij reconstructs from historical and philological perspectives the historical memory of the iconoclast controversy during the Late Byzantine Period

    Die in ihrem Umfang knappe, in ihrer gedanklichen Dichte anspruchsvolle Schrift Über Natur und Kunst ist in gleicher Weise für Philosophiehistoriker des Altertums wie auch für Byzantinisten und Historiker der spätmittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Philosophie von höchstem Interesse. In seinem Werk "Über Natur und Kunst" beschäftigt sich Bessarion mit der Frage, ob Natur und Kunst ihre Produkte mit Überlegung hervorbringen oder nicht. Seine Schrift steht im Kontext der Aristoteles-Kritik, die Georgios Gemistos (Plethon) während des Konzils von Ferrara / Florenz (1438/9) in Über die Unterschiede zwischen Platon und Aristoteles formulierte. Dort betont er, dass kein zweckbestimmtes Erzeugen ohne Überlegen möglich sei. Den Kern von Bessarions Traktat bildet eine Stellungnahme gegen Georg von Trapezunt, der die hitzige Diskussion um Aristoteles und Platon dazu genutzt hatte, in einem Pamphlet Bessarion als Intellektuellen und möglichen Kandidaten für den Papstthron zu diskreditieren. In seiner Antwort auf die Frage, ob Natur und Kunst überlegten, versucht Bessarion, Platon und Aristoteles unter Anerkennung der vorrangigen Stellung Platons zu harmonisieren. Gleichzeitig zeigt er, dass die Lehre Platons und der Platoniker mit der christlichen Theologie des Ostens und Westens völlig übereinstimme. Eben dieser Versuch macht Bessarion zu einer zentralen Figur im Prozess der Übertragung der platonischen Philosophie aus dem byzantinischen Osten in die Welt der Renaissance und Über Natur und Kunst zu einem der wichtigsten Rezeptionszeugnisse der byzantinischen Philosophie dieser Zeit. Die Ausgabe enthält eine Neuedition des griechischen Textes, die editio princeps der bis jetzt unveröffentlichten, von Bessarion selbst erstellten lateinischen Übersetzung sowie eine neue Edition der von Niccolò Perotti überarbeiteten lateinischen Fassung dieses Textes

    The general scope of the present volume is to present a variety of approaches and topics within the growing field of research on Byzantine aesthetics. Theurgy in Neoplatonic and Christian contexts is represented by the contributions of W.-M. Stock and L. Bergemann; theories of beauty are at the centre of interest of the papers by S. Mariev and M. Marchetto. A. Pizzone approaches Byzantine aesthetics by looking for aesthetic experience in the literary texts, while the remaining contributions explore issues related to the iconoclast controversy: An important moment in the development of Byzantine philosophy on the eve of iconoclasm is the primary interest of A. del Campo Echevarría, who looks at the question of universals in John of Damaskos. The relationship between image and text in Byzantine illustrated manuscripts occupies the attention of B. Crostini. D. Afinogenov explores from a philological perspective the fate of important iconophile terminology in Old Bulgarian, while L. Lukhovitskij reconstructs from historical and philological perspectives the historical memory of the iconoclast controversy during the Late Byzantine Period
