    In ihrer kurzen Geschichte der chinesischen Literatur gibt Sabina Knight einen kompakten Überblick darüber, wie sich die jahrtausendealte Literatur Chinas vom Altertum bis in die Gegenwart entwickelt hat. Sie beschreibt, welch zentrale Rolle die literarische Kultur in Gesellschaft und Politik spielte und wie eng das Band war, das ästhetische und ethische Lehren verknüpfte. Die Darstellung der erzählenden und der lyrischen Gattungen steht im Vordergrund, darüber hinaus werden Philosophie und Geschichte Chinas, Oper und Theater angesprochen. Der eigentliche, scharf umrissene Literaturbegriff entwickelte sich in China erst im späten 19. Jahrhundert.
