This collection of thirteen specially commissioned essays by international scholars takes a fresh look at the profound impact of the Peninsular War on Romantic British literature and culture. The expertly authored chapters explore the valorization of Spain by nineteenth-century poets such as Lord Byron, William Wordsworth, Robert Southey, S.T. Coleridge, the Shelleys, and Felicia Hemans in contrast to the Enlightenment-era view of Spain as a backwards nation in decline. Topics discussed include the vision of Spain in Gothic fiction, Spanish experiences of exile as exemplified by the conflict between Valentin de Llanos and Joseph Blanco White, and British women writers' approach to peninsular fiction.  Spain in British Romanticism: 1800-1840 is essential reading for scholars and enthusiasts of Romantic literature and Spanish history.  1 Introduction: Spain and British Romanticism -- 2 The Matter of Spain in Romantic Britain -- 3 Robert Southey and the Peninsular campaign -- 4 Southey, Spain, and Romantic Apostasy -- 5 Wordsworth’s Spain, 1808-1811.-6 Coleridge and Spanish Literature -- 7 Spain and Byron’s The Age of Bronze -- 8 Spain and Cosmopolitan Liberalism -- 9 The Shelleys and Spain -- 10 Spain in Gothic Fiction -- 11 British Women Writers of Peninsular Fiction -- 12 The Spanish “Revolution” in Print and Image -- 13 Alexander Dallas’s Reimagining Spain -- 14 Valentín de Llanos and Spanish Writing in Exile.

The only volume to comprehensively bring together developments from different disciplines that address the complex interplay between British Romantic literature and the visual artsIt covers a wide range of intermedial cultural productions, from popular to elite, and from the public to the domestic sphere, including literary texts, paintings and prints, literary galleries, exhibition catalogues, illustrated magazines, household objects and designAll the essays in this volume are newly commissioned and include cutting edge research from an interdisciplinary group of writers, literary scholars, art historians, and exhibition curatorsIt brings together work of emerging as well as established scholars in the field, from Europe, North America and Australia, reflecting the global significance of this growing fieldFrom the birth of the museum to the explosion of mass-produced illustrated books, the Romantic period (c. 1770-1840) was a moment of rapid change and fruitful experimentation in the fields of art and literature alike. New advances in print production encouraged a wider range of readers to engage with literary forms that opened a path into the once aristocratic field of the visual arts. This Companion captures the way recent engagements with visual studies have reshaped how we approach and understand the boundaries between print and visual culture in the period. It brings together 27 research-led chapters that offer a detailed account of the productive, if sometimes tense, interactions between emergent forms of intermedial expression that were redefining culture in the Romantic period -- as they continue to do today.

Ian Haywood explores the 'Golden Age' of caricature through the close reading of key, iconic prints by artists including James Gillray, George and Robert Cruikshank, and Thomas Rowlandson. This approach both illuminates the visual and ideological complexity of graphic satire and demonstrates how this art form transformed Romantic-era politics into a unique and compelling spectacle of corruption, monstrosity and resistance. New light is cast on major Romantic controversies including the 'revolution debate' of the 1790s, the impact of Thomas Paine's 'infidel' Age of Reason, the introduction of paper money and the resulting explosion of executions for forgery, the propaganda campaign against Napoleon, the revolution in Spain, the Peterloo massacre, the Queen Caroline scandal, and the Reform Bill crisis. Overall, the volume offers important new insights into the relationship between art, satire and politics in a key period of history.
