The theoretical and methodological approaches range from literary studies, developmental psychology, maps and geography literacy, ecocriticism, historical contextualization with both new historicist and political-historical leanings, and intermediality to materialist cartographies, cultural studies, island studies, and genre studies. By this, this volume aims at embedding children’s literature in a broader field of literary and cultural studies, thus situating children’s literature research within a general context of literary theory.

    Kurt Schwitters (1887−1948) gehört zu den Protagonisten der Avantgarden nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Obwohl sein bildkünstlerisches Werk mittlerweile kanonisiert ist und seine literarischen Texte seit über dreißig Jahren in einer Leseausgabe ediert vorliegen, stagniert die literaturwissenschaftliche Forschung zu Schwitters seit Längerem. Die Beiträge des Bandes nehmen die notwendige Diskussion um den Status und die Wirkung der Avantgarden und der Moderne zu Schwitters‘ Zeit auf. Sie verbinden diese Diskussion mit den bisher weitgehend unbekannten Materialien, die durch die im Jahr 2010 gestartete Neuedition von Schwitters‘ Texten der wissenschaftlichen Öffentlichkeit erstmalig zugänglich gemacht werden. Hinzu kommt die Intensivierung der Schwitters- und Avantgarde-Forschung unter literaturwissenschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten, die aktuelle kultur-, kunst- und medienwissenschaftliche Perspektiven berücksichtigt.Die Beiträge gehen auf eine Tagung im Sprengel Museum Hannover 2011 zurück.

    This chapter addresses what an avant-garde for children might look like, and what it might do. It is called "Surrealism for Children: Paradoxes and Possibilities" because the very notion of an avant-garde for children strikes the author as both paradoxical and not, and as both possible and impossible. In making this claim, the author argues with - and revises - his own analysis in The Avant-Garde and American Postmodernity: Small Incisive Shocks (2002), which took for granted that an avant-garde for children was both possible and critically viable. What he once accepted as a certainty, he now thinks of as an intriguing question. The answer resides among the three main (and overlapping) areas around which the paradoxes and possibilities of a Surrealist children's literature circulate: knowledge, experience, and audience.
