    Although George Bernard Shaw quipped that "the Germans lack talent for two things: revolution and crime novels," there is a long tradition of German crime fiction; it simply hasn't aligned itself with international trends. Duringthe 1920s, German-language writers dispensed with the detective and focused instead on criminals, a trend that did not take hold in other countries until after 1945, by which time Germany had gone on to produce antidetective novels that were similarly ahead of their time. German crime fiction has thus always been a curious case; rather than follow the established rules of the genre, it has always been interested in examining, breaking, and ultimately rewriting those rules. This book assembles leading international scholars to examine today's German crime fiction. It features innovative scholarly work that matches the innovativeness of the genre, taking up the Regionalkrimi;crime fiction's reimagining and transforming of traditional identities; historical crime fiction that examines Germany's and Austria's conflicted twentieth-century past; and how the newly vibrant Austrian crime fiction ties in with and differentiates itself from its German counterpart.     After 1945, Jewish writing in German was almost unimaginable-and then only in reference to the Shoah. Only in the 1980s, after a period of mourning, silence, and processing of the trauma, did a new Jewish literature evolve in Germany and Austria. This volume focuses on the re-emergence of a lively Jewish cultural scene in the German-speaking countries and the various cultural forms of expression that have developed around it. Topics include current debates such as the emergence of a post-Waldheim Jewish discourse in Austria and Jewish responses to German unification and the Gulf wars. Other significant themes addressed are the memorialization of the Holocaust in Berlin and Vienna, the uses of Kafka in contemporary German literature, and the German and American-Jewish dialogue as representative of both the history of exile and the globalization of postmodern civilization. The volume is enhanced by contributions from some of the most significant representatives of German-Jewish writing today such as Esther Dischereit, Barbara Honigmann, Jeanette Lander, and Doron Rabinovici. The result is a lively dialogue between European and North American scholars and writers that captures the complexity and dynamism of Jewish culture in Germany and Austria at the turn of the twenty-first century

    Am Beispiel der Romane Uwe Johnsons und Wolfgang Koeppens profiliert die Studie den Begriff der politischen Literatur: Es wird gezeigt, dass nicht allein die Inhalte, sondern vor allem die Form, die Art und Weise des Erzählens, konstitutiv für die politische Qualität von Literatur ist. Mareike Gronich geht der Frage nach, inwieweit die narrative Struktur und die Sprache eines Prosatextes jenseits der auf der Inhaltsebene verhandelten Themen eine politische Dimension entfalten können. In der Studie wird ein an Hannah Arendts Denken angelehnter literatur- und politiktheoretischer Ansatz entwickelt, mit dem sich die politische Dimension der Form in ihrer ästhetischen Verfasstheit sowie auch in ihrem politischen Wirkungspotenzial beschreiben lässt. Die Romaninterpretationen zeigen, dass Erzählen auch dann politisch sein kann, wenn es sich nicht explizit - kritisch oder affirmativ - zu politischen Inhalten positioniert, sondern sich stattdessen auf 'das Politische' richtet und dies erzählend mitgestaltet

    Von der Entgrenzung der Arbeit ist inzwischen allenthalben die Rede. Dass sich diese nicht auf die bislang untersuchten ökonomischen Aspekte begrenzen lässt, sondern sich auch in literarische Texte einschreibt, ist die Ausgangsthese dieser Untersuchung, die ein kultur- und literaturwissenschaftliches Beschreibungs- und Analysemodell entfaltet, mittels dessen das Phänomen in seiner Komplexität überhaupt erst fassbar wird. Dabei wird von einer Entgrenzung der Arbeit im dreifachen Sinne ausgegangen: Neben der ökonomischen Entgrenzung rücken hier auch jene Transgressionen in den Fokus, die sich auf sprachlicher und epistemischer Ebene vollziehen. Die Studie macht die Implikationen dieser Verschiebungen in Lektüren verschiedener Gattungen kenntlich.     Wie kaum eine andere Dramatikerin schafft es Elfriede Jelinek, mit ihren Texten seit Jahrzehnten für Aufruhr auf der Bühne und in den medialen und wissenschaftlichen Anschlussdiskursen zu sorgen. Dabei wird ihrem Werk, das 2004 mit dem Literaturnobelpreis ausgezeichnet wurde, fast hymnisch das Prädikat "Gesellschaftskritik" zugeschrieben.     Although George Bernard Shaw quipped that "the Germans lack talent for two things: revolution and crime novels," there is a long tradition of German crime fiction; it simply hasn't aligned itself with international trends. Duringthe 1920s, German-language writers dispensed with the detective and focused instead on criminals, a trend that did not take hold in other countries until after 1945, by which time Germany had gone on to produce antidetective novels that were similarly ahead of their time. German crime fiction has thus always been a curious case; rather than follow the established rules of the genre, it has always been interested in examining, breaking, and ultimately rewriting those rules. This book assembles leading international scholars to examine today's German crime fiction. It features innovative scholarly work that matches the innovativeness of the genre, taking up the Regionalkrimi;crime fiction's reimagining and transforming of traditional identities; historical crime fiction that examines Germany's and Austria's conflicted twentieth-century past; and how the newly vibrant Austrian crime fiction ties in with and differentiates itself from its German counterpart.     After 1945, Jewish writing in German was almost unimaginable̶and then only in reference to the Shoah. Only in the 1980s, after a period of mourning, silence, and processing of the trauma, did a new Jewish literature evolve in Germany and Austria. This volume focuses on the re-emergence of a lively Jewish cultural scene in the German-speaking countries and the various cultural forms of expression that have developed around it. Topics include current debates such as the emergence of a post-Waldheim Jewish discourse in Austria and Jewish responses to German unification and the Gulf wars. Other significant themes addressed are the memorialization of the Holocaust in Berlin and Vienna, the uses of Kafka in contemporary German literature, and the German and American-Jewish dialogue as representative of both the history of exile and the globalization of postmodern civilization. The volume is enhanced by contributions from some of the most significant representatives of German-Jewish writing today such as Esther Dischereit, Barbara Honigmann, Jeanette Lander, and Doron Rabinovici.     Am Beispiel der Romane Uwe Johnsons und Wolfgang Koeppens profiliert die Studie den Begriff der politischen Literatur: Es wird gezeigt, dass nicht allein die Inhalte, sondern vor allem die Form, die Art und Weise des Erzählens, konstitutiv für die politische Qualität von Literatur ist. Mareike Gronich geht der Frage nach, inwieweit die narrative Struktur und die Sprache eines Prosatextes jenseits der auf der Inhaltsebene verhandelten Themen eine politische Dimension entfalten können. In der Studie wird ein an Hannah Arendts Denken angelehnter literatur- und politiktheoretischer Ansatz entwickelt, mit dem sich die politische Dimension der Form in ihrer ästhetischen Verfasstheit sowie auch in ihrem politischen Wirkungspotenzial beschreiben lässt. Die Romaninterpretationen zeigen, dass Erzählen auch dann politisch sein kann, wenn es sich nicht explizit - kritisch oder affirmativ - zu politischen Inhalten positioniert, sondern sich stattdessen auf 'das Politische' richtet und dies erzählend mitgestaltet

    Von der Entgrenzung der Arbeit ist inzwischen allenthalben die Rede. Dass sich diese nicht auf die bislang untersuchten ökonomischen Aspekte begrenzen lässt, sondern sich auch in literarische Texte einschreibt, ist die Ausgangsthese dieser Untersuchung, die ein kultur- und literaturwissenschaftliches Beschreibungs- und Analysemodell entfaltet, mittels dessen das Phänomen in seiner Komplexität überhaupt erst fassbar wird. Dabei wird von einer Entgrenzung der Arbeit im dreifachen Sinne ausgegangen: Neben der ökonomischen Entgrenzung rücken hier auch jene Transgressionen in den Fokus, die sich auf sprachlicher und epistemischer Ebene vollziehen. Die Studie macht die Implikationen dieser Verschiebungen in Lektüren verschiedener Gattungen kenntlich. Analysiert werden Romane und Erzählungen, aber auch Reportagen, Essays und Interviews, in denen sich Vorstandsvorsitzende, Top-Manager oder Professoren über ihr Arbeitsverständnis und das Verhältnis von Arbeit und Nicht-Arbeit äußern

    Wie kaum eine andere Dramatikerin schafft es Elfriede Jelinek, mit ihren Texten seit Jahrzehnten für Aufruhr auf der Bühne und in den medialen und wissenschaftlichen Anschlussdiskursen zu sorgen. Dabei wird ihrem Werk, das 2004 mit dem Literaturnobelpreis ausgezeichnet wurde, fast hymnisch das Prädikat "Gesellschaftskritik" zugeschrieben. In dieser literaturwissenschaftlichen Studie wird der "Diskurs Jelinek" in seiner Spezifik beschrieben und damit analysierbar und prinzipiell sogar simulierbar gemacht. Durch strukturale und zugleich interdiskursive Textanalysen ausgewählter Dramen werden dabei jene homologen Textstrukturen, wie oszillierende Figurenmodelle, in den Dramen aufgezeigt, die das Spiel der (Sprach-)Macht vor dem Hintergrund aktueller politischer und wirtschaftlicher Mediendiskurse offenlegen
